Situated
at the top end of Ecclesall Road, well away from the ‘Golden Mile’,
the Banner nevertheless enjoys a pretty brisk trade.
Split
into three parts - lounge, snug, and games room upstairs - there
is plenty on offer to satisfy the discerning pub goer.
Live
football matches are shown upstairs and in the snug, leaving the
lounge as a sacred retreat for those who can’t bear to watch yet
another World Cup failure by England.
The
food is simple but wholesome, and regular quiz nights will give
the anoraks among you plenty of opportunity to satisfy your ‘need’
(never understood the thrill of knowing who make up the first century
martyrs but there you go).
Throw
in a beer garden for those - all too rare - summer sizzlers, and
you’ve got a pretty attractive hostelry in a top part of town.
Glugfest I went in to this pub for the first time last week having previously passed it many times. The place is pleasant enough and has a surprisingly large beer garden hidden away at the back, but please folks turn down the lighting in the lounge - it's like having a pint in an operating theatre!!
Eric Not my idea of a good pub at all. The lounge and upstairs areas are packed with art students and the snug had a bizzare mix of hard-drinking locals and equally hard-drinking art students. A few of the bar staff looked as if they'd rather be somewhere else. The decor was poor, the interior lighting blinding and the gents lavatory was rather smelly. I won't be coming back here again.
John They've won an award recently for being welcoming and helpfull to blind people. I think this sums up the staff of this great pub.
James A fair review. It can get kinda crowded on football days, get there early if you want a seat. It's a shame they rarely open the upstairs bar, means going downstairs for another pint.
Dry Riser Inlet Refreshing local in a strangely underpubbed part of Sheffield
Jeff This review is sooo wrong. I have been to this place several times and found it a real dive. Smokey, noisy and quite unfriendly.
Mat Here, here. Very nice trad Sheffield pub with a good mixed crowd. Town and gown both seem welcome and the jukebox is packed with pumpin choons. Never let the incursion of glass and chrome take the beloved pubs of this area.
Jenny I have been to this pub on more than one occasion and find it a lovely pub... Along with it's lovely landlords Janet and Roger.
