S Africa in pole postion
Third Test, Wellington, day two (close): New Zealand 297 all out v South Africa 237-3

South Africa's Herschelle Gibbs hits out against New Zealand
Gibbs looked in good touch before dragging one on from Cairns
A solid parternship between Jacques Rudolph and Martin van Jaarsveld ensured South Africa had the upper hand after the second day of the third Test.

South Africa began their innings well in response to New Zealand's 297 with Herschelle Gibbs making 77.

But Kiwi bowler Chris Martin struck twice in three balls as the tourists went from 103-0 to 141-3.

Rudolph (60) and Van Jaarsveld (48) thwarted New Zealand's bowlers as South Africa ended the day at 237-3.

Resuming at 248-6, New Zealand added nine runs before Shaun Pollock removed Chris Cairns (69) and Daniel Vettori (0) two balls later.

With only Michael Mason and Chris Martin for support, Jacob Oram lashed out with a quick 34 from 38 in balls before being stumped off Nicky Boje.

Boje finished with 4-65 while Pollock had figures of 3-85.

In reply, Gibbs and Graeme Smith enjoyed a century partnership before Smith dragged a wide Chris Cairns yorker onto his stumps.

Martin then had Gibbs caught for 77 and immediately afterwards claimed the scalp of Gary Kirsten - playing in his final Test - for one.

New Zealand lead the series 1-0 and a draw will be enough for them to clinch their first series win over South Africa.

New Zealand: Stephen Fleming (capt), Mark Richardson, Michael Papps, Scott Styris, Matthew Sinclair, Chris Cairns, Jacob Oram, Brendon McCullum, Daniel Vettori, Michael Mason, Chris Martin.

South Africa: Graeme Smith (capt), Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Rudolph, Jacques Kallis, Gary Kirsten, Martin van Jaarsveld, Mark Boucher, Shaun Pollock, Nicky Boje, Makhaya Ntini, Andre Nel.
