1934: A whopping 32 goals today as the Premier League makes a welcome return. That's an average of four per game, stat fans. More of the same tomorrow, I hope, with far less of the technical problems - for which I again apologise and humbly beg your forgiveness. Enjoy the rest of your Saturday.

1930: A reminder that Match of the Day is on at 2305 BST on BBC1 and there's absolutely no need to get out of armchair when it finishes because it is followed by the Football League Show at 0025 BST.

1927: A reality check for Spurs, who now find themselves fourth, but still above their north London rivals which might cheer them up a bit. 'Arry's boys are off to Chelsea next weekend.

1925: Manchester United move up to second in the table after overcoming an early Spurs goal and the sending-off of Paul Scholes. City are third - but only on goal difference. That derby nest Sunday should be quite tasty, non?

1924: FULL-TIME Tottenham 1-3 Man Utd

1921: Wayne Rooney bursts into space on the left - again - but he cuts in and sees his shot blocked. Alan Hutton has not had the best of times since coming on for Spurs.

1920: Aaron Lennon has switched to the left wing to get away from Patrice Evra. There he finds John O'Shea, who easily blocks his cross. Four minutes of added time remaining.

1917: Three minutes until the 90, and it is Spurs, with their 11 men, who look a bit weary.

BBC 5 live analyst David Pleat: "I don't think Aaron Lennon has enjoyed this game. Patrice Evra has got the ascendancy. He has got tight to Lennon, and managed to get forward in the second half."

From Doug, Leyland, via text on 81111: "Re 1827/1848: Does this red card mean that Paul Scholes has been sent off for bad tackling in every season of the Premier League?"

1911: Ten minutes remaining, and Anderson will come off to a very warm reception from the visiting fans. Nani is on.

Man Utd goal: Darren Fletcher threads a beautiful pass inside Benoit Assou-Ekotto for Wayne Rooney, who easily beats Alan Hutton and finishes through the legs of Carlo Cudicini. Deadly from United.

1907: GOAL Tottenham 1-3 Man Utd

1906: And now the Spurs crowd are up in arms as Nemanja Vidic leads with his arm in a challenge with Peter Crouch. Both take a hit in the mush - but Spurs win the free-kick.

1905: Peter Crouch and John O'Shea grapple as the ball comes over - and the Tottenham striker is penalised. Crouch is flabbergasted.

1902: Andre Marriner's book will be full soon. Jermaine Jenas is the latest to see yellow for hauling back Ryan Giggs as the United winger threatens to escape down the left.

1901: Nice burst of pace from Patrice Evra, turning Alan Hutton - but then shooting into the side netting. Niko Kranjcar comes on for his Spurs debut, replacing Robbie Keane.

1900: Still 20 minutes remaining at White Hart Lane...

1859: Alan Hutton replaces Vedran Corluka for Spurs. Not sure if the Croat is injured - although he did seem to be running OK when he went off.

1856: Wayne Rooney gallops away down the left, and is given time to cut inside. He shoots through Vedran Corluka's legs, and even though he must see it very late, Spurs keeper Carlo Cudicini somehow gets a hand to it and deflects the shot onto the bar.

1850: Wayne Rooney is flagged offside. He isn't, but his effort is saved by Carlo Cudicini anyway.

Scholes sending-off: No doubt about the first yellow, but all sorts of doubt about the second. Paul Scholes' mistake is to go to ground as he challenges for a 50-50 ball with Tom Huddlestone, but there doesn't appear to be any intent from the United midfielder, who pulls his studs away as he goes in.

1848: RED CARD Man Utd (Scholes)

1845: ...And from the corner, Peter Crouch rises clear of the United defence but can only plant his header onto the top of the crossbar. Spurs so, so close.

1845: Ben Foster comes to United's rescue with a fingertip save from Jermaine Jenas's ferocious strike...

1844: You'd think a man of Paul Scholes' experience would have learned how to time a tackle by now wouldn't you? Or just learned not to tackle...

1841: Tottenham defender Ledley King is the next man in the book - for a foul on Scholes. By the way, earlier, I said Aaron Lennon was booked for diving. Not for the first time, I was mistaken. He wasn't. Sorry.

1840: Wahay! Jermain Defoe takes a touch in midfield - and is sent up in the air by an appallingly-timed tackle by who else but Paul Scholes? Yellow card.

1837: Good move Tottenham. Benoit Assou-Ekotto crosses from the left and Jermaine Jenas lays it off for Robbie Keane - brilliant block by Nemanja Vidic to deny Spurs an equaliser.

1835: Jermaine Jenas comes on for Spurs after half-time, replacing Wilson Palacios. Tom Huddlestone a bit fortunate to stay on if you ask me - but Huddlestone isn't on a yellow card and hasn't flown halfway round the world in the last week.

From Pepe MUFC Consoli on 606: "Vidic is having a very poor game for his standards. There have been some shocking fouls on his behalf. Same from Palacios though, in quick succession as well. Tough tackling, entertaining game so far."

1827: Ryan Giggs' goal means he maintains his record of scoring in every Premier League season. So there.

1823: If United go on to win this game, they will go second in the table, three points behind Chelsea. Tottenham will drop back to third. Manchester City are fourth as it stands after their 4-2 win over Arsenal earlier on.

1819: HALF-TIME Tottenham 1-2 Man Utd

1817: Ludicrous challenge by Nemanja Vidic, sending Peter Crouch flying with a wild lunge.

1815: United in control now, and threatening a third before half-time. Paul Scholes pulling the strings in midfield.

Man Utd goal: Go on. Have a guess who scored it? No? It's Anderson, with his first competitive goal for United on his 76th appearance. Paul Scholes's shot rebounds to the Brazilian, who coolly slots in. Surprisingly cool celebration as well.

1812: GOAL Tottenham 1-2 Man Utd

1807: Ref Andre Marriner isn't proving particularly popular with either side. He doesn't seem to have got to grips with the game - which is being played at approximately a million miles an hour.

1804: This game is literally a thrill a minute. Actually, make that a thrill every 30 seconds. Aaron Lennon looks to make up for that earlier aberration with a trademark junking run, which is ended by Nemanja Vidic's outstretched leg just outside the area. Harshly, Lennon doesn't get the free-kick. From the corner, Peter Crouch mis-times his header and the ball dribbles wide.

1802: Where's that goalmouth drama graphic? Mistake by Aaron Lennon, giving possession to Patrice Evra. He crosses for Wayne Rooney, whose shot is saved. Rebound comes to Dimitar Berbatov, whose effort is blocked by Sebastian Bassong. Paul Scholes sets up Berbatov again, but the Bulgarian blazes over.

1759: Brilliant stuff from United. Lightning quick passing. Dimitar Berbatov plucks a driven pass out of the air and volleys it towards goal but Carlo Cudicini tips over.

Man Utd goal: Wayne Rooney shapes to take the free-kick, but it is Ryan Giggs who steps and curls it into the top corner from 25 yards. Is this game going to bother with scrappy goals?

1756: GOAL Tottenham 1-1 Man Utd

1755: Wilson Palacios has been upsetting the United players with his, er, firm tackling, and after getting away with a few, he goes into the book for a foul on Berbatov.

1754: Peter Crouch fires the ball across goal - but Jermain Defoe is inches away from getting the final touch. Oh, he was offside anyway. Plenty of panto boos for Dimitar Berbatov, by the way.

Hughes on his side's win over Arsenal: "We're delighted, it was a big game for us. It was important we made a mark today and we did that, we were good value for the win. Now we have to sustain that performance from now until the end of the season."

Man City boss Mark Hughes on Emmanuel Adebayor's goal celebration: "To a certain extent it's understandable given the last 18 months or so - there was a lot of pent-up emotion there. But he's already apologised for it. It's an emotional game and he just let his emotions run away with him. It would be a shame if that incident overshadows what was a great game."

From I tried to... on 606: "We are awesome at the minute. Please Spurs, don't capitulate."

1747: What's that about? Vedran Corluka's challenge on Patrice Evra upsets the Frenchman and the pair touch heads briefly. Something - but mostly nothing.

1745: Peter Crouch wins the ball and fires a well-struck volley goalwards - but easily dealt with Ben Foster.

BBC 5 live analyst David Pleat: "The Tottenham midfield are hustling - but United are starting to get more possession. What I have noticed is that when Tottenham play the searching ball, Crouch has the jump on Vidic - and that could be important as the game develops."

1741: Tottenham already having plenty of joy down the right, Jermain Defoe crossing in Peter Crouch's direction but Nemanja Vidic gets there with a vital clearance.

1738: The ball sits up for Peter Crouch, whose volley flies just over the bar. Frantic start to the game.

1735: Chance for United to come back almost immediately. Ryan Giggs plays the ball in from the left and it comes all the way to Darren Fletcher, whose low shot is parried by Carlo Cudicini.

Tottenham goal: And you can now see why there might be belief among the Spurs fans. Benoit Assou-Ekotto lofts a ball to the far post where Nemanja Vidic and Peter Crouch rise to challenge for it. The ball lands for Jermain Defoe, who connects beautifully with an overhead kick to stun the champions inside a minute. Brilliant goal, his fifth of the season already.

1732: GOAL Tottenham 1-0 Man Utd

1731: And we're under way at Tottenham. Cracking atmosphere at the Lane. A real sense of belief among the home fans...

1729: And League Two: Bournemouth have gone top of League Two after their 3-1 win over Lincoln City, with Sammy Igoe scoring twice for the Cherries. Dagenham & Redbridge move into second place after holding on for a 2-1 win against Chesterfield despite a late fightback by the visitors. Rotherham slip to third after being held at home by Morecambe but Notts County climb one place to fifth after fighting back from a goal down to thump Northampton 5-2 with Matt Ritchie and Lee Hughes both scoring twice. At the bottom of the table, Grimsby climb to 21st place after Danny North's 88th-minute winner against Hereford gave them their first home win of the season.

1728: Right before we focus on White Hart Lane, a League One update: leaders Charlton were forced to settle for something other than a win for the first time this season as they were held at home by Southampton. Bristol Rovers left it late to move up to third thanks to Jo Kuffour's 90th-minute winner against Oldham, while Tranmere and boss John Barnes's woes continued with a 3-2 home defeat at the hands of Walsall.

Wenger on whether Man City can break into the top four: "It's too early to say that. They defended well and played well on the break. You have to wait a little bit."

Wenger on Adebayor's alleged stamp on Robin van Persie: "I hear that but I have to see the slow motion to assess the situation. I want to see it again on television."

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger on Adebayor's goal celebration: "I cannot control his behaviour but of course, you do not want that."

Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce: "We got what we deserved from a good performance. The players showed a lot of spirit and a lot of quality. It's a relief that we have three points in the bag at last."

Liverpool's hat-trick man Yossi Benayoun: "It was a good day for me but the most important is the three points and we played some good football. I started off on the right but Rafa told me to come in and work in between the lines."

Man City striker Emmanuel Adebayor on his goal celebration against Arsenal: "To be honest, I'm very sorry for all this. Sometimes, the emotion takes over. That's what happened. I was very happy to score the goal. Before the game, people have been saying and writing things and the emotions took over. People who love me and know me know how I behave."

1714: Down in the Championship, West Brom and Middlesbrough have cashed in on Newcastle not playing until tomorrow to go first and second respectively - the Baggies coming from behind to see off Plymouth 3-1, while Boro piled yet more pressure on Ipswich boss Roy Keane with a 3-1 win over the Tractor Boys. Talking of pressure, how will Neil Warnock be feeling after his Crystal Palace side were turned over 4-0 at home by Scunthorpe?

1713: Many of you spotted an incident involving Emmanuel Adebayor and former Arsenal team-mate Robin Van Persie during the second half at Eastlands. It was a wild challenge by the Dutchman, but Adebayor reacts by appearing to kick out at his former team-mate and catches him on the side of the head. Not sure whether referee Mark Clattenburg saw it, but I'm sure we will find out soon enough.

Tottenham are going for broke as they try to end a miserable run against Man Utd in the league, with Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch and Robbie Keane all starting as the injured Luka Modric misses out. Manchester United welcome back Rio Ferdinand from injury - his first league start of the season - and there are also places for Paul Scholes, Anderson and ex-Spurs striker Dimitar Berbatov.

Chelsea goal: You kinda sensed that was coming, right? Quick thinking from Michael Essien and Nicolas Anelka sets up Florent Malouda, who smashes in the shot off the keeper. Clenched fists from Carlo Ancellotti, who looks like he will keep up his 100% league record.

1659: GOAL Stoke 1-2 Chelsea

1657: FULL-TIME Wigan 1-0 West Ham

1655: Five minutes of added time at the Britannia, where it's still 1-1 between Stoke and Chelsea. Visitors piling on the pressure.

1654: FULL-TIME Sunderland 4-1 Hull

1654: FULL-TIME Man City 4-2 Arsenal

1654: FULL-TIME Portsmouth 2-3 Bolton

1653: Robin van Persie has hit the post, and Shay Given has just made a great reaction save at his near post from a deflected shot. In injury time at Eastlands.

1652: FULL-TIME Liverpool 4-0 Burnley

1651: FULL-TIME Blackburn 3-1 Wolves

Bolton goal: David James is fuming, as well he might be as the Pompey defence fail to deal with a long throw. Bolton win three headers in the area, the last from Gary Cahill, who nods in from close range to put Bolton within touching distance of their first away win in 11.

Arsenal goal: Hope for Arsenal? Cesc Fabregas feeds the on-rushing Tomas Rosicky, who is completely unmarked as he slots past Shay Given.

BBC Sport's Phil McNulty at Eastlands: "Eastlands is in a state of complete pandemonium. Not just because City are now 4-2 up - but because of the irresponsibility of Emmanuel Adebayor's celebration, running the length of the pitch to taunt Arsenal's fans after heading the crucial third goal. Police were forced to restore order in the section containing Arsenal's fans and sadly this will focus headlines away from a day when City may have announced their arrival as a serious force."

1648: GOAL Portsmouth 2-3 Bolton

1647: GOAL Man City 4-2 Arsenal

Wolves goal: A consolation for Wolves from the corner, debutant Stefan Maierhofer smashing a shot into the roof of the net.

1645: GOAL Blackburn 3-1 Wolves

Man City goal: Lovely goal on the counter-attack, Craig Bellamy feeding Shaun Wright-Phillips, who clips it over for Manuel Almunia. Three goals in 10 minutes and this is a real statement from City.

1643: GOAL Man City 4-1 Arsenal

Liverpool goal: Yossi Benayoun gets his hat-trick. The ball bounces kindly off referee Lee Mason before Andriy Voronin plays in Benayoun to tap in from close range.

Man City goal: Well, that's a fine header from Emmanuel Adebayor - but he could be in all sorts of hot water for the celebration. The former Gunner sprints the length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the visiting fans. He gets a yellow card - but it may get worse. Foolish, to say the least.

1640: GOAL Liverpool 4-0 Burnley

1640: GOAL Man City 3-1 Arsenal

1639: Shaun Wright-Phillips misses a great chance to wrap up victory for Manchester City.

Sunderland goal: Corner from the right and who else but Michael Turner, making his debut for the Black Cats after his switch from Hull, heads in via a deflection off Kamil Zayatte. It goes down as an own goal.

1635: GOAL Sunderland 4-1 Hull

Man City goal: Micah Richards squares for Craig Bellamy to sweep in a lovely goal for City. About 15 minutes remaining.

1633: GOAL Man City 2-1 Arsenal

1630: Chelsea, still level at 1-1 with Stoke, bring Michael Essien on for Michael Ballack. Tuncay comes on for his Stoke debut.

BBC Sport's Phil McNulty at Eastlands: "Eastlands nerves were already starting to jangle - and Robin van Persie has made matters considerably worse. Manchester City have been forced back after the break and have been unable to keep possession, which is fatal against Arsenal."

Sunderland goal: Kamil Zayatte plays Darren Bent onside and the in-form striker is allowed all the room in the world to run in and weigh up his shot past Boaz Myhill.

Portsmouth goal: A half-clearance from Zat Knight causes confusion in the Bolton area, with a further deflection seeing the ball fall perfectly for debutant Kevin-Prince Boateng, who smashes home.

1626: GOAL Sunderland 3-1 Hull

Arsenal goal: Tomas Rosicky feeds Robin van Persie, who does brilliantly to turn Joleon Lescott on the edge of the area before firing a low shot past Shay Given into the bottom corner of the net. A brilliant strike, and the first goal Man City have conceded this season.

Blackburn goal: Jason Roberts picks up Morten Gamst Pedersen's through-ball and bulldozes his way through. His shot comes off the keeper but David Dunn rams home the rebound. Roberts has been credited with Blackburn's second goal - which he did get a touch on as Givet's effort headed towards goal.

1622: GOAL Portsmouth 2-2 Bolton

1621: GOAL Blackburn 3-0 Wolves

Liverpool goal: Steven Gerrard shrugs off a challenge on the right and squares it beautifully for Yossi Benayoun to slot in.

1619: GOAL Liverpool 3-0 Burnley

1618: Arsenal have gone up a gear at Eastlands and are looking increasingly dangerous. William Gallas has just brought a fine instinctive save from Shay Given with a low header after he was first to a corner at the near post.

Wigan goal: Mario Melchiot's cross from the right wing finds Jason Koumas at the far post, his shot is blocked by Robert Green, but only as far as Hugo Rodallega who pokes home from close range. Maybe that goal will finally kick the game into life as it's been pretty toothless stuff by both sides thus far.

1616: GOAL Wigan 1-0 West Ham

Blackburn goal: David Dunn's corner is met by defender Gael Givet, whose far-post header is touched in by Jason Roberts to put Rovers within reach of their first win of the Prem season.

1614: GOAL Blackburn 2-0 Wolves

1611: Well, well. Who on earth is this coming on for Arsenal? It's Tomas Rosicky, making his first competitive appearance for the Gunners since January last year. Denilson makes way.

Sunderland goal: Phil Bardsley's cross from the right finds its way to Andy Reid, who drills the left-footed finish past Hull keeper Boaz Myhill.

1609: GOAL Sunderland 2-1 Hull

1608: All Prem games back under way - except Stoke-Chelsea... and there's a goal already.

1604: Anyway, some League One chat should cheer us all up. Charlton's hopes of a seventh-straight league win are in the balance with rock-bottom Southampton, managed by ex-Addicks boss Alan Pardew, 1-0 up at The Valley at the break through Adam Lallana's goal. Two of the other high-flyers, Huddersfield and Bristol Rovers, are being held 0-0 at home by Brentford and Oldham while another in-form team, Swindon, are drawing 1-1 with Colchester after Temitope Obadeyi equalised for the Robins in first-half injury-time.

1603: Hello everyone. I understand your frustrations over the technical problems we are experiencing better than anyone. And as I have said before, if it makes you feel better to abuse me, then please fill your boots. All I can tell you is someone, somewhere is working on it. I, however, have no control over servers and clever stuff like that.

Paul Fletcher tweeting from The Valley: "Saints' lead fully deserved at Charlton. Must please Alan Pardew, who has copped some stick on his return to The Valley."

1559: Plenty of goals about at the top of League Two, where Bournemouth are leading Lincoln City 2-1 thanks to goals from Brett Pitman and Sammy Igoe and look set to maintain their 100% record at Dean Court this season. Elsewhere, Dagenham & Redbridge are 1-0 up against Chesterfield thanks to Will Antwi's first goal for the club and Notts County have come back from a goal down against Northampton to lead 2-1 through Matt Ritchie and Lee Hughes. Barnet, who started the day in fourth place, fell behind against Macclesfield but levelled just before the break through Paul Morgan's own goal.

1556: While we recover from a goal-filled (except at the DW Stadium) first-half in the Prem, how about we have a look at the Champ, where the home teams fought back in the first-half. QPR, West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday all came from a goal behind to level - the Baggies even going one better as they went 2-1 up over Plymouth. Thus far, they are the only team to have bagged twice in a quiet second tier.

1554: HALF-TIME Stoke 1-1 Chelsea

1553: No, Portsmouth did not score Bolton's penalty for them. A manual refresh should erase that howler from your computer screens. They're still going at Stoke, where injuries to Didier Drogba, Thomas Sorensen, Ashley Cole and John Terry have all had treatment during an eventful first half.

BBC Sport's Phil McNulty at Eastlands: "Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been in the ear of the fourth official on a regular basis - but he would be better served directing his frustrations at his team during the interval. Arsenal have faded after a bright start and Manchester City were sharper all-round after taking the lead, making the Gunners look lightweight. Eastlands elated."

Chelsea goal: Into the third of eight minutes of added time at Stoke, and Chelsea are level. Frank Lampard threads a lovely pass through for Didier Drogba, who smashes the ball into the top corner. An emphatic finish, if ever there was one.

1547: HALF-TIME Portsmouth 1-2 Bolton

Hull goal: An inswinging corner is met at the near post by Kamil Zayatte, whose header goes in off the post.

1545: GOAL Sunderland 1-1 Hull

Bolton goal: Nadir Belhadj gives the ball away and Tal ben Haim dives in on Kevin Davies in his desperation to get it back. He appears to get a touch on the ball - but referee Chris Foy points to the spot. Matt Taylor tucks away the penalty.

Liverpool goal: Liverpool catch Burnley out on the counter attack to go two up. Clarets keeper Brian Jensen can only parry a Yossi Benayoun shot and Dirk Kuyt pounces on the loose ball to slot in.

1539: PENALTY TO BOLTON

BBC Sport's Phil McNulty at Eastlands: "Manchester City have taken real heart from a goal that came against the run on play. There is purpose about their approach now and Eastlands is buzzing with optimism. For all the talk of this game being a test for Manchester City, it is also an examination for Arsenal. Arsene Wenger looks suitably unimpressed as he stands in his technical area."

Stoke goal: Glenn Whelan crosses from the right and Petr Cech is caught in no-man's land, and watches as Aboudalaye Faye's header loops over him. Awful goal from Chelsea's point of view.

1532: GOAL Stoke 1-0 Chelsea

1530: Good save by Wigan keeper Chris Kirkland to turn the ball behind for a West Ham corner, after Junior Stanislas shot through a crowd of players from the edge of the box.

Liverpool goal: Yossi Benayoun runs on to a Glen Johnson pass, cuts inside Graham Alexander and sidefoots past Brian Jensen, who might have done better.

Portsmouth goal: It is a goalfest between the two Prem strugglers. Debutant Jamie O'Hara takes the corner and Younes Kaboul rises above the Bolton defence to head in - despite the presence of a man on the line. Kaboul has scored 100% of Pompey's Premier League goals this season - two.

1525: GOAL Portsmouth 1-1 Bolton

Man City goal: Arsenal have had most of the ball so far at Eastlands but it is Manchester City who take the lead, in bizarre circumstances. Micah Richards does brilliantly to meet Gareth Barry's free-kick with a looping header and the ball comes back off the post, hits the diving Manuel Almunia and spins over the line for an embarrassing own goal.

Blackburn goal: Michael Mancienne comes across to clear but his sliding challenge ricochets off El-Hadji Diouf, who is left with a clear run on goal. Keeper Wayne Hennessy gets a touch on the shot but not enough to stop Rovers taking the lead.

1519: GOAL Man City 1-0 Arsenal

1519: GOAL Blackburn 1-0 Wolves

1518: Amid that flurry of, er, two goals, West Ham had a strong penalty shout against Wigan, Zavon Hines bundled over on the edge of the box by Maynor Figueroa. Scrappy first few minutes at Eastlands but Arsenal have just had a great chance to open the scoring. Nicklas Bendtner sent over a corner from the right and William Gallas, unmarked at the back post, should find the target. Instead, he heads over. Chance gone.

Sunderland goal: From the corner, Craig Fagan improbably decides to punch the ball clear. Ridiculous. Darren Bent dispatches the penalty for his third Sunderland goal.

Bolton goal: Long ball from the back is flicked on by Kevin Davies and Gretar Steinsson slips it through to Tamir Cohen, who smashes it past David James with his left foot.

1510: Nasty injury for Beattie it looks like. Matt Taylor misses a golden chance for Bolton to take the lead at Portsmouth, skewing his shot off his right foot, which to be fair he does only normally use for standing on.

1509: Emmanuel Adebayor muscles his way into the box, but is eventually crowded out by the Arsenal defence. At Stoke, Branislav Ivanovic somehow manages to chest the ball into the path of James Beattie, who volleys wide - but in doing so, twists his foot badly and he won't be able to continue. Ricardo Fuller on.

1507: Christophe Berra blasts wide on his Premier League debut for Wolves when he really should have done better, after Blackburn keeper Paul Robinson drops a free-kick.

1456: Full time at Pride Park and Sheffield United go up to second in the Championship - for now - as Matthew Kilgallon's 80th-minute goal earns them a 1-0 win over Derby.

Meanwhile, early movement from the Championship to speak of - Kevin Blackwell's Sheffield United look like going level on points with Newcastle at the top as Matthew Kilgallon scores with 10 minutes to go to put them 1-0 up at Nigel Clough's Derby.

El Hadji Diouf returns for Blackburn as Sam Allardyce attempts to mastermind the Lancastrians' first Premier League win of the season. In the only change to the side that drew with West Ham last time out, Diouf will slot into a five-man midfield in place of injured France youth international Steven N'Zonzi. For Wolves, Scotland international Christophe Berra deputises for injured skipper Jody Craddock, while Matthew Hill replaces George Elokobi, who drops to the bench.

1445: TEAM NEWS Sunderland v Hull
Defender Michael Turner makes his Sunderland debut against the club he left last month and Fraizer Campbell also starts up front against his former side. Midfielder Kieran Richardson moves to left-back to replace the injured George McCartney so Andy Reid plays on the left wing and keeper Craig Gordon is fit after a thigh injury. Hull also make three changes from their last outing. Boss Phil Brown opts to use Craig Fagan up front, meaning new signing Jan Venegoor of Hesselink has to settle for a place on the bench, while both Ibrahima Sonko and Paul McShane start in defence.

1443: Emmanuel Adebayor crosses the centre line and gives Emmanuel Eboue a hug before playfully squirting his former team-mate with his water bottle. Ah, lovely stuff.

1441: TEAM NEWS Man City v Arsenal
Manchester City make one change from the side that beat Portsmouth on 30 August, with Nigel de Jong replacing the injured Carlos Tevez to make his first start of the season. Robinho, who was on the bench against Pompey, is unavailable after picking up a knock playing for Brazil. Cesc Fabregas and Nicklas Bendtner return for Arsenal following their defeat by Manchester United a fortnight ago, in place of Emmanuel Eboue and Andrey Arshavin, while the Gunners have Tomas Rosicky on the bench after he played his first competitive match for 20 months in midweek, helping the Czech Republic beat San Marino.

David James returns from a knee injury for Portsmouth, who also hand debuts to new signings Tal Ben-Haim, Jamie O'Hara and Kevin Prince-Boateng. Further transfer-window buys Mike Williamson, Danny Webber and Hassan Yebda are all named on the bench. Bolton boss Gary Megson names Croatia forward Ivan Klasnic on the bench after his move from Nantes.

BBC Sport's Phil McNulty at Eastlands: "Emmanuel Adebayor has just emerged to warm up to a predictably mixed reception at Eastlands. Cheers from the Manchester City fans - something unrepeatable from their Arsenal counterparts. This is a game that is being seen as the first serious test of City's credentials as potential top four contenders."

Stoke switch to a 5-3-2 formation and make four changes from the side which beat Sunderland - Robert Huth making a full debut against his former club, James Beattie returning from injury and Dean Whitehead and Danny Collins also coming in. There are also four changes for Chelsea, who replace Ricardo Carvalho, Michael Essien, Deco and Nicolas Anelka with Branislav Ivanovic, Jon Mikel Obi, Florent Malouda and Salomon Kalou.

Liverpool's combative midfielder Javier Mascherano is not in the squad and is replaced in the starting line-up by Yossi Benayoun. Steven Gerrard is set to drop back into midfield to partner Lucas Leiva with either Benanyoun or Kuyt playing the foil to striker Fernando Torres. Elshewhere, Martin Skrtel comes back into the central defence at the expense of Sotirios Kyrgiakos. Burnley manager Owen Coyle sticks with the same side which were beaten by Chelsea last time out. That means their new loan signing, Liverpool-born striker David Nugent, is on the bench.

1406: There may be no early game in the Prem, but of course I haven't forgotten that other leagues exist. In the Championship, Derby and Sheffield United haven't bothered to score a goal yet. In League One, Gillingham lead Millwall 2-0 while in the SPL, Motherwell are about to hold Rangers to a draw.

1403: Steven Gerrard's Liverpool meet Burnley, who won their last meeting thanks to Djimi Traore's now legendary own goal in the 2004/5 FA Cup. Reds keeper Pepe Reina tells the Guardian this morning: "Maybe it's time to get realistic and not think about the title but just about winning the next game." Sounds sensible, no?

Carlo Ancelotti appears with John Terry, Petr Cech and Frank Lampard as the Beatles (because Ancelotti said he likes the Beatles), while Darren Bent's face is superimposed onto a bird (because he said on Twitter that he didn't want to join Hull, who Sunderland face today). Brilliant!

1346: In other Manchester City news, the Times reports today that the moneybags club could eventually pay a mind-boggling £47m for Carlos Tevez, which, if true, would make him the fifth most expensive footballer on the planet. I don't even know where to start with that. Actually, I do: he's just not that good, is he? Is he?!

1339: Today also sees Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure up against their old club as Manchester City test their top-four credentials against Arsenal. "Adebayor has started the season on fire and we have to put that fire out," says Gunners boss Arsene Wenger. Adebayor, meanwhile, is still in a right mood with his old club. "Arsenal have a lot of fans who are not fans," says the striker. "Arsenal have fans from America and Jamaica. Today they are Arsenal fans, tomorrow they will be Liverpool fans, after tomorrow they will be Manchester United fans. If you boo your player every weekend, I am very sorry, you are not true fans."

1334: Yes it's back. The Premier League returns for the first time since the transfer window shut following a flurry of completely underwhelming activity. Still, watch out for club debuts today for Ivan Klasnic (Bolton), Danny Collins (Stoke) and, erm, Mike Williamson, Danny Webber, Jamie O'Hara etc (Portsmouth).
