Greedy Cow: Beer behind the bar!
A gem of a pub, hidden away from the main city stretch, with great beer. Really great beer.

Traditional is the word here. No jukebox, just conversation. No clones in uniform behind the bar. No gimmicks, just a good old Yorkshire pub with subtle and welcoming decor.

And then there's the beer.

I've never been inside another pub that had more original ales and even stocked a nice line in old style fruit wines and even mead! You won't find gassy lager at the forefront of what's on offer here.

And thanks to the fact that the ales are brewed on a small scale is reflected in the prices that can be as low as £1.50 a pint (you may call me a liar, but go see for yourself).

If you can brave the outskirts of the red-light district where the pub is located then you'll certainly be rewarded for your courage.

The "Cat" is the best pub in South Yorkshire, so far any way (i have tried plenty in the last 30 years) I think the review covers everything perfectly. Just one word to Sarah (moving tables) If I came to your house as a guest I would think it rude to move your furniture without asking you, so instead of complaining about some deserved sarcasm, go back, enjoy the experience, be polite and ask next time or better still go upstairs and use the larger tables. Remember a pub is someone else's home.

Nigel
Excellent and best in Sheffield. The beer is fantastic. There is nothing wrong with the the staff.

Guy
I agree with most people, great beer ,proper pub BUT staff can be ignorant and rude

Sarah
We'd heard about this pub by reputation and my friends and I all like good beer and food, so a group of us went for lunch yesterday. The food was great, beer excellent, and it was fantastic value for money in very pleasant surroundings. However, none of this made up for the fact that the man behind the bar (I don't know if it was the owner or another member of staff) was INCREDIBLY rude to us. This largely seemed to come from the fact that as there was 7 of us, we moved one table about a foot to the left to join it with the next table along so we could all sit together. As far as we could tell this didn't get in anyone's way, and if staff had asked us to move it back we would have done, but on two occasions we quite clearly heard the man behind the bar making comments to other staff and customers about us, saying things like "if I'd wanted the tables to be together I'd have put them like that" and making quite insulting personal comments about us. If we'd been causing any trouble then fair enough but all we were doing was sitting eating our food and chatting! So yeah - good food & beer, nice surroundings, but we certainly won't be going back there if that's how unwelcome we'll be made to feel.

Ewww, who dared write about preferring Stella in 'a pub with atmosphere'?! The Fat Cat has pure classical atmosphere - its a real pub, not a scally binge-center. Top notch beer and good grub, I like the intimate atmosphere and chirpy clientel!

Dave
One or two new bar staff recently , It would be Nice if they looked at you when they serve you ,may be a smile now and agian ! Dont make this your last call as staff tend to dog you for for your beer .As it seems they cant wait to go home . Vaughan's right what happened to customer service ?

Vaughan
I've never known the beer quality or range to be less than very good. But does this have to be at the expense of common courtesy? The staff here, like in some other 'Valley of Beer' pubs, are indifferent to unfamiliar faces or 'speculative' drinkers, preferring to kow-tow to the considerable pack of unwashed, braying beer tickers which haunt the place. This is hardly good business sense as most of this mob are happy to spend ages watching their single half warm up - or, more off-puttingly, siphoning beer off into a grubby collection of plastic bottles. I suggest that Mr Wickett puts his staff through compulsory NVQs in customer service.

fair review good ale and food but the staff can be a bit miserable

Dave
Although I tend to agree with most of the other comments, I do feel that some of the longer serving bar staff give one the impression that their job is a boring chore and would rather be elsewhere, instead of showing some enthusiasm for the product.

It's a proper pub with proper beer. It's in a rough area but that doesn't mean the drinkers are rough. Enclosed beer garden is a real surprise too.

Great pub, friendly and welcoming staff and fantastic variety of beers! We're in New Zealand at the moment and looking forward to getting home. We miss this pub!

£1.50 may sound reasonable for a pint but when it comes warm, flat and as the aroma of a students gym kit, i think not. I'll stick to paying £2.50 for a stella in a pub with a atmosphere

Now let me see this pub caters for, beard wearers, college lecturers, vegetarians, CAMRA members & farmers, what better reasons can there be to avoid the place. I have been and agree with Michael above, it is also cramped and means you end up next to some sweaty mature student who aint had a wash for a month, but if thats your scene its great!

Alan Moffatt
Not only great beer and welcoming atmosphere, but non-smokers are properly catered for.

lee harvey
I agree with all the above but surprised noone has mentioned the good value food and excellent vegentarian options (for a pub). The beer is the best thing about the FC, though.

Hugh
Like Linda, I am a CAMRA member and a University Lecturer I agree with all of the comments. Couldn't be better!

Michael J Hodgson
Like the adjacent Kelham Island Tavern, it is a good pub, often spoiled by scruffy ill mannered CAMRA members.

The Fat Cat is what all pubs should aspire to. No trendy punters, no lairy and abusive bouncers on the door and a great selection of domestic and foreign ales. Well worth shelling out the 85p on the tram.

Sue
We've been in Canada for four years but we still miss the Fat Cat! It's obviously as good as ever. Friends of ours visited the UK this summer and we sent them to the Fat Cat as a must-go-to pub!

Linda writes:
I think your readers might like to know that it has won Sheffield & District CAMRA's Pub of the Year 2003 Award.
[Thanks for letting us know, Linda. Well done, Fat Cat! - GC]
