Situated
just opposite the Closed Shop in Crookes this is truly a breath
of fresh air.
Although
when I say fresh air, what I mean is more akin to pipe smoke and
the aroma of groups of people putting the world to rights over a
pint and a packet of crisps.
At
some point before the Sabbath and some point after creating Man,
the Lord gave the world pubs. The Hallamshire is a drinker he/she
would have been proud of.
It's
wonderful, from the reassuring sight of sandwiches behind the bar
to the exceptional juke-box (Bruce Springsteen's Greatest Hits is
the definitive soundtrack to any good night out).
Don't
get me wrong. No place can be everything to everyone and sure enough
this is no trendy wine bar.
Instead
it aims at one purpose and hits the nail well and truly on the head.
It is the bench mark by which all 'locals' should be measured. Friendly
staff, a resident dog that patrols the bar from time to time and
an enjoyably impossible Monday night quiz.
I thought
traditional pubs would be hard to come across in such a student
orientated area of Sheffield, but like great music, (Bruce Sprinsteen
anyone?) a great boozer can exist in any climate.

Sanjeev Patel It stands strong, head and shoulders above other pubs. Les is a man whom I greatly admire
Dave All ways been a good pub, my dad was a regular for years and years,Was a Wards pub, still miss the smell ,I think its still got a full size snooker table ,turn left at PA jewellery for a good night
Becks Spot on! My fave pub of all time.........
Andy P Excellent pub - something for everyone. A little off the beaten track but this is a good thing - people go to drink, not to have a quick half/reef/breezer and then move on. Conveniently close to the Cobden View as well - another excellent establishment. Take the time to visit and enjoy.
Jam Master Les is the man! As landlord's go, you could find none better. Full sized snooker table, pool table, and even pinball. It is indeed the benchmark by which others fall short. The monday night quiz is second to none, and is indeed all but impossible. I think you've just about summed it up, it could be that indeed the Lord did only decide that sunday should be the day of rest after he created the Hallamshire (which begs the question; why make it early closing?)
mickrick it is the hospitality of
mine host, les may that
makes it what it is
