Captain Reece James has insisted Cole Palmer is "committed to Chelsea" but urged people to "stay patient" with him despite his impact against Napoli.

Palmer, 23, came on at half-time and produced two assists for striker Joao Pedro as Chelsea came from behind to win at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

The result meant the Blues qualified for the last 16 at the first attempt, avoiding the Champions League play-off round in February

Asked whether Palmer - who has been linked with a move to Manchester United - remains committed, James said: "Of course he's committed to Chelsea. He's a Chelsea player.

"Many players have speculation in transfer windows. It's normal. He's conducted himself really well. We're super happy with him."

Like James previously, Palmer has suffered recurring injuries that have disrupted his season.

The defender added: "He's been in a difficult period and had a few setbacks. It's been slow for him this season, but he showed what he can do in the 45 minutes he played.

"Everyone needs to stay patient with him. He's an amazing player. He's still super young and he's going to improve with time."

New manager Liam Rosenior now has five wins from six matches after replacing Enzo Maresca, who left following a falling-out with the club's hierarchy.

A mid-season change is normally disruptive, but both times Chelsea have won the Champions League came after replacing a manager in January.

James, a boyhood Chelsea fan, understands the history and was involved in the 2021 triumph under Thomas Tuchel.

"It's super early in the competition, but it was a special performance from a special group. The results spoke for themselves," he continued. "We're still getting to know him and the style of football he wants to play. But we're improving."
