Kelly into men’s singles semi-finals

Gary Kelly is in the semi-finals of the men’s singles without having to throw a bowl on Monday morning.

Unbeaten in five group games, the two-time Commonwealth Games medallist had his destiny in his own hands anyway and would have made the final four by taking a set off South African Wayne Rittmuller in his final game this afternoon.

However his closest rival, Shannon McIlroy from New Zealand, could only beat his opponent from Niue Island 1.5 sets to 0.5 when he had to win 2-0 meaning he can no longer catch Kelly.

In the semi-finals, Kelly will face Sam Tolchard from England in a repeat of the bronze medal play-off from 2010 in Delhi, a game Kelly won to secure the first of two Commonwealth medals.
