Despite a recent makeover The Washington is one of the few pubs
left in the city centre with an 'old fashioned' feel - it's divided
into two just like the battle cruisers in the good ol' days!
The
pub has been updated (cleaned up) after a period which saw it slip
into a world of darkness, but saying that it's always retained a
kind of underground feel to the place.
You
could imagine the people sat around you to be musicians, or young
cultural types or just down to earth people who like to have a good
session!
When
I visited I saw lots of pictures of South Yorkshire musoes on the
walls, some brilliant pictures!
They
were all taken by Chris Saunders of Sandman fame, and he must have
photographed scores of musicians/bands, definately worth a look.
They
also have regular DJ nights where they play odd mixes of music from
the 1960s to date, oh and the beer... well I had some lovely pints
of the original black stuff... not the cold! Mmm lovely!
If
you like a chilled daytime drink in pleasant surrounding or a lively
alternative atmosphere in the evenings this is a decent place to
be!

James, Sheffield This pub is a dump, i went in at the weekend and it was dead. It's smokey and smelly and is full of old farts listening to old music. Fantastic if you like 40 year old music and warm cloudy beer. A perfect example of how not to run a pub!21-6-05
Paul Hodgkins I beg the Greedy Cow to make a return to 'The Washy', and you'll be VERY suprised. An underused pub, re-vamped, and the crowd on a Friday and Saturday night should prove any doubters wrong about it's past.
Mr B and his staff must be praised for the way they present themselves in this now thriving pub. 31/05/05
The Watcher Back to it's best and now open all day. Really chuffed with what the new owners have done and I wish them all the best. Get yourselves in. But beware, it's a notownie/chav zone, thank god.
dave spent many a happy lunch time in this pub ,was favourite with telephone engineers still is with a few ,dave behind the bar always welcoming, was owned by a member of def lepord ,dont know if it still is ?
John J I have been in several times since the end of July and I have to say that I am very impressed with how quickly this pub seems to have been turned round. Five cask ales, loads of cool bottled lagers such as Nastro, Corona and Tiger and a more eclectic music policy have seen the Washy almost back to how it was 5 years ago. The Sunday Quiz returns too so get yourself down to a little piece of sunshine in a sea of wine bars. 10/10
Dry Riser Inlet Much much nicer. Only one beer, Lowenbrau, was off and Stella is an adequate replacement I'm sure! Abbeydale Moonshine, Greene King Abbot on. Old radios have been removed and the refurbishment is a little bit magnolia. But this was very necessary! The only way is up now for this pub
BBC South Yorkshire We have been informed that this pub is due to be takenover by a group who drank/drink here - they hope to restore the pub to its former glory.
Dotty D Shame to see a review like this about a unique Sheffield pub but don't give up on the place. It is about to be taken over by a group of loyal Washington regulars who want to restore it to its former glory so give it till the end of July then try another visit !
