    What is it?

The World Athletics Cross Country Championships takes place every two years, in line with the Olympics, and consists of 5 different races: a men and women’s senior and under 20s race as well as a mixed relay.

Athletes competing can earn an individual medal by placing in the top three positions in the race, as well earning a team medal for the countries who finish collectively in the top three positions. For example, the Ethiopian team won silver in Belgrade last time out despite none of their runners placing in the top 3 in the individual rankings.
