Esperance Sportive defeated Etoile Sahel in a five-goal thriller on Saturday to virtually clinch the league title.

Esperance now need only three points from their last two matches to be assured of the title. On Saturday they beat Etoile inside a packed Rades Olympic Stadium 3-2 to go a point clear.

It was the crucial match that has ultimately decided the championship. Etoile can now only hope to win their only remaining fixture, and pray that Esperance also lose their last two matches.

Morocco

The league has reached a crescendo with only two points separating the two main contenders Hassania Agadir and Wydad Casablanca.

Wydad improved their chances after beating Kawkab Marrakech 2-0 in the big game of the weekend, but Hassania lost their early goal to draw 1-1 at Olympic Khourigba.

There are still six matches to play and the race is now wide open between one of Morocco's biggest clubs and one of its rising forces.

Ghana

Asante Kotoko suffered a shock 3-1 defeat at the hands of Obuasi Goldfields on Sunday.

The defeat is a wake-up call for the former African champions ahead of Sunday's African Cup Winners Cup second round second-leg tie in Kumasi against Santos of South Africa.

German coach Ernst Middendorp has told his players that the match will be the big test of Kotoko's potentials this year.

Kotoko drew 3-3 with Santos in Cape Town. Meanwhile a 10-man Hearts of Oak are still leading after beating city rivals Olympics 2-0 in Accra.

Ethiopia

St. George have been crowned champions for the 15th time since 1950. The red-and-golds defeated Trans Ethiopia 2-0 to lead with 52 points with three matches to play.

Their closes challenges Electricity can no longer catch up even if St. George lose their remaining matches.

Egypt

There has been yet another blow to Zamalek's title hopes.

The league holders lost 2-1 to Arab Contractors to slip to third spot. Meanwhile Ismaily hold on fast to their lead after a a 1-0 win over Souhag and Al Ahly moved on to second spot on a similar score line against Al Masry. Five points separate Ismaily and Ahly.
