Weekes shows the way
Paul Weekes
Weekes galvanised the middle order with a fine knock
County Championship D2, Derby, day one of four: Middlesex 291-8 v Derbyshire

Neither side could establish any ascendancy on the first day of the crunch match between Middlesex and Derbyshire at Derby.

A win will guarantee promotion for leaders Middlesex, while Derbyshire's Division One aspirations will be done no harm if they triumph.

Paul Weekes struck 88 as the visitors compiled 291 for the loss of eight wickets.

Kevin Dean took two wickets, including the final two to fall as Middlesex lost their last four for 37 runs.

Middlesex found themselves in early trouble on 10 for two after they won the toss and elected to bat.

Ed Joyce then fell lbw to Dean for 21 to reduce his side to 72 for three.

But captain Sven Koenig and Weekes fought back, putting on 104 runs for the fourth wicket.

Koenig was trapped in front by Mohammad Ali for 72, and Weekes soon followed when in sight of his century, dismissed by Graeme Welch after hitting 15 fours.

Derbyshire then enjoyed the best of the closing exchanges, leaving the match delicately poised with three days to play.
