Britain win two more golds in European Championships

British canoeists take three European golds

Britain secured two more golds and a bronze on the final day of the European Championships in Trasona, Spain.

Ed McKeever won the men's K1 (single kayak) 200m, a new Olympic distance, in a new personal best of 35.5 seconds.

Liam Heath and Jon Schofield, who won recent World Cup events in Germany and Hungary, claimed a notable win in the men's K2 (double kayak).

Rachel Cawthorn, winner of the single kayak 1000m on Saturday, took bronze in the women's K1 (kayak single) 500m.

In the men's K1 (kayak single) 500m Tim Brabants, the Olympic champion and qualified doctor who took 18 months out following his triumph in Beijing to return to work at a Nottingham hospital, was narrowly nudged out of a medal.

Brabants, who was eighth on Saturday in the 1000m, finished 0.3 seconds behind third-placed Max Hoff of Germany.

In the women's K4 (kayak quadruple) Abigail Edmonds, Hayleigh Mason, Angela Hannah and Jenna Hawkey finished fifth, just two seconds down on the victorious German crew, and in the women's K2 (kayak double), Jess Walker and Louisa Sawers were ninth.

McKeever was delighted with his gold medal performance and said: "It was a good race, a really good start. It was hard after 150m, I could have done with the finish coming 50 metres earlier but I was able to hold on.

"It feels really great being European Champion. I came into the regatta feeling confident and I'm delighted with how it has turned out. I'll enjoy the day now and then go back to England to prepare for the World Championship which are taking place in six weeks in Poland and see if I can do as well out there."

It feels really, really great. The race went completely to plan."

The doubles champions were also in jubilant mood and Schofield said: "I've won a Senior European title in Wild Water Canoeing and it is great to add a Sprint title to the list."

Heath, who has has won three Gold medals in his first year of senior international competition, added: "To think this time last year, I was pulling pints! It has been an absolute roller coaster. I can't believe it."
