Holmes goes for double
Kelly Holmes
Holmes will attempt to win a medal in two events
Britain's Kelly Holmes has confirmed she will run both the 800m and 1500m at the Olympic Games.

Holmes, who won bronze in the 800m at Sydney 2000, has previously said the 1500m was her priority but will now attempt to win a medal in both.

The 34-year-old from Kent said: "I am ready to give 100% over both distances.

"Both events will be very competitive and I will be looking to do my very best in both."

Holmes made the decision after a training session on Tuesday evening.

"It has been a very tough decision because of the way the programme falls - the 1500m has always been a major goal for me," she said.

The Commonwealth champion over 1500m is the British record holder at both distances and these Olympics will be her third and last.

Holmes claimed bronze in Sydney four years ago, but has repeatedly stated that she feels the 1500m offers her best medal chance.

She doubled up at both Atlanta in 1996 and Sydney four years ago.

She finished fourth over 800m and 11th in the 1500m at Atlanta, before snatching bronze in the 800m at Sydney and seventh in the 1500m.

The first preliminary round of the Athens 1500m schedule will be held on Tuesday, with a 48-hour break before the semi-finals.

The final takes place on Saturday, 28 August.
