Blackwell gets England call
Ian Blackwell has a reputation as a big hitter
Ian Blackwell has a reputation as a big hitter
All-rounder Ian Blackwell has been called up to England's squad for September's ICC Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka.

Blackwell, who plays for Somerset in the showpiece domestic Cup final at Lord's on Saturday, will fly to Colombo with the rest of the squad on 12 September.

The 24-year-old averages more than 50 in the C&G Trophy competition and was named man of the match in Somerset's semi-final victory over Kent for a 53-ball innings of 86.

Chairman of selectors David Graveney said: "Ian has had a very good season for Somerset and shown that he can play match-winning innings in a positive manner.

Extra options

"This is now a good opportunity for him to show what he can do at a higher level. We also feel that his left arm spin bowling will give us extra options in a venue like Sri Lanka."

Blackwell is the second player to be called up as a replacement for the ICC Trophy after James Kirtley was drafted in to replace the injured Darren Gough earlier this month.

Born in Chesterfield, Blackwell has never played for England before and must also be in the frame for the deciding Test against India at the Oval.

He averaged more than 50 in first class cricket in 2001.

Revised ICC Champions Trophy squad:

N Hussain (Essex, capt), ME Trescothick (Somerset), NV Knight (Warwickshire), MP Vaughan (Yorkshire), PD Collingwood (Durham), AJ Stewart (Surrey, wkt), A Flintoff (Lancashire), RC Irani (Essex), AF Giles (Warwickshire), RJ Kirtley (Sussex), AR Caddick (Somerset), MJ Hoggard (Yorkshire), JN Snape (Gloucestershire), C White (Yorkshire).
