2202: Over and out. See you tomorrow for more of the same, I hope. And an early reminder: the League Cup Show is on BBC1 tomorrow night at 2325 GMT.

Football League Macca: "So high-flying Leeds continue their rise with a seventh win at home. Wins also for their fellow ex-Premier Leaguers Charlton and Norwich but Colchester lost at Brentford and Huddersfield were held at home to bottom side Tranmere, who remain at the foot. MK Dons drop to ninth. In League Two Rochdale take over at the top after a convincing win at Bradford and Bournemouth failed to beat Barnet. Rotherham lost at Shrewsbury and Notts County hit four past Darlington."

Man United goalscorer Darron Gibson: "It was a good team performance. The young lads did well, put in a good performance - especially after getting beat last week [against Besiktas]."

BBC Sport's Phil McNulty at Old Trafford: "What a tame second half. Spurs barely raised a gallop in pursuit of Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson's side were more than happy to cruise through to the semi-finals in comfort. The big plus for Ferguson was that a talented youngster like Darron Gibson made his point about the Old Trafford production line in powerful fashion."

2154: Fine performance from United's fringe players, while it's all a bit disappointing for Tottenham - but did Harry Redknapp set the tone before the game by saying Champions League qualification was his priority?

2152: FULL-TIME Man Utd 2-0 Tottenham

2152: Lots of fans heading for the exits at Old Trafford... including Sir Alex Ferguson, who signs a few autographs before heading to the dressing room. He misses Peter Crouch heading wide for Spurs.

2150: United are passing the ball around the edge of the box looking for a shooting opportunity, but there's a wall of white in front of them. Ji-Sung Park lifts a clever ball out to Danny Welbeck on the right, but he mis-controls the ball. He eventually passes it back to Federico Macheda, who can only find the side netting.

2149: Portsmouth, by the way, have still never appeared in a League Cup semi-final. Still, I expect they'll probably be OK with that little disappointment if they secure Premier League survival this season.

2147: Danny Welbeck skips away from a Michael Dawson challenge in the area, but he can't see the support coming in, and Dawson gets back to challenge. And it's Dawson who heads away the resulting corner.

2144: Haha. Yes, semi-finals. That's what I mean. Five minutes remaining now at Old Trafford. Tomorrow night: Blackburn v Chelsea, and Man City v Arsenal.

2140: Villa are the first team into the semi-finals. Manchester United are about 10 minutes from joining them. Zoran Tosic will be on the pitch for those final minutes, replacing Anderson in the United midfield.

From The Binocular on 606: "Heskey, Milner, Downing, and Young all score, does Fabio follow the Carling Cup?"

Football League Macca: Scenes of the crazy variety at Huddersfield as Tranmere have equalised for the third time. Michael Ricketts is the scorer and Rovers will just not give in. A Grant Holt penalty has made it 3-0 to Norwich. MK Dons had trailed 2-0, got it back to level but Steve Morison has scored for Millwall and they lead 3-2 now. Aldershot, not Accrington, lead Dagenham 5-2 now. We're close to FT.

2138: Wes Brown has got a cut on his face after taking a whack in the face from his own keeper, so he'll leave the pitch for some treatment.

2138: FULL-TIME Portsmouth 2-4 Aston Villa

Football League Macca: "Leeds are heading for win number 13 of the season as they have gone 2-0 in front courtesy of Luciano Becchio's goal. Lee Hughes has grabbed his 13th of the season in all comps and added to Darlo's misery, scoring a fourth for Notts County and they look like making it a 15th league defeat for Darlington. Huddersfield lead Tranmere 3-2. Ten minutes to go."

Villa goal: That ends that little comeback. Gabby Agbonlahor's cross is weakly cleared and Ashley Young slams it into the roof of the net.

2132: GOAL Portsmouth 2-4 Aston Villa

Portsmouth goal: Four minutes remaining and Pompey are back in it. Hermann Hreidarsson chests Younes Kaboul's long ball into Kanu's path and the sub pokes the ball past the approaching Brad Guzan.

2130: GOAL Portsmouth 2-3 Aston Villa

From acmilandrew on Twitter "Spurs doing the playing while United just doing the scoring. Spurs have to be more clinical."

2128: Great chance for Pompey now. Kanu has a free header right in front of goal from a free-kick but it bobbles weakly into Brad Guzan's hands.

2127: Chances simultaneously at both grounds. Ji-Sing Park's deflected effort goes just wide for United, while Ashley Young chips the ball onto the roof of the net for Villa.

BBC Sport's Phil McNulty at Old Trafford: "It has got to happen soon for Spurs if it is going to happen at all. Manchester United surviving in relative comfort on a night that is in danger of turning out as a real disappointment for Harry Redknapp and his team. Peter Crouch has come on for Robbie Keane, who has been badly out of sorts. Now or never for Spurs."

2124: Pompey had the better of the first 20 minutes of the second half, but Villa are now turning the screw after their third goal. Avram Grant has thrown on Frederic Piquionne to replace John Utaka.

Football League Macca: "Rochdale are running riot at Bradford, they've gone 3-0 up as their rivals continue to struggle. Elsewhere, Aldershot and Dagenham & Redbridge are enjoying a right ding-dong battle - with the Shots leading 3-2 after five goals in 19 manic minutes. In League One, Colchester still trail 1-0 at Brentford, but otherwise the boys at the top are in front after Grant Holt put Norwich in front at Southend."

2122: Subs a go-go at Old Trafford. Michael Carrick and Federico Macheda on for Gabriel Obertan and Dimitar Berbatov. Peter Crouch about to come on for Spurs.

2121: 'Oles' from the visiting fans at Fratton Park as Villa play a bit of keep-ball. And when Pompey win the ball back, the home fans start up the 'oles'. Nice.

2116: Meanwhile at Old Trafford, an excellent chance for David Bentley, who is superbly picked out by Gareth Bale in plenty of space inside the Manchester United penalty area. Bentley tries to place his shot but his effort lacks power and is comfortably saved.

Villa goal: That should be that for Villa. Ashley Young's cross from the right seems to take a deflection and evades everyone, bouncing once before Stewart Downing squeezes a header in at the far post for a goal on his full debut.

2116: GOAL Portsmouth 1-3 Aston Villa

2111: Decent move by Spurs down the right as David Bentley finds Alan Hutton's overlapping run, but the United defence clear Hutton's low ball in.

2109: Portsmouth make the first substitution of the night at Fratton Park as Kanu replaces Danny Webber.

2106: Almost a very embarrassing moment for David Bentley, as, standing just inside the touchline, he catches a ball going out of play. The referee penalises him for handball - but the linesman decides the ball had gone out of play.

2103: Spurs make a half-time change with Tom Huddlestone replacing Wilson Palacios... and they're under way at Old Trafford. Portsmouth, meanwhile, much-improved in the second half by all accounts, but nothing to show for it as yet.

2048: Harry Redknapp trudges off with lips pursed. It could have been worse had any of Gabriel Obertan's team-mates anticipated his first-time low cross seconds before the half-time whistle. Meanwhile, they're back under way at Fratton Park - from where I have no pictures, but I'll do my best with the updates.

2047: HALF-TIME Man Utd 2-0 Tottenham

BBC Sport's Phil McNulty at Old Trafford: "Darron Gibson is presenting the perfect evidence on behalf of Sir Alex Ferguson that the talented young players are stacking up at Manchester United. Great finish after a lovely exchange with Danny Welbeck. Spurs started well but have gone right off the boil and Harry Redknapp looks suitably unimpressed."

2045: From a corner, Spurs tee up Wilson Palacios for a long-range shot - but it's miles over. Couple of minutes until half-time.

Man Utd goal: Well, Tottenham have had plenty of the ball and several great chances in this half - but it looks like they'll be two down at the end of it. Darron Gibson scores his second with a delightful curling shot.

2039: GOAL Man Utd 2-0 Tottenham

2038: Boos at half-time from the home fans at Fratton Park. Avram Grant clearly concentrating on league survival with his team selection tonight.

Football League Macca: "The League Two as-it-stands table looks tidy for Rochdale fans at present. Keith Hill's men are 2-0 away to Bradford and could move above leaders Bournemouth if the Cherries slip up. They were trailing 1-0 at Barnet but Brett Pitman has just grabbed an equaliser. Rotherham are losing 1-0 at Shrewsbury and it just doesn't get any better for basement boys Darlington, who are 3-0 down at Notts County after conceding three goals in the opening 17 minutes."

2033: HALF-TIME Portsmouth 1-2 Aston Villa

2032: Nemanja Vidic denies Robbie Keane - not once, but twice. The United defender gets in an initial block, and though Keane gets to the rebound first, Vidic is there with a perfectly-timed tackle. Brilliant.

2029: About time we had some news from Football League Macca... "We've had over half an hour of action in the Football League and plenty of goals going in. League One leaders Leeds are ahead through Neil Kilkenny, while Deon Burton has put their nearest challengers Charlton ahead at Brighton. Colchester trail at Brentford, while Bristol Rovers are beating Exeter 1-0 and Millwall are 2-0 up against MK Dons."

BBC Sport's Phil McNulty at Old Trafford: "After Sir Alex Ferguson took grave offence that his young players were criticised in some quarters in the wake of the Champions League defeat at home to Besiktas, he will take extra pleasure in that crisp finish from Darron Gibson. Old Trafford nowhere near full sadly, but the home support loved that."

2024: Blimey, that's not going to help David Bentley's chances of getting back into the Spurs team on a regular basis. Spurs have a free-kick on the right wing - and Bentley balloons it straight of play behind the goal. Awful.

2021: I'm drowning under a mountain of De Laet (delay) puns. I know. I've only got myself to blame... Whoah, that's a great chance for Jermain Defoe to level it at Old Trafford. Gareth Bale, who's made a bright start, crosses from the left and the England striker is completely unmarked at the back post. He has time to bring the ball down - but the defender gets in with a last-ditch block.

Man Utd goal: Anderson canters down the left, cuts back, and plays it inside to Darron Gibson, who lets rip from outside the box, low into the corner past a diving Heurelho Gomes.

2017: GOAL Man Utd 1-0 Tottenham

Villa goal: Ashley Young takes the throw-in to James Milner, who turns and unleashes a rocket of a shot into the corner. Asmir Begovic doesn't move.

2012: GOAL Portsmouth 1-2 Aston Villa

2010: Ben Foster is sitting next to Edwin van der Sar in the stands at Old Trafford. He has his arms folded, and looks generally glum. Not surprisingly. It's not a very nice night for watching football either: cold and driving rain.

2008: Jermain Defoe collects the ball on the edge of the box, turns in an instant and hits a right-foot shot through the defender's legs. Well held by Tomasz Kuszczak.

2005: Also, De Laet is apparently pronounced De Lay, which sort of ruins everything. Fratton Park not full tonight, according to the 5 Live Sports Extra team. I can't see that game, by the way, but I'm going to try to bring you as much detail as I can.

2002: Let the puns cease, they're under way at Old Trafford - and the hosts go close immediately, Anderson fizzing a low shot just wide of the post.

Villa goal: See? What's not to love about the Carling Cup? Goals galore. Emile Heskey is clean through and coolly dinks the ball over Portsmouth keeper Asmir Begovic. Two minutes between the goals.

Portsmouth goal: Oh dear. Danny Webber's corner for Pompey is sliced into his own net by Stiliyan Petrov for an own goal.

1955: GOAL Portsmouth 1-0 Aston Villa

BBC Sport's Phil McNulty at Old Trafford: "Ben Foster is not even on the bench for Manchester United tonight after being left out at Portsmouth on Saturday. Tomasz Kuszczak gets the nod in goal again and youngster Ben Amos is substitute. Not exactly what Foster had in mind when he claimed he needed more game time after playing for England against Brazil in Qatar."

1931: And apparently this will be Dimitar Berbatov's first appearance in the Carling Cup since he scored for Spurs in their victory over Chelsea in the 2008 final at Wembley.

Ferguson was stung by criticism of his young brigade after the Champions League defeat against Besiktas at Old Trafford, but he has shown faith again as Gabriel Obertan, Danny Welbeck and Darron Gibson start. A rest on the bench for Ryan Giggs tonight. Spurs captain Robbie Keane is back after being restricted to the bench against Aston Villa and starts up front with Jermain Defoe.

Aruna Dindane and Frederic Piquionne are rested with Danny Webber and John Utaka taking their places. Anthony Vanden Borre comes in for Marc Wilson in defence. Stewart Downing makes his first start for Aston Villa, replacing the injured Nigel Reo-Coker in midfield. Brad Guzan, the penalty-saving hero from the last round, returns to the side in place of Brad Friedel. Other Villa changes from their 1-1 league draw with Tottenham on Sunday are Emile Heskey for John Carew in attack and Stephen Warnock in for Habib Beye in defence.
