Football triplets make historic debut for Guernsey

A set of triplets all made their debuts for Guernsey as the island side finished third in the Cherry Godfrey Cup.

Emilie, Hollie and Millie Jeffreys, who are 16, became the first triplets ever to play for the island.

Guernsey were beaten 3-1 by the Isle of Man in their semi-final on Friday before beating the Isle of Wight 5-1 in the third-place play-off a day later.

Millie set up Guernsey's first three goals in the third-place decider as team-mate Heidi Dawber scored a hat-trick to put Guernsey 3-0 up after 32 minutes.

Thea Broadhead's long-range effort pulled a goal back for the Isle of Wight shortly before half-time before Emilie Jeffreys set up her sister Millie to make it 4-1 with 18 minutes left.

Emilie rounded off the win with a stoppage-time strike as the sisters ended the game with a hand - or foot - in every Guernsey goal.

"Since I can't even remember I've looked forward to this opportunity and it's finally come," Emilie Jeffreys told BBC Radio Guernsey.

"It was a special moment for us, we've always wanted this opportunity and for all three of us to be on the pitch at the same time is special."

The sisters will shortly leave the island to join York City's academy programme where they will study for academic qualifications while also joining the pathway for the club's women's team.

"The big goal is to be a professional footballer," said Holly Jeffreys.

"Obviously going to York is a massive step towards that and hopefully that's going to help to progress our game even further.

"There's lots of people behind us that have helped - coaches and staff in the background that have massively helped us to improve as players - and we just hope to keep improving and get better every day."

Millie Jeffreys added: "I can't wait to get started.

"This is only the beginning, and what's to come should be really special and I can't wait."
