Lara cleared of match-fixing
Lara was under investigation for over a year
West Indies star Brian Lara has been cleared of match-fixing charges following a West Indies Cricket Board investigation.
A report by the bureau of criminal investigations of India in 2000 alleged Lara received money for under-performing in two one-day internationals during the Windies' tour to India in 1994. But Barbadian attorney-at-law Elliott Mottley investigated the charges and found no evidence in support of the allegations.
"Mr Mottley's investigation on behalf of the West Indies Cricket Board has indicated that the allegations made against Brian were unfounded and not supported by any evidence," said WICB president Wes Hall. "We now consider that this matter is hereby officially closed and wish to thank Mr Mottley for his investigation and his report," he added. "We wrote to Brian's lawyers informing them that the matter is officially closed and that the allegations made against him were unfounded." During the investigation, commissioned in April last year, Mottley conducted personal interviews with several people, including Lara, and submitted questions to several people in writing. He also visited the International Cricket Council's Anti-Corruption Unit for discussions with Lord Condon and his staff. |
