Tucked
away in its own little yard, the Heavygate is not a pretty sight
from the outside and the concrete motif that seems to dominate the
place does little to help matters.
But
it's when you actually get inside that the paradox that is the Heavygate
really gets into full swing.
Divided
into a pool room and a darts room, the pub boasts decor that would
put the Phoenix WMC to shame and it's quite shabby decor at that.
But
then there's the fact that the prices are low, the Landlord and
his partner are nice and friendly and I can't remember the last
time that I put money down for a game of pool and had the couple
playing offer a friendly game of mixed doubles (they won, by the
way...watch out for Walkley pool-hustlers).
If
you can find the place tucked away on the hillside and you can appreciate
its rough charms then this is a pub for you.

Richard having been out of Sheffield for 6 years, decided to visit Walkley again, & called in my old haunt The Heavy. Was very surprised by the change in decor & management (the old decor had been there since time immemorial) The natives & management were as friendly as ever, & I was surprised to find the general knowledge quiz still running on Tues nights. (Is this Sheffields oldest pub quiz?) Wonderful atmosphere, good quiz, beers (as ever) exceellent. Good to see the place has moved on.
Mat The improvements continue apace at the Heavygate! The last time I was in there they had beers by the excellent Nottingham brewery Hardy's & Hanson, well worth a trip up the hill for a pint. 07/04/05
Andrew Myers New owners yet again (late 2004). Putting in the effort to make the 'Heavy' a friendly and lively pub - their work deserves success!
Ed Smith Yes yes yes! One of the finest pubs in Sheffield - nicely hidden away. Incredibly friendly place - couldn't recomend more.
Lloyd The refurbishment has much improved this pub. I like to watch Pheonix nights on the telly, but I didn't particularly enjoy drinking it. The improvements have made this place a good pub in a sea of mediocre establishments, keep it up guys.
Mat I was in there the other night and have to admit that the decor has improved, and the atmosphere was still as good as ever. Consider walking up to this place from Commonside or down to it from Crookes. You'll find a warm welcome and a good pint waiting for you.
Andrew Myers The Old Heavygate has undergone a major refurbishment this year and ther 'Phoenix Night' days are long gone. Beer still good, getting busier - well worth a visit (2003 Good Beer Guide entry)
