S Africa make Prince vice-captain
Ashwell Prince
Prince hit a century in the third Test against Australia in January
The day when South Africa's cricket side will be led by a black player has come a step closer after Ashwell Prince was named as the team's vice-captain.

Prince takes the role on the tour of Australia after all-rounder Jacques Kallis returned home because of injury.

"He is well established and respected as a senior member of the squad," chief selector Haroon Lorgat said of Prince, who made his Test debut in 2002.

The 28-year-old left-handed batsman has already skippered South Africa A.

Prince, who has represented South Africa at all levels from Under-13 upwards, was chosen ahead of the more experienced former captain Shaun Pollock, wicket-keeper Mark Boucher and batsman Herschelle Gibbs.

"He is fully conversant with the ethos of South African cricket," Lorgat added.
