Smith laments absence of spinner
Graeme Smith
Smith is looking on the optimistic side ahead of England's tour
South Africa skipper Graeme Smith admitted missing an experienced spinner after defeat in the second Test against India cost his side the series.

Nicky Boje pulled out of the tour because of a match-fixing probe.

"The results could have been different if we'd had an experienced slow bowler," said Smith.

"We should have scored in excess of 400, but we did not make the most of winning the toss by getting a big score and it proved crucial."

But Smith tried to look on the positive side of things after the eight-wicket defeat.

"We have had some gains from the tour like Andrew Hall and great performances like that from Jacques Kallis and we will surely do better in future," he said.

"A lot of the guys have gained experience on this tour and unfortunately, we have not got the results we would have liked.

"But we go home now for a Test series against England and hopefully, playing in our own conditions, we can perform better."
