Gambia gets Fifa cash
Sepp Blatter is fighting for re-election as Fifa President
Sepp Blatter is the initiator of Fifa's 'goal' project
By BBC Sport Online's Lamin Cham in Banjul

Gambia will receive a $400,000 grant from Fifa, courtesy of the world football governing body's 'Goal' project.

It provides needed cash for selected national associations in developing countries to develop their football infrastructure.

The money from Fifa is to be used for the construction of a national technical centre for the country.

It would have a standard pitch, residences, a secretariat and a gymnasium.

The project site is to be located in Yundum, 20 kilometres from the capital, Banjul.

Speaking to BBC Sport Online after an inspection tour, Sampong Kablan, Fifa's Goal project officer in West Africa, said funds could be released as soon as June.

Inadequate facilities

Gambia has already secured land for the construction of the centre.

"What is now left is for them (the Gambian FA) to complete the necessary documentation for the project to take off," Kablan said.

There are no adequate facilities in Banjul, as the FA has just one venue, the national stadium, for all league and international matches.

Gabbie Sosseh, the FA president, says the proposed centre would be a camp for national and visiting teams.

"It would be a total change for the better," Sosseh said.

Initiated by Fifa President, Sepp Blatter, who is seeking re-election at the Fifa congress in May, the goal project has 12 offices throughout the world.

Four of these offices are located in Africa - Egypt, Botswana, Ivory Coast and Cameroon.

In a bid to drum up support for his re-election, the Fifa President will be visiting Cote D'Ivoire next weekend.

Issa Hayatou, President of the Confederation of African football, is Blatter's opponent in the forhcoming election.
