1806: By my reckoning (which should not be entirely trusted), that takes the average goals per game up to 2.95. Madness. As an anonymous texter wryly observes, Sunderland v Wolves will almost certainly be the first match on MOTD2 on BBC Two at 2200 BST. Ta ta.

1804: Victory takes Sunderland up to eighth in the table, while Wolves languish in 16th. The 'no Premier League win at the Stadium of Light' albatross now weighs a little heavier around Mick McCarthy's neck.

1801: Nice work from BBC 5 Live, who have ex-ref Graham Poll on the blower shortly after the final whistle. He confirms that Lee Mason was correct not to show Craig Gordon a card for handling a backpass. "There is a law that says a keeper can't be punished with a card for handling a back pass." So there you go.

1800: That game was completely bonkers. This may be important news for fantasy football leagues: Sunderland's fifth goal may go down as a Michael Mancienne own goal. Time for the Dubious Goals Panel to earn their corn.

1758: FULL-TIME Sunderland 5-2 Wolves

From Old_Gold on 606 "Not sure how Sunderland have ended up with a 5-2 victory?!"

Sunderland goal: Cruel luck for Wolves. Andy Reid plays the ball through for Darren Bent, whose shot towards the far corner takes a deflection off Michael Mancienne and beats Wayne Hennessey at his near post.

1754: GOAL Sunderland 5-2 Wolves

1752: Sunderland take a corner and play keep-ball by the flag. Boooooooo. No one wants to see that. The linesman puts an end to it by penalising Andy Reid for shirt-pulling. Hurray! More goals now please. Plenty of time - five added minutes.

1749: Best game of the season, suggests someone on 606 . I think the frankly hopeless defending would rule it inadmissible for that particular honour. But this second half has certainly been one of the most entertaining halves I've seen.

1747: Ball comes back to Jordan Henderson on the edge of the box, but he scuffs his shot and it's easy for Wayne Hennessey. A fifth would be harsh on Wolves. Six minutes remaining.

From Darrell via text on 81111: "This game is super, all credit to both teams, a poor looking game on paper, but on the pitch, it's been a sensational second half."

1743: Wolves sub Sylvan Ebanks-Blake has a header a few yards out - but straight to Craig Gordon.

1741: Kieran Richardson now makes a vital block, and moments later Matt Jarvis smashes a volley over the bar. Wolves not giving up on this yet.

1738: Sunderland may win this game, but Steve Bruce must be alarmed by his side's defending. Anton Ferdinand comes on and is asked to play at right-back. He is immediately caught out of possession and is lucky to see Kevin Doyle's shot deflected behind. From the corner, Greg Halford's header is headed off the line by Kieran Richardson - who has now probably made up for his earlier clanger.

Sunderland goal: Darren Bent's low shot is well-saved by Wayne Hennessy but it's a temporary reprieve for Wolves. Michael Turner times his run to perfection to meet Kieran Richardson's corner with a bullet header. No defender on the post for Wolves.

1735: GOAL Sunderland 4-2 Wolves

Sunderland goal: Stunning strike. Darren Bent chests a long ball back into the path of Kenwyne Jones, who twists one way, then the other, before arrowing a low right-footed shot into the far corner. No chance for Wayne Hennessey.

1732: GOAL Sunderland 3-2 Wolves

1728: Lots of you want to know why Craig Gordon wasn't sent off for deliberately preventing a goalscoring opportunity. Think the rules differ on handling back-passes.

From Jim Gaffigan! on 606: "Steve Bruce must be seething; considering the fact that the early goal in the second half should've killed this game off!"

1724: What a recovery from Wolves - even if it is thanks to two of the more bizarre goals you'll see this season.

Wolves goal: The free-kick is sidefooted to Karl Henry, whose shot is blocked but Kevin Doyle rams in the rebound and Wolves are level. Two goals in five minutes. Kieran Richardson should be hanging his head in shame. Wasn't Steve Bruce tipping him to be an England left-back this week?

1718: GOAL Sunderland 2-2 Wolves

1717: DRAMA! Kieran Richardson makes a complete mess of his backpass, completely overhitting it, and Craig Gordon has to dive and palm it off the line. Free-kick six yards out... love it.

Wolves goal: Bizarre goal - but Wolves are right back in it. Christophe Berra's cross-shot is punched away by Craig Gordon, but the ball hits his team-mate John Mensah and goes into the net for an OG. The Wolves fans take several seconds before they notice they've actually scored.

1711: GOAL Sunderland 2-1 Wolves

Sunderland goal: Ah. Not sure that was the start Wolves were after. Darren Bent gets his foot to a cross first and Christophe Berra bundles into him. Oddly, Bent is replaced on penalty-taking duties by Kenwyne Jones, who sends Wayne Hennessy the wrong way.

1709: GOAL Sunderland 2-0 Wolves

1709: PENALTY TO SUNDERLAND

1707: A change for either side for the second half. Cheeky. Michael Kightly is on for Wolves, Jordan Henderson for Sunderland. Segundo Castillo and Lee Cattermole are the men to make way. Cattermole did receive treatment for a knock in the first half.

1702: You know how England's cricket team start winning games every now and again just so we all get our hopes up that they might actually win something and then have them crushed again? They're at it again... I still refuse to believe they actually won the Ashes. It's too ridiculous.

1656: Around about now, Roy Keane will probably doing his 37th circuit of the local park with his dog Triggs. He has led Ipswich to their worst ever start to a league season, culminating in a 4-0 thumping by Newcastle yesterday. Our own Paul Fletcher has written another annoyingly good blog about it.

1651: HALF-TIME Sunderland 1-0 Wolves

1650: Inches away. Matt Jarvis deliver an inswinging free-kick from the left and Kevin Doyle's back-header flashes past the post. Best spell of the game for Wolves.

1648: Brilliant turn from Andy Keogh, and he drives into the penalty area. John Mensah does well to stay on his feet and shepherd Keogh away from danger.

1645: More of those Ferdinand-Turner scrap rumours (see 1616). Apparently, it was an over an iPod. Well, that's fair enough then.

1640: Lordy. This game is going at quite a pace. Karl Henry's name goes into the book for an industrial challenge on Lee Cattermole in the centre circle. A Cattermole-esque challenge, actually.

1639: Kevin Doyle needs attention after feeling an accidental elbow from Michael Turner... Ref restarts play with a drop ball, and a mistake by Michael Mancienne leads to a chance for Darren Bent. Wayne Hennessey makes the block and though Bent picks up the rebound, the angle is too tight and there are defenders back, so he tries to set up his team-mate instead - and Wolves recover.

1638: Michael Mancienne comes to Wolves' rescue. Andy Keogh is caught in possession, and Sunderland break down the right. Steed Malbranque's looping cross is sent back across goal by Andy Reid, but Lee Cattermole's sidefooted effort is blocked by Mancienne.

1633: Great ball by Andy Reid sends Kenwyne Jones galloping through. He just gets to the ball before the keeper but Wayne Hennessy gets his body in the way and Wolves survive.

1632: Big shout for a penalty from the visiting fans as Michael Turner levers Kevin Doyle out of the way before winning his defensive header. Not sure about that one.

1626: Matt Jarvis provides a lovely, dinked cross from the left but David Edwards glances a header just wide, with Andy Keogh stretching but failing to poke it in at the far post.

1622: Late challenge by Michael Turner on Kevin Doyle earns the Sunderland defender the first yellow card of the game. He is quickly followed into the book by Doyle. Following a calamitous free-kick by George Elokobi, which goes straight to Kenwyne Jones, Doyle drags back the Sunderland striker as he tries to take the ball out of defence.

BBC 5 live analyst Pat Nevin on Sunderland defender John Mensah: "He's a big old lad. Every time the ball comes over, he seems to be holding a player's shirt, usually Andy Keogh's."

1616: Darren Bent is about an inch offside as a long ball comes over. Flag goes up to the relief of Wolves. There are rumours at the Stadium of Light that Sunderland defenders Anton Ferdinand and Michael Turner had a falling-out in the dressing room prior to the game.

1612: Wolves have a chance to hit back straight away when Paulo da Silva fouls Andy Keogh. Comfortable take for Craig Gordon from Greg Halford's free-kick.

Sunderland goal: Sucker punch for Wolves. Segundo Castillo gets the wrong side of Darren Bent, but he does get a touch of the ball - so the penalty is harsh. Lee Mason has no doubts though and Bent sends a superb spot-kick low into the right-hand corner.

1609: GOAL Sunderland 1-0 Wolves

1608: PENALTY TO SUNDERLAND

1607: Wolves snapping into the their tackles in midfield - and it's the visitors who win the first corner. Cleared by Andy Reid.

1604: Frantic start this. Bent hobbles off - but is back on again in a flash. Long ball punted forward and Wolves keeper Wayne Hennessy foolishly comes to the edge of his area, and his weak header goes straight to Bent. The striker drives the shot far too high though.

1602: Problems already for Sunderland. Wolves defender George Elokobi tackles Darren Bent from behind and leaves the Sunderland striker in a heap. Treatment time.

1601: Mick McCarthy and Steve Bruce share a friendly handshake as they get to the dug-outs. And after a Wolves huddle, we're under way.

1559: Four draws in Serie A today - which is as many as there have been in the entire Premier League season so far. A last-gasp equaliser from Bologna scuppers Juventus's hopes of toppling leaders Sampdoria.

1551: A fact that Mick McCarthy has been reminded of approximately 3,251 times this week: he is yet to win a Premier League game at the Stadium of Light. In 19 attempts with Sunderland in 2005/6, he failed to win once.

1545: TEAM NEWS Sunderland v Wolves
Sunderland defender John Mensah makes his first Premier League start, with Anton Ferdinand dropped to the bench. Jordan Henderson and Fraizer Campbell scored in the Carling Cup in midweek but make way for Lee Cattermole and Darren Bent. Wolves boss Mick McCarthy, a former Sunderland manager, makes seven changes from the team that lost to Manchester United in the Carling Cup on Wednesday.

1542: We've had two games already today, and one one goal. Nottingham Forest edged out Plymouth 1-0 in the Championship, while Wrexham and Chester played out a goalless draw in the Blue Square Prem.

1538: Re-arrange the words 'Mayor's', 'after', 'show', 'Lord' and 'the' into a popular phrase or saying and you'll get some way to the pervading feeling about today's game. It's a crucial one for both teams though: Wolves will look at this as a decent chance to win away for the second time this season, while Sunderland will have this down as a home banker.

1530: Hello there. So far this season, we've seen 185 goals in the Premier League. That's a barely believable average of 2.89 goals per game. Yesterday's bumper delivery of 26 goals in eight games actually pushed the average up. I'm not saying you've got a lot to live up to, Sunderland v Wolves. No, no, don't go thinking that.
