Steve Evans' side played with real dash and spirit and only the woodwork denied them at the end. If some of Sir Alex Ferguson's undercard hoped to use this as a chance to impress they failed miserably."

Michael Da Silva reports: "Birmingham march into the last eight of the FA Cup with plenty to spare. Sheffield Wednesday perhaps deserved a goal for pure effort in the second half but the gulf in class was significant, and the cup double dream is still on for the Blues."

1908: And now Kyle McFadzean gets on the end of David Hunt's cross - his header flying wide. Man Utd have been hanging on against non-league Crawley for well over half an hour here. Unbelievable.

1906: So close!! Crawley substitute Richard Brodie gets on the end of a corner, flicked on at the near post by a Man Utd defender, and loops a header goalwards - only to watch on in agony as it crashes back off Anders Lindegaard's crossbar. What a story that would've been.

1903: A sign of Man Utd's growing frustration as Wayne Rooney goes in clumsily - and unnecessarily - on David Hunt, the England frontman quite rightly booked as a result. Petulance from Rooney.

1859: Crawley are still putting the hard yakka in at Old Trafford - fair play to them. United as an attacking force are almost non-existent now. Wowzers.

1857: Into the 83rd minute, and it's another Crawley free-kick 30 yards out... Matthew Tubbs stings it over the bar.

1855: Last throw of the dice from Crawley manager Steve Evans - Simon Rusk on for Ben Smith.

1853: Crawley free-kick 25 yards out, perfect for the left-footer, Dean Howell over it... big build-up... wasted over the bar, with the left-back slipping as he took it too. Oops.

1846: Chance of the night for Crawley, chance of the night... Richard Brodie breaks down the left and his cross is met in the middle by David Hunt unmarked - but the midfielder, with his wrong foot, can only volley wide unmarked. What a moment that could've been.

1843: A change apiece as we enter the final 20 minutes - Darren Fletcher coming on for Fabio da Silva for United, Jamie Cook replacing Willie Gibson for Crawley. Cook, apparently, took time out from being a footballer in an attempt to establish himself as a professional golfer only recently. The FA Cup doesn't half throw up some lovely tales.

1840: Man Utd build patiently but when the ball is fed to Darron Gibson on the edge of the box, his touch lets him down - and the Man Utd crowd show the first few signs of frustration as a result. They assumed this game would've been wrapped up by now.

1837: Crawley Town change - Craig McAllister off and reported big-money signing Richard Brodie on in his place.

1835: Wayne Rooney has a go at goal for - I think - the first time in the match, but his right-foot effort is well over.

1833: Approaching an hour gone at Old Trafford and still there's just the one goal in it. Who would've bet on that before kick-off? Crawley are surely going to run out of huff soon, though...?

1829: Second Man Utd substitution - Chris Smalling on for Rafael da Silva.

1828: Ah shame... Sergio Torres breaks from midfield but is just unable to set Matthew Tubbs free, and then the Crawley midfielder catches Rafael da Silva late and goes into the referee's book.

1825: Fine spell of possession from Crawley, with Ben Smith, Dannie Bulman and Craig McAllister all involved - and United are having to do some defending at the start of this half.

1822: The hosts break up the other end, though, Wayne Rooney setting Gabriel Obertan clear on the left - Pablo Mills back to clear the United winger's cross well under pressure from Javier Hernandez.

1821: Crawley right back into their stride at the start of the half, and another fine Dean Howell ball in from the left forces another rushed clearance from the United defence.

1819: Manchester United kick off the second half, Man Utd 1-0 Crawley.

1815: Guess who's out warming up? Only Wayne Rooney. The England frontman is coming on for Anderson, apparently - a dear diary moment for every single Crawley Town player in the second half, then.

1802: The half-time whistle goes at Old Trafford.

1758: Dean Howell has sent a couple of decent crosses in from the left for Crawley tonight - but his latest one eludes the onrushing Matthew Tubbs when had it found him he would've had a clean shot on goal.

Chief football writer Phil McNulty at Old Trafford: "Wes Brown's goal will frustrate Crawley boss Steve Evans on every level. He had watched his side cope comfortably up until very slack defending saw the deadlock broken. Crawley fans appear undaunted though."

1754: Good save from Michel Kuipers as the Dutchman gets down to beat away Gabriel Obertan's shot. Crawley hanging on for half-time.

1752: For the first time in the match, United are starting to string the chances together - though Pablo Mills is unlucky to have a corner given against him when he holds off Javier Hernandez in the area, the last touch was definitely off the Mexican. The set-piece comes to nothing in the end anyway, though.

1750: Oh that's another stunning pass from Darron Gibson, the Irishman setting Fabio da Silva clear in the box with a perfectly weighted pass, the Brazilian prodding wide when he should have at least hit the target. Gibson's looking very much the part today.

1749: No sign of that goal deflating Crawley's enthusiasm just yet, and the visitors continue to buzz about the hosts nicely.

1746: That goal, by the way, is Wes Brown's first since October 2008 - and only his fifth ever. Which is nice.

Man Utd goal: The hosts lead - but you can hardly say it's been one-way traffic. Either way, it's an excellent goal, Darron Gibson working a short corner routine and then swinging in a delightful cross that Wes Brown flicks expertly into the far corner.

1744: GOALFLASH Man Utd 1-0 Crawley (Brown)

1743: A superb pass from Darron Gibson falls perfectly for Javier Hernandez inside the Crawley box - but the Mexican opts to take a touch instead of shoot first time and Crawley are able to clear.

1739: Crawley are really settling into this match now - and they're even fashioning the odd half-chance. The latest sees Craig McAllister flick a header goalwards from a ball in from deep, his effort easily held by United keeper Anders Lindegaard.

1735: Crawley frontman Matthew Tubbs - scorer of 25 goals in 26 games this season - is, understandably, looking a touch isolated up front on his own - but even he is putting a shift in to pressure, hassle and harry United at every turn. Excellent first 20 minutes to this match from the visitors.

1731: Just over 15 minutes gone and Crawley are holding their own. 0-0.

1729: Close. Bebe threads a lovely ball through for Javier Hernandez to run on to... only for the official to raise his flag on the right touchline. Lovely bending run from Hernandez, but better defending from Crawley - stepping up as a backline to catch their man offside.

1726: Have a go son, why not? Matthew Tubbs's knock-down sits up nicely 25 yards out from the Man Utd goal and Crawley midfielder Ben Smith tries his luck with looping long-ranger... that only narrowly drifts past Anders Lindegaard's far post. Decent effort.

1725: Fabio da Silva gets in behind the Crawley defence on the left and has plenty of support in the box from his Man Utd team-mates - his cut-back is weak, though, and David Hunt is able to clear. Man Utd already dominating possession almost entirely.

1722: Crawley Town will have to do a lot of this tonight I suspect - chase-ball. Man Utd already stroking the ball around comfortably, though the visitors are so far holding their shape well.

1719: Good pace to the game early on - and Crawley Town are not here just to sit there and look pretty. Plenty of effervescence about the visitors, as you'd expect.

1718: After Crawley burst at the first opportunity - a cross from the left is easily cut out - Man Utd earn a couple of corners in quick succession, Town defender David Hunt defending the first well and then Bebe seeing his cross on the back of the second fly across goal.

1716: We are up and running on the biggest day of many of these Crawley players lives.

1714: Here come the players, then - what an arena and atmosphere for Crawley's players to sample, this is. And with 9,000 away fans apparently in attendance, they needn't feel alone out there. Still, they couldn't... could they...?

1711: MAN UTD v CRAWLEY
Chief football writer Phil McNulty at Old Trafford: "Manchester United make nine changes from the side that beat Manchester City last weekend. Only John O'Shea and Anderson survive - and Wayne Rooney is on the bench should they need his inspiration. Bebe makes a rare start. Good news for Crawley in that their captain Pablo Mills, who was rested for Tuesday's draw against Wrexham, does return to the starting XI. But they are without his midfield colleague, Scott Neilson, because of a foot injury, while John Dempster and Josh Simpson are cup-tied."

1709: And while I'm sure you'll hear the phrase "Magic of the Cup" bandied about a fair bit this weekend, just as it is every season, I was interested to learn this week that Crawley Town are not exactly everyone's flavour of the month. Their presence in round five of the world's finest domestic Cup competition has, in fact, created something of an unofficial furore. Interesting as far as background goes... but not something I'll be holding against the XI players out on the fieldby any stretch. Feel free to chat among yourselves, though.

1705: Crawley physio Mark Stein has been speaking to BBC Sport ahead of this tie - you might want to check out what he said. "We've beaten three League sides [Swindon, Derby and Torquay] already and the club deserves a great tie. "To be honest it's unbelievable, it just gets better and better. Hopefully we can go there and do alright."

1640: Into the last 10 minutes in the Birmingham 3-0 Sheff Weds and Stoke 3-0 Brighton games... and the Premier League teams are as comfortable as the scorelines suggest.

Football League Macca: "Norwich did have their noses in front at Leeds but sub Davide Somma has made it 2-2 with his first kick of the game. Hameur Bouazza has also made it 2-2 for Millwall against Boro. Bournemouth have gone in front in the big L1 game. A big L1 goal for Bristol Rovers as they lead against Oldham. Macclesfield have gone from 1-0 down to 4-1 up at relegation rivals Stockport."

1631: With both three goals to the good, it's all very comfortable for Stoke and Birmingham against Brighton and Sheff Weds, respectively. Into the last 20 minutes, both Premier League sides are taking the opportunity to work on their keep-ball games.

Manchester United make nine changes for their FA Cup fifth-round match against Crawley, Anderson and John O'Shea the only survivors from the team that beat Man City 2-1 last week. Wayne Rooney starts on a youthful-looking bench.

1619: Penalty appeals from Brighton at the Britannia Stadium as Elliott Bennett has his run into the area checked by Robert Huth, but referee Howard Webb is having none of it. Still, some encouragement for Gus Poyet's men, there.

BBC Sport's Paul Fletcher at Selhurst Park: "Palace 0-0 Blades. Into the second half and no goals so far. Fair to say these teams are lacking in confidence and self-belief."

Birmingham goal: That is surely game, set and match for Sheffield Wednesday, Blues midfielder David Murphy on hand to lash home from inside the box after the visitors failed to deal with Keith Fahey's fine, whipped corner.

Everton's match-winner at Chelsea, captain Phil Neville, tells BBC Radio 5 live: "I knew I was going to score, I knew where the ball was going to go - and that's half the battle. We've been practising [penalties] all week. The manager just told us to hit them as hard as possible. My biggest worry is that there was a big divot in the penalty spot. Petr Cech looks really big, but luckily he dived the wrong way. Out of the two ties with Chelsea, I think we just deserved to go through. This could be the springboard for us. We've set the standard today and we must not drop below that. There is still plenty to play for in the league if we pull our socks up."

Football League Macca: "Swansea are looking good for a home win as Ashley Williams put them 2-0 up against Doncaster. At Leeds, Norwich levelled just before the HT whistle through Henri Lansbury. MK Dons are into the L1 play-off slots as they lead at Hartlepool, while Wycombe are trailing at home to lowly L2 side Accrington."

Saj Chowdhury's HT snap-shot: "Two errors of judgement by keeper Peter Brezovan made Brighton's task tough, though there was still hope of a 'cupset'. And then Shawcross added a third. Any comeback now would top those of West Ham and Newcastle."

1548: The half-time whistles blow at the Britannia Stadium and St Andrew's.

Stoke goal: It's been coming... Ryan Shawcross makes it three for the hosts with a header, nodding home Jon Walters' near-post flick-on from Jermaine Pennant's excellent corner. Brighton being taught a bit of a lesson, here.

1538: Clarification to that Chelsea shoot-out record at 1515 - I'm led to believe that does not include the 2009 Community Shield win over Man Utd on penalties. If you count that, it's seven shoot-out defeats in eight. We think.

BBC Sport's Paul Fletcher at Selhurst Park: "Two good chances for both Crystal Palace and Sheffield United but between them these two struggling teams have mustered just six goals in their last six games. Definitely very edgy at Selhurst Park."

1536: Cameron Jerome has fluffed his lines with an awful miss for Birmingham from three yards out. Jerome couldn't redirect Lee Bowyer's cut-back and the ball trickles wide of the post. That should have been three for the hosts.

1533: Almost 3-0 to Stoke against Brighton, the Premier League outfit impressing against their League One opponents. This time Ryan Shawcross misses with a header close in from Jermaine Pennant's whipped cross.

1529: Worrying scenes for Alexander Hleb at St Andrew's, the Birmingham midfielder stretchered off the field with an inflatable protection around his leg - that looks serious. It was a late tackle from James O'Connor that caused the injury. David Bentley is his replacement.

Football League Macca: "Some big goals going in. Scott Sinclair has his 19th of the season as Swansea are beating Doncaster. Luciano Becchio is not far behind, he has 14 and Leeds have their 58th league goal of the season as they lead Norwich. Neil Harris has got his first Championship goal of the season as Millwall lead Boro. Colchester are sniffing around L1 promotion and are beating Walsall, while L2 leaders Chesterfield are winning at Lincoln and Gillingham are ahead against promo rivals Bury."

Stoke goal: It's all going the Premier League side's way this afternoon, Marc Wilson playing a great one-two with Jermaine Pennant before crossing into the area for Jon Walters to nod in. Keeper Peter Brezovan, again, should have done better.

Birmingham goal: Obafemi Martins capitalises on some questionable Owls defending to score his first goal in the blue of Birmingham. Michael Morrison misses a header at the back for Wednesday and Martins, one-on-one with Nicky Weaver, shifts the ball onto his left foot and slots it home. Birmingham cruising.

Stoke goal: You'd have had good money on this, I'm sure... a long throw from Rory Delap is poorly dealt with by Brighton keeper Peter Brezovan and Stoke's big striker John Carew is on hand to nudge the ball over the line.

Florent Malouda gets in behind the Everton defence in the box, the ball eventually falling to Frank Lampard, who has just the keeper to beat - but the midfielder goes for the audacious lob instead of power and dinks it well over the bar. 1411: Almost an immediate impact from the Toffees substitute, but Victor Anichebe just fails to get on the end of a fine cross into the box from Diniyar Bilyaletdinov.

1410: Everton change - Victor Anichebe on for Jermaine Beckford. Into the last 10 minutes of normal time, with extra-time and penalties firmly in the reckoning here...

1407: Deary me - I guess that underlines, again, why John Terry is a centre-half not a centre forward. The Chelsea captain does well to make up ground and get on the end of Didier Drogba's cross, but instead of pulling the trigger with just the keeper to beat, he opts to clip a cross in that Everton are able to clear. Moments later Frank Lampard lets fly from range, but his effort zips past the post.

1405: I wonder what Reading - who will travel to the winners of this match in the next round - are making of today's encounter? Not much on offer to unduly worry them so far, I'd say.

1404: Better from Everton as they at least work Petr Cech on the back of another decent move, Seamus Coleman beating Ashley Cole to Diniyar Bilyaletdinov's cross but seeing his downward header saved by the Chelsea keeper.

From the resulting corner, Branislav Ivanovic prods at goal unmarked, but it hits his own player in Kalou and flies away. Couple of great chances.

1353: As with much of the first half, Everton completely dominating possession at Stamford Bridge. Now can they add a clinical finish to their build-up play?

1341: How much space? Frank Lampard rolls a corner into Didier Drogba's feet inside the Everton box but the Ivorian - completely unmarked - sees his first-time effort blocked well by Phil Neville.

1340: Another booking, Leighton Baines having his name taken this time for a clumsy ankle tap on Ramires. Replays showed Phil Dowd got that right too - he's having a good game the Staffordshire official.

1337: Close! Didier Drogba swings in a free-kick from deep - it just eludes the head of Salomon Kalou six yards out - but still it looks like it might creep in until Tim Howard gets across to smother it. Good keeping from the Toffees stopper there.

1318: And that's pretty much the last action of the half - there goes the whistle.

1316: Controversy. Ramires surges on to a pass into the box and touches it past Tim Howard before throwing himself over on the look-out for a penalty - referee Phil Dowd is having none of it and books the Chelsea midfielder for simulation.

There's no doubt Howard raced off his line and missed the ball - but replays suggest there was no contact on the player and that might just have been an excellent decision by Dowd.

1313: We have our first booking of the game - Florent Malouda for a mis-timed lunge at Seamus Coleman. Few complaints there.

1303: Chelsea have really settled into this match and an opening goal looks only minutes away - Florent Malouda, only just back on the pitch after being ordered to remove his rings, is set clear in the Everton box by Didier Drogba, but Tim Howard is out well to save at the Frenchman's feet 10 yards out.

1259: Salomon Kalou is starting to cause havoc up front for Chelsea and another typically bustling run from the diminutive livewire ends with him chipping goalwards in an effort to find the onrushing Ramires, but his cross/shot drifts into the side netting.

1257: Finally this match has sparked into life - and it's Chelsea on the front foot now. Salomon Kalou's fine burst down the right ends with him cutting back to Frank Lampard, whose initial effort is blocked before Florent Malouda, on the follow-up, forces a save from Tim Howard with a 16-yard snap-shot. Much better from the hosts.

1254: And now a chance for Everton, Leighton Baines getting clear again down the left and crossing for Jermaine Beckford, attacking the near post well, but John Terry is back to press well and ensure the Toffees frontman fluffs his finish. Chelsea's Didier Drogba, meanwhile, looks a little more comfortable after shaking off that earlier knock.

1251: Out of nowhere - a glorious chance for Chelsea. Frank Lampard whips in a fine free-kick from deep and Phil Jagielka can only deflect it onto his own post trying to clear his lines inside the box. On the follow-up, John Terry has an apparently open goal to prod into - but the Chelsea captain contrives to spoon his effort over on the stretch. Waste.

1228: Just time, then, for a late-order stat attack. To start us off, let me tell you that Chelsea are hoping to become the first club to reach the last 16 of FA Cup in 13 successive seasons. They've not beaten Everton in their previous four meetings but, with only one defeat in their last 26 FA Cup ties since January 2007, the Blues will be confident of advancing today. The omens do not bode well for Everton. They are without an away win against another Premier League team in the FA Cup since 1990 and have not triumphed at Stamford Bridge since 1994, while Chelsea have not been knocked out in the fourth round or earlier since 1998. And while Chelsea hitman Didier Drogba only has two goals since the turn of the year, he has eight in his last 12 against the Toffees. But then when did anyone believe in omens and jinxes?
