2211: So, Sunderland stay seventh in the Premier League, two points behind Bolton and Tottenham, while Everton move up to 14th, two points above the relegation zone. The Black Cats are at Wolves on Saturday; the Toffees host West Brom.

2205: Sunderland 2-2 Everton
Jon Barbuti reports: "The dreaded rewrite was there for the taking. Thank you Everton's Jermaine Beckford for missing from 10 yards. All square, a fair result."

Sunderland captain Lee Cattermole: "It was a game we thought that we could win, but we've got a point and let's move on to the next game. We've got to have belief and we're pulling together well at the moment, we just have to keep doing it week by week."

BBC Radio 5 live's Danny Mills: "It's difficult for Jermaine Beckford, because he has come from two leagues lower down and it's an almighty jump up in class he's taken. If he'd been at Leeds he'd have probably scored that, but he might have had four or five chances prior to it."

From Cropper on 606: "This has been a great game, glad I decided to turn it on. Both sides could have stolen the win, although a draw is a fair result. Danny Welbeck continues to impress."

2153: Full-time Sunderland 2-2 Everton
You probably can't argue with that result, in fairness. Everton may have just shaded it over the 90 minutes and Jermaine Beckford should have won it, but Sunderland will feel they did enough to get a point and the spoils are shared.

2152: That's the chance of the game. A long pass from the back from Phil Jagielka suddenly sees Jermaine Beckford in-between the two centre-backs and through on goal, but with the winner at his mercy, the former Leeds striker slams a left-foot shot over from 12 yards. Easier to score.

2151: What a chance. Steed Malbranque takes a touch, gets into the box and tees up Danny Welbeck on the penalty spot, but the two-goal hero can only flash a left-foot shot wide of the far post. Seconds left now.

2150: Steed Malbranque drifts effortlessly past Tim Cahill, but from 22 yards he slices a shot miles wide of Tim Howard's left-hand post.

2149: Jermaine Beckford rolls a ball into the box for Yakubu and after rolling one defender, he sees his left-foot shot blocked by Anton Ferdinand, who has had a pretty decent evening.

2148: Sylvain Distin needs a bit of treatment and we're now into four minutes of injury time. What late drama can this weekend's Premier League football finish on?

2144: Steed Malbranque slips a little pass into the Everton box and Darren Bent beats the offside trap, but from a narrow angle on the left he can only fizz a shot into the side-netting.

2143: The home fans have taken a real hit with that goal - can Everton even go on and win this game now? Sunderland make a change, with Ahmed Elmohamady replacing Jordan Henderson.

Everton goal: David Moyes, we bow down before you. Talk about inspired, though it's a pretty unspectacular goal. Mikel Arteta has the ball again on the edge of the Sunderland box and this time he decides to shoot with his left foot - it's not a great strike, but it takes a horrible deflection off Phil Bardsley and wrong-foots Craig Gordon in the Black Cats goal.

2141: GOAL Sunderland 2-2 Everton (Arteta)

2140: Is it too late? Everton bring on strikers Jermaine Beckford and Yakubu in place of the disappointing Louis Saha and Johnny Heitinga. Eight minutes left of normal time.

2137: Everton are having most of the ball, but they are trying to fashion a clear-cut chance instead of just having a pop from around the edge of the box. Louis Saha, Steven Pienaar and Phil Neville all turn down chances to shoot and Sunderland clear.

2134: Everton have a bit more urgency and Anton Ferdinand does well to get up above Louis Saha to head away yet another dangerous Leighton Baines cross from the left. Everton are going to pump an awful lot of balls into that box as time ticks down.

2131: Mikel Arteta plays a pass from 17 yards instead of shooting and Everton have got to be a bit more direct in front of goal now. They have Yakubu and Jermaine Beckford on the bench and they might need both of them.

Sunderland goal: The hosts are ahead - but I do not think Everton are going to be very pleased with that. The corner is cleared out as far as Lee Cattermole and when he sends it back out to the right to Kieran Richardson, the midfielder looks offside. But he's allowed to play on and curls in a fabulous cross that Danny Welbeck gets to first and glances high into the far corner of the net.

2129: GOAL Sunderland 2-1 Everton (Welbeck)

2128: Danny Welbeck slides a pass into the right-hand channel for Darren Bent to chase and his shot is deflected behind for a corner.

2127: Bolo Zenden is taken off by Steve Bruce and Steed Malbranque comes on in his place for Sunderland.

2126: Halfway through the second half now and it remains Sunderland 1-1 Everton. There's a winner here for someone if they gamble enough.

2124: Sunderland give the ball away inside their own half and Everton break as Louis Saha races forward and flicks it to Mikel Arteta, who helps it on to Steven Pienaar, and his left-foot shot from a bit of an angle inside the Black Cats box is deflected behind off Nedum Onuoha. Nothing comes from the corner.

2123: Jack Rodwell does indeed come on for Seamus Coleman as David Moyes makes the first change of the evening. A stay of execution for Louis Saha, no doubt about that.

2122: Scrap that, it's Jack Rodwell who is being given instructions. Hmm.

2121: Everton are in the ascendancy here - if only they had a striker on the pitch capable of sticking it in the net. I think they might be readying Jermaine Beckford. Another Toffees' move gets them into the Sunderland box, but no-one pulls the trigger and the chance goes begging.

From Will, on text: "How is Yakubu not on the pitch? Saha has been appalling. Yakubu would give this Sunderland defence something to think about."

2118: Sunderland keeper Craig Gordon almost spills a routine cross from the left and then slices his hurried clearance horribly out of play. It's all gone a bit pinball recently.

From Hibbo_Scores_We_R1ot on 606: "Go on Moyes, give Beckford a decent amount of time on the pitch. He's not been great so far but given a decent run in the team, he could score some goals. Or at least do more than Saha has done today."

2114: Decent chance for Everton this time after a neat passing interchange just outside the Sunderland box, with Mikel Arteta blazing a few yards over from the edge of the box. At the other end, Darren Bent volleys spectacularly against the crossbar, but he was offside so it wouldn't have counted.

2112: That is magnificent covering defending from Michael Turner. Phil Neville plays a ball over the top of Anton Ferdinand into the path of Tim Cahill and he gets there first ahead of Craig Gordon, lofting it over the keeper only to see Turner hack the ball off the line before colliding with the post. He needs treatment, but he'll be fine to carry on. Top work.

2111: Everton have managed to curtail Sunderland's attacking impetus, for now at least. But there are some more afters, this time between Johnny Heitinga and Kieran Richardson, who have both been booked already. They need to be a bit careful, those boys.

2108: Great stuff from Sunderland - they've raised the roof on Wearside. Firstly Danny Welbeck sees a 20-yard shot take a slight deflection and then force a good, low save from Tim Howard, before Lee Cattermole bursts forward into the area and after he is blocked off, the ball falls to Bolo Zenden who sees his goalbound shot blocked.

BBC Radio 5 live's Danny Mills: "There's still no movement on the Everton bench, which is a bit surprising. Tim Cahill is the one coming towards the ball and he's doing well, but he needs someone running off him and Saha isn't doing that at the moment."

2105: Louis Saha's first touch of the half goes astray and Steve Bruce is screaming his face off on the touchline - it's very much as we were at Sunderland.

2054: By the way, if you want to read more about Carlo Ancelotti and the strange sequence of events at Chelsea in the last few days, my colleague Mandeep Sanghera has written all about it after going to Ancelotti's news conference earlier on Monday. "Ancelotti signed off by light-heartedly asking if it would be safe to buy the newspapers on Tuesday," says Sanghera.

2048: Half-time Sunderland 1-1 Everton
Jon Barbuti reports: "The level scoreline is fair, but to quote my high school art teacher there's plenty of effort, not enough quality. How long do we give it before reporting Louis Saha missing?"

2047: Phil Bardsley curls over a cross from the Sunderland left and Darren Bent gets across his marker to glance a header over. Was difficult, because he was facing away from goal, too.

2045: Into two minutes of injury time at Sunderland.

2044: Everton's plan is this: get the ball to Leighton Baines down the left and get Tim Cahill into the box. The left-back floats over his umpteenth cross but it's a bit behind Cahill and he can only head back across goal, with Seamus Coleman nodding over from an angle.

2043: Ugly passage of play as the teams take it in turns to launch it aimlessly, head it miles into the air and give it away too easily. It's occasionally excellent, occasionally horribly scrappy.

2042: Bolo Zenden whips a free-kick in from the Sunderland right and Tim Howard does well to punch clear above a host of bodies. Incidentally, Darren Bent has been very, very quiet on his return to the Black Cats side so far tonight.

From David, Sunderland fan, on text: "That was great play from Zenden for Sunderland. He has been amazing in the games he has played this season, particularly Chelsea away, and now tonight."

2039: There's a real spark to the game now, with both sides believing they can go on and win it. It's Jordan Henderson's turn to send over a decent cross from the Sunderland right, but none of his team mates have gambled in the six-yard box and another chance goes begging.

2036: Leighton Baines sends over another fine corner, this time from the right, but it misses everyone inside the six-yard box and runs away to safety for Sunderland. Moments later Louis Saha cuts in from the right and fires in a low shot that Craig Gordon saves with his legs.

From Rio Ferdinand on Twitter: "Sunderland vs Everton, good game so far. Welbeck looking top notch here, run across the front post is an unselfish but fruitful run at times."

2032: My word, Everton could barely have got any closer to re-taking the lead. Leighton Baines whips in a corner from the visitors' left and Tim Cahill gets across his man to head goalwards, only to see Jordan Henderson nod it off the line. Moments later Craig Gordon comes for a long pass and misses it and Sylvain Distin side-foots way over from 22 yards.

2030: Tim Cahill is not happy - not happy with Louis Saha, who has had a non-existent time so far in the north-east, and not happy with the assistant referee who just flagged him offside. Had half an hour, it's Sunderland 1-1 Everton.

2026: It's a different game now. Phil Neville uncharacteristically gives the ball away down the Everton right and Phil Bardsley surges forward, playing a pass in for Kieran Richardson, the midfielder firing a yard or two wide from just outside the box.

From Royal Blue Hakuren on 606: "I'm just scared by the thought of playing without Tim Cahill. I just can't imagine previous six year without him. And I'm equally scared of "Life after Tim" in 3-4 years' time... That guy is spine, heart and soul of the club."

Sunderland goal: That was like the Bolo Zenden of old, that. The former Dutch flyer rolls back the years down the right to spin past Steven Pienaar and then twist Leighton Baines this way and that before firing in a low cross that the in-form Danny Welbeck converts from about eight yards. It's another cracker, isn't it?

2023: GOAL Sunderland 1-1 Everton (Welbeck)

2019: Good handbags between Kieran Richardson and Seamus Coleman, who grapple with each other needlessly after the ball has gone following a tackle and they are trying to get back up. Better refereeing, as Peter Walton tells them to cut it out. It's feisty.

2017: Sometimes you just want referees to have a think. Kieran Richardson does so well to turn away from two players and manages somehow to stay on his feet, but Peter Walton pulls him back to award a free-kick to Sunderland and book Johnny Heitinga too.

2016: Kieran Richardson goes the long way round as he tries to get Sunderland going again, taking the ball down the left and lofting over a cross to the back post, where Bolo Zenden heads it down into the path of no-one in a red-and-white shirt.

2014: Bit better from Sunderland as first Bolo Zenden's attempted through ball for Darren Bent is intercepted by Phil Neville, while moments later Jordan Henderson's cross into the box almost finds Bent, only for Tim Howard to claim well.

2012: Everton try to clear their lines after a Sunderland set-piece, but Louis Saha controls the ball with his arm and Sunderland have a free-kick 25 yards out... Jordan Henderson curls it low towards the bottom corner, but Tim Howard makes a very comfortable save.

From eric the mighty on 606: "Whenever I see Sunderland's Turner on the telly, it's as though one of those Easter Island statues has come to life and is busy harassing strikers."

2008: Steve Bruce is raging on the touchline and you can hardly blame him - shocker of a start for his side, so slack in contrast to their blinding display last week. They're chasing the game now.

Everton goal: It's a gift - and how the visitors needed one. Sunderland's defending is woeful as they allow Leighton Baines and Steven Pienaar to play a simple one-two down the left and when Baines whips in a cross, it won't surprise you in the slightest to find out that it is Tim Cahill who gets in-between two defenders to head into the corner past Craig Gordon.

2005: GOAL Sunderland 0-1 Everton (Cahill)

2003: Bad news from the Sunderland website on injured defender Titus Bramble: "Titus has nicked the meniscus in his knee and may need an operation." Meanwhile, scrappy start on the pitch.

2001: Already a good burst forward from midfield by Jordan Henderson, who wins an early corner off Sylvain Distin. The set-piece is headed away by Seamus Coleman.

2000: Bang on cue, we are under way in the Premier League as Sunderland take on Everton.

1956: The teams, captained by Lee Cattermole and Phil Neville, are led out by referee Peter Walton at the Stadium of Light. Don't ask me how you can tell, but it looks freezing, and we're moments away from kick off.

1955: According to Infostrada Sports and their Euro Club Index, Sunderland (ranked 92 in Europe) have a 33% chance of winning tonight, while Everton (27th) are 36% likely to triumph.

1952: It was quite a Sunderland-heavy start, wasn't it? It's Everton's special night too, though, and my word do they need to kick-start their season at the Stadium of Light. Just when it looked like they had turned their campaign around, the Toffees haven't won in three and are a solitary point above the dreaded drop zone. They like playing the Black Cats, though - Everton have won 10 and drawn two of the last 12 meetings in all competitions. Oh - 1-0, December 2001, Claudio Reyna winner, before you ask.

1950: Talking of Bolo Zenden, he's up against family tonight. The Sunderland midfielder's sister Charlotte is married to Everton enforcer Johnny Heitinga, who lines up on the opposite side of the pitch to brother-in-law tonight. Wonder if Mrs Heitinga will be there?

Still, one of the players coming in is top scorer Darren Bent so don't feel too sorry for him. If there is a counter adage advising against retaining a losing side, David Moyes has gone against it as Everton name the 11 that lost to Arsenal last time out. Louis Saha is the sole striker, but Yakubu and Jermaine Beckford are waiting on the bench."

1939: No, I hadn't forgotten Bolton. I mean, who in their right mind could forget the Champions League-chasing (don't tell them that) Trotters? They destroyed Newcastle on Saturday to go (briefly) fourth, and our chief football writer Phil McNulty has blogged on Owen Coyle, the miracle-making manager at the Reebok. Great quote from Jimmy Armfield: "Owen loves the game and you can sense that by listening to him. He talks 20 to the dozen about the game."

1921: Breaking news: Asamoah Gyan misses out tonight, Darren Bent returns to start for Sunderland.

1920: Tonight, on a misty, murky Monday, will there be magic in the air on Wearside? Sunderland could end up anywhere from fifth to ninth come the end of the night, while opponents Everton could shoot up from 16th to the top 10 with victory in the north-east.

1918: It might have been eight days ago, but it's still worth talking about. Chelsea might well be struggling, but quite frankly I don't think I've ever seen a Sunderland team play like that in my life (apart from when they spanked us 3-0 at the City Ground in March 1998, anyway). Steve Bruce was Mr Cautious in the aftermath, saying only: "We've got the makings of a very decent team. But the players must keep proving themselves, and we must keep our feet on the ground." He had to be buzzing underneath though, surely?

1915: The last time I saw my team play anything near as well as Sunderland did in their demolition of Chelsea last weekend, it proved to be as good as it gets, as Forest followed up a 3-1 hammering of West Brom in January by not winning any of their next 11 away games and failing to get promotion. So, Black Cats - you've set the bar high, can you reach that level every week? Tonight, we start to find out. One-off or taste of things to come?
