"Squad management" will be key in this season's Premier League title race, says former Manchester City goalkeeper Scott Carson.

City have endured a miserable start to 2026, failing to win any of their four league matches so far and have slipped seven points behind leaders Arsenal.

Both the Gunners and Pep Guardiola's side have had to contend with numerous injuries this season, with City missing eight players during Tuesday's shock Champions League loss at Bodo/Glimt.

Carson said: "It’s a hugely competitive run-in so I think squad management comes into it, teams like City and Arsenal are competing on all fronts, in competitive games with midweek fixtures, weekend games.

"I think City have a strong squad, especially with the likes of Antoine Semenyo joining in January, so that’ll help us but ultimately I think the title will be won by the team that is able to maintain their competitive advantage whilst getting the most out of the players they have available.”

Carson has been spending "quality time" with his family since retiring in the summer and will travel as a City ambassador on the club's trip to China for their matchday live tour.

Though the side have been below standards in recent games, Carson is optimistic about the future.

The former England goalkeeper added: "There's been a lot of change in the squad, some experienced players leaving since we won the Treble, four-in-a-row, but we've also invested with some incredible young talents.

"With the depth and quality they have, whether that is experienced members of the squad or new signings, the team continue to perform at a high level."
