Munsey answers call at eleventh hour in Notts win

Notts Outlaws batsman George Munsey answered the call from his club at the eleventh hour to return from international duty and score a superb 138 in their six-wicket victory against Surrey, which secured their passage to the knockout stages of the One-Day Cup.

The 33-year-old represented Scotland against United Arab Emirates in a 40-over match in Dundee just two days earlier as they qualified for the ICC World Cup qualification stage from the World Cup League 2 phase.

Despite coming into Tuesday's match at The Oval off the back of two consecutive ducks for his country, Munsey crunched 11 fours and four sixes in a match-winning knock to help see the Outlaws home with 13 balls to spare.

It was another moment for the Outlaws to savour at Surrey following their 20-run victory last September, which helped bring the club their first County Championship title for 15 years.

"I wanted to get a hundred for Notts. I didn't think it was going to come in the 50-over [format], but I am really grateful for the opportunities, and I am really pleased to get over the line," Munsey told BBC Radio Nottingham.

"I feel like I'm batting really well, and I think that those last two innings I was a bit unlucky and I feel for the Scottish team.

"But I back my skills and am really enjoying my time with Notts - and it was an easy call to try and come down here and win a game of cricket."

Munsey has played 17 white ball matches for Notts in total so far this season, scoring five half-centuries before finally making his first ton for the club as they chased down a target of 299.

Coming to the crease with the Outlaws in bother at 58-2, Munsey formed a partnership with captain Haseeb Hameed worth 109 runs, and then a fourth-wicket stand with Kyle Verreynne of 119 runs in a perfectly-judged run chase.

After saying his goodbyes to his club colleagues twice already this season, Munsey is preparing to go again against Yorkshire at Clifton Park in the quarter-final stage on Friday.

He said: "I think I've played a club game down there a long, long time ago. [It is a] great club and we'll be looking forward to going back down there."

Notts' local rivals Leicestershire Foxes were not in action on the final day, having already wrapped up their eight group matches before the thrilling climax to the round robin, winning five matches and losing three with a net run rate of +0.517.

Twelve teams were still mathematically able to make it into the last six on the final day's play - and despite Lancashire putting on 443-6 in their 50 overs at Somerset, their highest ever list A score, they were unable to dismiss Somerset for less than 226, meaning the Foxes have finished top of Group A and go straight through to the semi-finals.

If Notts beat Yorkshire on Friday, they will face the Foxes in Sunday's semi-final derby showdown at Grace Road [11:00 BST].
