England centre Emily Scarratt has said new signings such as international star Ilona Maher will "push" on the profile of Rugby Union.

American Olympic bronze medallist Maher has signed for Bristol Bears for the rest of the Premiership Women's Rugby season.

The 28-year-old is the most followed Rugby Union player in the world on social media, with 4.5 million Instagram followers and 3.2 million on TikTok.

"Additions like Ilona Maher prove how good this PWR league is," said Scarratt, who plays for Loughborough Lightning.

Scarratt could face Maher when her side play the Bears on 1 February.

Since Maher signed up, the derby between Bristol and Gloucester has been moved to a larger stadium to cope with ticket demand.

"I think what we have seen most recently and not just in rugby, is people follow people," explained Scarratt.

"With the rush of social media they don't necessarily tune into a team or country.

"So I think she is going to do amazing things just by being here.

"She already has done by bringing people from all over the world to our league."

Maher is best known for playing sevens rugby and is returning to XVs after a three-year break.

The utility back, who can play at centre or on the wing, has signed a three-month deal from January.

Scarratt added: "I hope she has a really good experience and doesn't feel the weight on her shoulders too much."

The 34-year-old also praised the pathway for university students into women's rugby.

"Them and internationals are continuing to push the game on and the clubs within it are in a good place. Ilona will only help keep pushing that."
