Pele backs Beckenbauer for Uefa

Beckenbauer will stand for the presidency of Uefa in 2007

Pele believes Franz Beckenbauer is better equipped than Michel Platini to take over as president of Uefa when Lennart Johansson stands down in 2007.

Platini, vice-president of the French Football Federation, was the sole candidate at the end of March until Beckenbauer said he would also stand.

And Pele's backing of the German is a further blow to the French legend.

Pele told Germany's Welt am Sonntag newspaper: "Franz always gets what he wants. He would be the right man."
