England injury crisis deepens
Trescothick's place at the top of the order is crucial
Opening batsman Marcus Trescothick was forced to leave the field on the second day of the two-day match against Western Australia with a shoulder injury.
The team management said he would need a pain-killing injection before the end of the day. "The injury does not affect his batting, only his fielding," a spokesman for the England team said. "The injury had been troubling Trescothick for a while." He insisted the Somerset left-hander would be fit for the three-day match starting in Perth on Monday. Vaughan, Flintoff, Gough out Trescothick's opening partner, Michael Vaughan, sidelined with a knee injury, is a definite non-starter for Monday's game. All-rounder Andrew Flintoff and fast bowler Darren Gough are also out of action. Flintoff has flown to Adelaide for intensive treatment aimed at helping him to recover from a hernia operation. Gough is still undergoing rehabilitation after severe knee surgery, and is thought likely to miss the opening Test in Brisbane on 7 November. Fast bowler Simon Jones is also far from 100% with a side injury. |
