Once in a while you find a bar of such staggering style it almost takes your breath away. Sola is such a place. A perfect marriage of old and new, sat underneath the cobbled streets of the Cathedral Quarter in a former print works, this is without doubt the coolest place in Sheffield.

Imbued with the best of Scandinavian design, where sixties retro meets oranges and browns underneath a glass ceiling to create an awesome space, you have to pinch yourself to believe that you're in the same city that could spawn the truly awful Berlin's.

The bar is stocked with bottled beers from Japan and Mexico, their cocktails are apparently legendary and when the Halifax complete my second mortgage I'll be sampling the delights of their impressive menu.

It isn't cheap you see, but then you wouldn't expect it to be. It's patently obvious that an awful lot of money and time has gone into this place for your enjoyment.

The next time some misinformed individual complains about the lack of high quality bars in Sheffield, accompany them down the stone staircase and watch the scales fall from their eyes.

Sola has set the benchmark for the way bars should be and is a perfect example of what can be created when Sheffielders put their minds to it.

Read it and weep, Leeds and Manchester.

What a cool place - at last some true culture in Sheffield. The art was brilliant and the bar was friendly. It was really good to be able to see high class art without the stuffiness of a gallery and to enjoy a good drink in a relaxed atmosphere - I will go again, and again.

I went to the launch of Solart last night. The food was v good, the wine was nicely chilled the atmosphere was vibrant and the art was fantastic. The only bad thing was that some of the art was not labelled and I didn't know how much they cost. The art that was priced was very cheap, especially for original art work from real artists. There was a speech made that opened the project and it was said that the arrangement with the bar meant that the cost of the art could be kept down. There is a promise of more shows to come and I look forward to it. A great night out.

Things are on the change at Sola. It has a new manager with new ideas. It is soon to launch a project called Solart which is basically where a group of artists are getting together to use the space as an exhibition area with art for sale but within a format of frequently changing shows. This launches on 12th August 2005.

SOLA is cool, you have to admit, its a bit lost and needs some help! the food menu is now catering for lunch times only, which is fine, and in the evening the place does what it does best, serving drinks and cocktails in a classy environment! lets face it, SOLA is the the only "different" place that Sheffield has to offer! and now its doing 2 4 £5 cocktails mo - fri, take that you chain bar competition!!!

Came to sheffield for the first time in a couple of year and its nice to see sola still on top form! A different world from the west street mayhem! 08/06/05

Stupendously unimpressed

Avoid for lunch - probably the worst I've ever had! The place was freezing and despite all the international beer pumps on display all but Budweiser was 'off'. We ordered from the waitress "sorry I'm not a waitress I'm the secretary" who subsequently returned several times to our table to say that first the venison was off (Lasagne substituted) then there were no bread buns (Lasagne substituted again). Then the wine farce. The list was abandoned due to lack of stock and the waiter "sorry, I'm not a waiter..." simply brought samples of his few bottles to the table for us to select. Wine glasses were sent back as dirty. Three choices of pasta were on the menu - tagliatelle, conchigliette, and quills. The first two were ordered, both came as quills - plus a bread bun that had been unavailable for the burger. The table behind subsequently got burgers with buns - so the chef had obviously managed to get to M&S and back by then. Fish & chips was atrocious - totally overcooked and bone dry together with cold, dry frozen chips and cold peas on a cold plate. Even the bill got the Basil Fawlty treatment - not one member of staff could generate a VAT receipt from the till. All in all an experience to remember - for all the wrong reasons. The staff clearly felt so bad about their inability to deliver that no-one dared asked whether we had enjoyed the meal.

Brilliant, cool, fun a great venue for the 'in crowd ' Great for upmarket private parties with delicious food and professional cocktails!! I hope Sola keeps up the standards and if the upmarket prices keep the orks of the town away - GOOD !!!

Bill
A huge uncomfortable echoing airport-lounge style space. Very bad and very expensive beer. Poseur clientele. One good thing - some of the cocktail staff seem to take a pride in what they do, if you like that sort of thing. A place to go if you put style above substance, and want to show off how much you can afford to spend on a night out.

Bar Sola is a breath of fresh air in Sheffield’s bar scene renaissance and discreetly located so that the lager louts have still to find it, not that they would appreciate it either but still. The cool surroundings complement the ambiance, music, bar and food menu's and the glamorous crowd, and table service worth the extra money alone. If you're looking for a bit of style and sophisticated Sheffield nightlife look no further. And if you're Ian Royston stick to burping and swearing in your local.

What a load of ponced up overpriced tat! Walking down the stairs into this place is like entering an Ikea catalogue. Except there's more smarmy, overpaid businessmen in Sola. You can't get a decent pint (try finding anything remotely English) and you get way overcharged for the privilege. The only saving grace is that they do a nice plate of chips. Just for fun, try standing next to the bar burping and swearing like you do in your local, and see what reaction you get!!!
