Amla, having battled through a testing spell as England found swing and seam, also passes fifty in an unbroken stand of 124 as the hosts set themselves up for a significant first-innings lead

Sidebottom, who thought he had Smith out for 15, finally removes South Africa's skipper for 105 but the hosts are in control with the score on 201-2
A spectacular thunderstorm falls halfway through the second session and play is halted, perhaps for the whole day, with South Africa on 207-2
Although it seemed improbable a few hours before, hard work by the ground staff and the re-emergence of the sun rescues the situation and another 23 balls are able to be be bowled
But England can not forge any breakthrough after the break as Jacques Kallis gets his eye in before the umpires call a halt to proceeding because of bad light
