The
Royal Standard (or "Bog Standard" as it's been called
in the past) is a strange beast indeed.
Situated
within a stone's throw of both Brammall Lane and the Leadmill nightclub,
the place can seem sometimes to be a grassroots local or a pre-gig
drinking haunt by turns.
Despite
the fact that the decor is themed to sell the place as a flat-cap
and whippet pub, it's location and the relatively new building tends
to undermine this a bit.
This
said there is nothing wrong with the 'Standard as far as pubs go
as the staff are friendly and attentive and the beers are average
in price as well.
You
might really want to consider this palce as an alternative to the
somewhat more pretentious and overpriced bars in the cultural industries
quater if you're looking for a pre-club drink.
But
avoid like the plague if the resident DJ is working as he tends
to destroy conversation and your respiratory system with his trusty
speakers and smoke-machine.

Will The standard is great, you need to go back for another look. With a royalty card you make some savings and with free darts and regular quiz nights you can't go wrong. It's a hotspot for students and when the football is showed, it gets packed.
Nick Hayne That Richard....Welsh nuttcase ;). Yeh the Standards been revamped and is now a pre-club student mecca while retaining its good beers and food during the day. I walk an extra 5 minutes out of my way a day to enjoy a pint here!
Richard You need to go and review again! original review spot on but now Standard is completely revamped and actually looks nice!!
