2227: And so ends a frustrating night of football for the home nations, who managed not a single win between them... and have to wait until March next year for their next Euro 2012 qualifying games. Still, at least they will have plenty of time to try to get things right. Uefa are going to wait on their match delegate's report from Genoa before deciding whether to open a disciplinary case.

2215: It's all very tight in Group B following the Republic of Ireland's draw in Slovakia and Russia's win over Macedonia. Russia are top, two points ahead of the Republic, Armenia and Slovakia.

2210: Some bad news for Liverpool fans - Dirk Kuyt and Daniel Agger were both injured on international duty tonight. There is more concern over Kuyt, who picked up an ankle injury early in the Netherlands' 4-1 win over Sweden. Agger, who has had a groin problem, also came off in the first half of Denmark's 2-0 victory over Cyprus.

2205: Credit where credit is due to Scotland. That was a gutsy effort effort from them to come back from 2-0 down to level at 2-2 and give Spain a scare. They were helped by a passionate crowd at Hampden Park but lost out to that Fernando Llorent sucker-punch. That result, and the Czech Republic's 2-0 win over Liechtenstein, means the Scots are down to third in Group I and have played a game more than both the teams above them.

2145: Kevin Davies marks his England debut with... a booking. He's used to being shown yellow, of course, but this is a very harsh decision. He backs into Miodrag Dzudovic, who goes down in apparent agony even though there was hardly any contact.

2142: England's turn to get lucky. Milan Jovanovic controls the ball 25 yards from goal and smashes in a dipping shot that beats Joe Hart but smacks against the bar. Montenegro have not done very much at all coming forward tonight, but they almost snatched the points.

Spain goal: Scotland have already climbed one mountain tonight to come back from 2-0 down to 2-2... now they have to do it all again. Stephen McManus misjudges Joan Capdevila's cross and Fernando Llorente sweeps it past Allan McGregor from the edge of the six-yard box. Around 10 minutes of the 90 left.

2137: Spain's first sight of goal for a while sees substitute Pablo Hernandez attempt to to curl a shot into the corner... but keeper Allan McGregor saves with an outstretched leg.

2136: Two late goals for the Swiss flattered the home side who run out 4-1 winners. Wales had their chances but ultimately, mistakes in defence undone the visitors, who are now three matches without a point, and seemingly out of contention in Group G.

2135: Another change by Fabio Capello. Shaun Wright-Phillips is on for Ashley Young.

2134: A decent spell for England, who pepper the Montenegro goal with shots. Wayne Rooney forces a great save from Mladen Bozovic when the ball drops for him inside the box, and Bozovic is also equal to Steven Gerrard's effort from further out.

2132: Kevin Davies has got about 20 minutes to make an impact on this game. He can handle himself, as I'm sure you already know, so he should enjoy himself against the Montenegro defence.

2130: Here comes Kevin Davies... who at 33 is England's oldest debutant since 1950. He replaces Peter Crouch.

Scotland goal: Amazing scenes at Hampden as Scotland draw level with the world champions. James Morrison's low cross is turned into his own net at the near post by Gerard Pique, and Craig Levein's side have got 20 minutes left to find a winner.

Switzerland goal: A miserable night for Wales continues as the Swiss add a fourth goal with a sweeping move. Eren Derdiyok charges forward and his low cross is turned home from close range by Valentin Stocker.

Scotland goal: Hope for Craig Levein's side? It's certainly a cracking goal anyway. Kenny Miller clips over a searching cross from the right and Steven Naismith flings himself at it to score with a diving header.

2119: That's the best football England have played all night. Steven Gerrard feeds Wayne Rooney inside the area but his shot is superbly saved by Mladen Bozovic... who is up quickly to smother Peter Crouch's attempt to reach the rebound.

2118: Can the Republic of Ireland steal the points in Slovakia? Almost. Kevin Kilbane's low cross is superbly controlled by Robbie Keane - beating his marker in the process - but his shot from 15 yards is blazed over the bar.

Spain goal: David Villa squares the ball for Santi Cazorloa and, even though Stephen McManus blocks his shot, the loose ball falls to Andres Iniesta and he guides a low strike past keeper Allan McGregor.

2117: England keep running into brick walls and the frustration gets to Wayne Rooney momentarily. He dashes 25 yards to clip the heels of Montenegran midfielder Simon Vukcevic, and it's a needless booking for the Manchester United striker.

Switzerland goal: I'm afraid to say that Brian Flynn's 55th birthday is going to end in a defeat for his Wales side. It's never a penalty though, because Tranquillo Barnetta should get an oscar for the way he flings himself to the ground in the area under challenge from James Collins (well, he was stood near him anyway). Gokhan Inler despatches the spot-kick clinically.

2111: England are still flattering to deceive. Wayne Rooney tries his luck from the edge of the box but fires over. Soon after, Steven Gerrard whips in a decent cross from the right but no-one can get near it.

2109: Not much goalmouth action in Zilina to tell you about in the second half, mainly because the Republic of Ireland are sitting back. Slovakia look more likely to score and have just gone close, with Miroslav Karhan blasting over when a corner is not properly cleared.

Euro 2012 qualifying Nathan: "Czech Republic comfortably see off Liechtenstein 2-0 to move second in Scotland's group behind Spain. The Netherlands even more comfortable against Sweden, 4-1 they lead thanks to two goals each from Ibrahim Afellay and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. Andreas Granqvist pulled one back but surely only a consolation for the Swedes."

2106: We are back under way at Wembley.

2105: End to end stuff in Basle. Andy King heads a ball back across goal but Swiss keeper Marco Wolfli gets there a fraction before the onrushing Gareth Bale.

2104: Scotland start the second half against Spain. Lee McCulloch has picked up a knock so Charlie Adam is on instead.

2103: But Switzerland are looking dangerous too. Reto Ziegler brings a fine stop out of Wayne Hennessey before Valentin Stocker skews the rebound high and wide.

2102: Gareth Bale has been Wales' best player going forward tonight by a country mile, despite Switzerland's best attempts to crock him. He gets down the left again and finds Simon Church at the near post, but the Reading striker cannot find the target.

2050: We're into added time at the end of the first half at Wembley. Glen Johnson gets in a great position on the right-hand side of the area but elects to cross instead of having a pop himself. He finds Wayne Rooney, who failes to get hold of his shot.

2048: Wayne Rooney has been pretty quiet for England so far... how wonder how long it will be before the crowd start calling for Kevin Davies to be brought on? Would they really do that, though?

Spain goal: No disputing this penalty, which is awarded when a Sergio Ramos shot hits Steven Whittaker on the arm. David Villa steps up... and just about beats Allan McGregor, who guessed the right way and got a hand to the ball as well.

2046: Slovakia are enjoying a good spell at the start of the second half. They are putting Ireland under pressure and despite not creating much in terms of goalscoring opportunities, the momentum is firmly in their favour.

2043: More bad news from Genoa where the match at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium between Italy and Serbia has been suspended because of the crowd trouble. Referee Craig Thomson has called a halt to proceedings after seven minutes.

2042: Montenegro are still sitting back, and waiting. About eight minutes to go until half-time, and it is going to take an England goal to change the pattern of this game.

Euro 2012 qualifying Nathan: "Netherlands take a two-goal lead to the break against Sweden in Amsterdam, Ibrahim Afellay adding to Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's early opener. France are up and running against Luxembourg thanks to Karim Benzema's lef-foot volley and Russia lead Macedonia in the Republic's group through the in-form Alexander Kerzhakov."

2038: Wales and Switzerland have restarted too. At Wembley, Adam Johnson curls a super free-kick over the Montenegro wall and sees the ball zip a couple of inches wide of the upright. That was close.

2033: Another chance for Spain and, again, Scotland are grateful to their keeper Allan McGregor. David Villa swivels to fire in a left-footed shot but McGregor is there to push it away.

2030: Better by England, well for a while anyway. After a neat passing move, Miodrag Dzudovic steps in to block Ashley Young as he runs towards the area. Sadly, Young wastes the free-kick, and it drifts past the far post without a team-mate in sight.

2028: Montenegro look very solid don't they? The visitors are packing their defence and you can see why England are trying to spread the ball out wide. Fabio Capello's men are dominating possession but struggling to do anything meaningful with it. Still, it's early days.

Here's some news for you, and it isn't good. The start of the Italy-Serbia qualifier has been delayed because of Serbia fans throwing flares on to the pitch and lighting fireworks. The teams came out and began to line up for the national anthems but then were sent back into the changing rooms as police in riot gear came out to confront the fans.

2025: Spain are knocking on Scotland's door again and David Silva is clean through, only to be denied by Allan McGregor. But the Scots are attacking too, and James Morrison's shot might have done some damage had it not been blocked by Joan Capdevila.

2024: Oh dear. He should do better there, a lot better. A quick Steven Gerrard free-kick finds Glen Johnson, whose cross drops right on to the head of the unmarked Peter Crouch - only for the frontman to nod harmlessly over from 12 yards out.

Republic of Ireland missed penalty: Jan Mucha rather needlessly sends Aiden McGeady tumbling as he chases a ball into the box. Definite contact there and a definite penalty too. Much delays the spot-kick, then plunges to his right to keep out Robbie Keane's shot, and the half-time whistle blows immediately afterwards.

2018: Wales are down to 10 men, temporarily at least, because Gareth Bale has cut his chin and has blood all over his nice white shirt. He has nipped off to change, and get patched up too I presume.

2017: Spain are first to threaten at Hampden, where Xabi Alonso releases David Villa. He takes a touch but, under pressure from Steven Whittaker, ends up skying his shot.

2016: Ireland are inches away from regaining the lead in Slovakia when Shane Long's cross from the right narrowly evades Robbie Keane's sliding attempt to make a telling touch in the six-yard box.

From BBC Scotland's Colin Moffat at Hampden: "Wait a minute, the famous Manolo has just struck up a noisy drumbeat - only to be drowned out by a stirring version of Flower of Scotland."

2015: Wales are looking for another leveller in Basle but they have just wasted a decent chance to get one. The ball drops for Danny Collins after a scramble inside the Switzerland box but the defender can't keep his half-volley down and it flies over the bar. Open game this, with both sides throwing numbers forward.

2014: Ashley Young is seeing a lot of the ball in the early stages, as England try to spread it wide. Young immediately cuts inside and makes space for a shot, which is a good idea. It's just a shame he balloons his effort a mile high and wide.

2012: A warning for England? Adam Johnson loses possession on the right and Glen Johnson and Rio Ferdinand miss tackles as Montenegro break... but the attack ends when Radomir Djalovic screws a tame effort wide from 20 yards.

Slovakia goal: Marek Hamsik's corner is flicked on at the near post and Jan Durica meets it with a header that crashes off the underside of the bar and into the net. All-square in Zilina.

2008: Almost the perfect start for England. Steven Gerrard's raking through ball (from his own half) beats the Montenegro defence and is only just too far in front of the stretching Peter Crouch, who only just fails to get a toe on it. If he had done, England would be ahead.

1959: It's anthem time at Wembley. The Montenegro effort is a new one on me... but a very upbeat little number.

Switzerland goal: A really scrappy one this, and very fortunate too. The game is allowed to continue after a couple of hefty challenges by both sides on the edge of the box and, with James Collins playing three Swiss players onside, the ball is chipped to Marco Streller, who swipes at it first-time and slices it into the corner. He definitely didn't mean that.

Republic of Ireland goal: Their first real attack sees the Republic of Ireland take the lead. Keith Fahey's free-kick is not dealt with by Slovakia and the ball falls nicely for Sean St Ledger to tuck it away at the far post.

More of an attacking Scotland team by Craig Levein compared to the 4-6-0 set up that lost to Czech Republic on Friday. Striker Kenny Miller is back in the side, while midfielder Lee McCulloch returns from suspension and full-back Phil Bardsley makes his international debut. Jamie Mackie, Gary Caldwell and the injured Alan Hutton make way. Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso has recovered from flu to play for the world and European champions, who are missing Fernando Torres and Xavi through injury.

Captain Ashley Williams has overcome an ankle injury and starts. Cardiff's Darcy Blake makes his Wales senior debut at right-back and there are first starts for midfield duo Andrew Crofts and Andy King. Reading's Simon Church is the lone striker up front.

1859: Talking of left-backs, I used to play against Kenny Sansom's brother. He wasn't up there to be honest - think shorter and fatter than Kenny and you're on the right lines. I also played five-a-side a couple of times against the brother of legendary Welsh keeper Neville Southall. He didn't wear a t-shirt, preferring a bin-bag because he could just throw it away afterwards. Let's just call him a 'character' shall we...

1854: Back to England now, and worth remembering that Ashley Cole will join Kenny Sansom as England's most-capped left-back tonight when he makes his 86th appearance for his country. Cole must be up there as England's best-ever left-back, even if he is not the most popular. Maybe he will be appreciated more when he's gone?

1850: Wales fans, do you think Brian Flynn should be kept on as manager after tonight? And, if not him, then who should take charge instead. I looked through the list of candidates a little while ago (the realistic contenders, not including Mark Hughes, Gary Speed or Tony Pulis) and thought that John Toshack would probably have a good chance if he re-applied... not exactly a lot of choice there, and the Welsh FA don't have the money to bring in a big-name foreign coach.

Slovakia v Republic of Ireland team news
Republic of Ireland make two enforced changes to the team that lost 3-2 to Russia on Friday. Liam Lawrence has a leg muscle injury and so Keith Fahey comes into midfield, while Shane Long starts in attack because Kevin Doyle has a knee injury. Slovakia are without injured striker Robert Vittek and suspended Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel. Vladimir Weiss, currently on loan at Rangers from Manchester City, starts in midfield along with danger man Marek Hamsik.

Euro 2012 qualifying Nathan: "Late drama in the Finland-Hungary tie. Former Chelsea and Birmingham striker Mikael Forssell looked to have grabbed a late leveller for the hosts but Balazs Dzsudzsak steals a valuable three points for Hungary in the fifth minute of injury time. Tasty tie in that group coming up as leaders Netherlands face second-placed Sweden. Both sides unbeaten so far and will be favourites to progress."

BBC Sport's Dan Warren at Wembley: "Darren Bent on the cover of the programme for England v Montenegro saying he wants to add to his first international goal. Oops. Then, inside, a fans Q&A with Phil Jagielka. Handy."

Euro 2012 qualifying Nathan: "Armenia can be proud of their start to their campaign and will want a print out of the Group B table as it stands. A crushing 4-0 win over Andorra gives them two wins, a draw and one defeat, leaving them top - ahead of Slovakia, Russia and Republic of Ireland. You would fancy Russia to jump back ahead of them later on, mind. Macedonia await the Russians, while the Republic meet Slovakia."

1815: Here's some more England chat for you too, and it's quite interesting too. Steven Gerrard says he is unhappy to have lost the captaincy to the returning Rio Ferdinand for tonight's match... but he's keen not to rock the boat too much. Gerrard told ITV: "I am disappointed I am not going to be leading the boys out. It has been a terrific experience. I have loved every minute. But I totally understood the situation from day one the reason why I became stand-in captain. Now Rio is back fit he gets the job."

Euro 2012 qualifying Nathan: "If the Faroe Islands' draw against Northern Ireland goes down as a surprise result it's fair to say that Azerbaijan have pulled off a full-blown shock against Turkey. The home side only needed one goal and they had to hold on from the 38th minute, but Azerbaijan have their first win of the campaign and move off the foot of Group A. Big opportunity missed for Turkey with group leaders Germany three points clear and in action now against Kazakhstan."

1807: If you don't know much about England's opponents tonight, Montenegro, can I suggest you take a look at a blog elsewhere on this website by my colleague Jonathan Stevenson. He spoke to 'The Brave Falcons' coach Zlatko Kranjcar (yes, he is Niko's dad), who told him: "We are arriving relaxed, with no 'result' pressure on us. Playing against England at Wembley is a huge motivation for my players and if we manage to use it alongside tactical discipline we might just be able to surprise our hosts."

1755: Faroe Islands boss Brian Kerr celebrates as though he has just won Euro 2012, let alone seen his side pick up their first point of this qualifying campaign. You cannot blame him though, because his side shouldn't have had a look in. After the way Northern Ireland had started in Group C, this performance and result was a major disappointment.

1753: FULL-TIME Faroe Islands 1-1 Northern Ireland

1752: A minute left. Desperate times for Northern Ireland. The Faroe Islands have got a free-kick and they are not exactly in a rush to take it.

1750: Northern Ireland have pushed Gareth McAuley up as third striker and they are still firing balls into the Faroes area... but the home team are holding out.

1749: Four minutes of added time to be played in Toftir. Kyle Lafferty has just tested Jakup Mikkelsen again, but the keeper was equal to his low shot from the edge of the box.

1748: Chris Baird tries to test Jakub Mikkelsen by hoisting a deep cross towards the far post... but the ball sails straight out of play. More quality needed with the final ball by the visitors.

1747: Less than two minutes of the 90 to go. Northern Ireland are pressing hard but they have got to watch out for counter-attacks from the Faroes. Steven Davis just got booked for a foul as he chased back.

1744: We've just heard today's attendance at Svangaskand Stadium - which is 1,921. Full credit to the Northern Ireland fans who made the trip though.

1742: Chris Baird is a bit lucky to get away with that. He kicked out at Arnbjorn Hansen after the pair tangled on the halfway line but I don't think the referee spotted it. Anyway, Corry Evans is on for Niall McGinn.

1737: OK, it's great they have equalised but now Northern Ireland have got about 12 minutes left to try to win this one. Anything else would still be a huge missed opportunity.

Northern Ireland goal: Cue massive sighs of relief in Belfast and beyond. Kyle Lafferty dribbles along the edge of the area and exchanges passes with Chris Brunt before slotting a precise shot past Jakub Mikkelsen and into the net via the far post.

1733: GOALFLASH Faroe Islands 1-1 Northern Ireland (Lafferty)

1730: Another cross, another near miss. Gareth McAuley's cross is flicked on by Kyle Lafferty for Jonny Evans, who sends a looping header on to the roof of the net. I think the referee had already blown up for a foul by Lafferty though - not sure about any foul myself, but this is becoming very frustrating for the visitors.

1728: Kyle Lafferty tees up David Healy from a Steve Davis cross, but his shot is blocked and Chris Brunt blazes the rebound over. The Faroes have got a lot of men back, should Northern Ireland try something different from their tactic of getting wide and putting crosses in the box? Can they do anything different?

1725: A change for the Faroes. Jann Ingi Petersen is on for Daniel Udsen, who made their goal.

1723: Right then. After Joan Edmundsson's low shot is saved by Maik Taylor, Northern Ireland come forward. But first Chris Baird heads wide from close range and Jonny Evans repeats the trick seconds later. Nigel Worthington's men have got 25 minutes or so left to get themselves out of this mess.

Faroes goal: Astonishing. Truly astonishing. The Faroe Islands have barely been out of their own half since the interval but they are ahead. Stephen Craigan takes a heavy touch inside his own area, and after Joan Edmundsson's dive, Daniel Udsen feeds Christian Holst - who turns past Aaron Hughes before beating Maik Taylor with a low shot into the bottom corner.

1718: GOALFLASH Faroe Islands 1-0 Northern Ireland (Holst)

Euro 2012 qualifying Nathan: "Potential shock on the cards in Group A where Azerbaijan lead Turkey 1-0. The home side are yet to pick up a point in their qualifying campaign but lead the Turks thanks to Rashad Sadygov's effort. Armenia, meanwhile are heading to the top of Group B, second half under way there and the hosts are coasting at 4-0 against Andorra."

1716: Kyle Lafferty is getting closer you know. He rises to meet Chris Brunt's wicked cross from the left but his header is brilliantly kept out by Jakup Mikkelsen, who shows great reflexes for a 40-year-old.

1713: David Healy's first effort on goal, and it's not bad either. He makes space for himself on the edge of the area with a neat touch but his low shot is kept out by Jakup Mikkelsen's outstretched hand.

1711: I remember when David Healy couldn't stop scoring for his country. But that was in qualifying for Euro 2008, when he notched 13 times. Now he seems to have forgotten where the net is. The Sunderland striker has gone 14 games without a goal while wearing green (or white, probably). This would be a good time for him to get back into his old habits.

1709: Here he comes. David Healy is on for Warren Feeney and joins Kyle Lafferty up front.

1708: A huge waste by Northern Ireland. Steven Davis slips Niall McGinn free and he rounds Jakup Mikkelsen but can only shoot into the side netting from a tight angle.

1706: Northern Ireland have not exactly come out all guns blazing. In fact, they have come out and fired their first two crosses into the fields behind Jakup Mikkelsen's goal.

1704: The Faroes get the second half under way.

1703: Right then, I think we know who Nigel Worthington will be turning to if this one stays scoreless for too much longer...

1658: As I said earlier, England Under-21s are safely through to the finals of Euro 2011... but sadly their Scottish counterparts will not be joining them. They were beaten 4-2 on aggregate by Iceland after losing the second leg 2-1 on Monday night but they at least had the consolation of seeing Chris Maguire score from the halfway line. 1653: Northern Ireland need to up the ante in Toftir. They've had the better possession and the best chances but have hardly been piling the pressure on the Faroe Islands, who survived the first 45 minutes comfortably enough.

1649: HALF-TIME Faroe Islands 0-0 Northern Ireland

1648: Better by Northern Ireland. Much better. Still no goals though. After some crisp passing, Chris Brunt swings in an inviting cross from the left but Gareth McAuley, arriving late at the far post, can only find the side netting.

1646: We will have two minutes of added time in Toftir... either that, or someone has held up a board with the attendance on it.

1644: Oh dear. We are right at the end of the first half and Northern Ireland really should be ahead. The reason they aren't is that Jonny Evans has just headed over from about two yards out. Evans was under challenge from Daniel Udsen as he met a flick-on from a whipped free-kick, but he should really have found the target there.

1640: Craig Levein, eat your heart out. The Faroes have got about six men defending in their own six-yard box as first Steven Davis, then Kyle Lafferty and Chris Brunt try to find a way through. Brunt lets fly, but it's blocked.

1640: Referee Cyril Zimmermann dishes out his first yellow card in Toftir when Jonas Naes brings down Warren Feeney. Northern Ireland are back on top after a shaky spell.

Euro 2012 qualifying Nathan: "Armenia, fresh from their shock shock 3-1 victory over Group B leaders Slovakia on Friday, are wasting no time in their home game against Andorra. Two goals in the first 15 minutes gives the minnows a healthy lead that would take them above Republic of Ireland, Russia and Slovakia to the top of the table… until the later kick-offs of course."

From Peter in Belfast, via text: "NI fans sing about preferring Steve Davis to Lampard & Gerrard... maybe a bit tongue-in-cheek, but he probably does play better than them at international level. It was a joy to see him making a mockery of Pirlo and co on Friday!"

1633: Simun Samuelsen has just tested Maik Taylor with a long-range shot but Northern Ireland are threatening too. Niall McGinn, now on the right flank, gets a cross in and Jonny Evans sends a rasping shot flying just wide. Still, half-an-hour gone and this game is goalless - things are definitely not going according to plan for Nigel Worthington's men.

1629: Another Faroes chance to tell you about. Christian Holst makes space for a shot on the edge of the box but Maik Taylor is able to gather it at the second attempt. The pitch didn't make that one too easy for the veteran keeper, who is a full 13 months younger than Jakup Mikkelsen, and a mere whippersnapper in comparison.

1626: The Faroe Islands have just had their first real go at goal. Daniel Udsen tries his luck from a free-kick but blasts it way off target.

Hmmm, I think Alan is referring to Scotland's 2-2 draw in the Faroe Islands back in 2002. That one hurt, I think.

1621: This game is fast turning into the Lafferty v Mikkelsen show. The Rangers striker lets fly with another shot, a dangerous looping effort from the edge of the area this time, but the Faroes keeper tips it over the bar. He didn't look 40 then...

1619: A few of you have texted in to say that Jakup Mikkelsen has also spent a bit of time playing in the UK, with Partick Thistle. I've also just spotted that he is 40, and has come out of international retirement to play in this week's qualifiers.

1617: Kyle Lafferty has another pop, this time a shot from the edge of the box, after his own headed flick is not cleared. It's a daisy-cutter, though, and is easily collected by Jakup Mikkelsen.

1615: The pitch in Toftir is not the best. It's very heavy and some big clumps of turf have already been displaced. Still, let's see what Wembley is like tonight before we are too harsh...

1611: Another decent delivery into the area is met by Kyle Lafferty but again he cannot get the better of Jakup Mikkelsen with his header.

1610: There are a couple of other Faroes players you might be familiar with, though. Forward Joan Edmundsson is currently on Newcastle's books and young defender Johan Davidsen used to play for Everton.

1608: That half-chance for Northern Ireland has been their only real opening so far, but the visitors are already enjoying the majority of possession.

1605: Jakub Mikkelsen duly makes his first save of the match. After Gareth McAuley and Chris Brunt link up well on the right, a cross comes over which Kyle Lafferty meets... but he cannot get enough power behind his header to trouble the keeper.

1603: The Faroe Islands player I know most about, Manchester City's reserve goalkeeper Gunnar Nielsen, is injured for this one. I know rather less about Jakup Mikkelsen, who plays for IF Fuglafjorour... but he isn't wearing a bobble hat, which might be a costly mistake.

1555: The players are in the tunnel at Svangaskard Stadium. Well, it's more like a porch actually.

1553: Time for some Faroes facts. Or at least I hope they are. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe there are only two grass pitches in the Faroe Islands (I've never been myself). Northern Ireland are playing at one of them tonight, in Toftir. It's also the only international stadium I'm aware of that is perched on top of a cliff. Again, let me know if there is another one...

1540: The man in charge of the Faroe Islands is former Republic of Ireland boss Brian Kerr, who encounters very different problems as an international manager to the issues that usually concern the likes of Fabio Capello and co. Here's Kerr talking about his squad: "We have a truck driver who was scared of losing a contract, so I had to give up on him. And another who gets paid a lot more for being in work than playing for the national team, but that's the way it is. In the squad we have carpenters, teachers, an accountant, we have a lad who works in the bank and we have some who work in school with children."

Boss Nigel Worthington has made two changes from his side that drew with the Italians on Friday night.
