Our party of three decided that it would be nice to have a change for Sunday lunch and so we headed off to 'Wok 1' in the former mining village of Edlington, just off junction 36 of the A1, near Doncaster.

This former pub converted into a 200 seater Cantonese Restaurant certainly didn't disappoint.

From the moment you enter, the aroma of Cantonese cuisine is complemented by the pleasingly simple but not tacky Chinese décor.

It's surprisingly spacious but clean and modern facilities including a fully licensed bar, offer a warm and inviting atmosphere.

We opted for the all day buffet (all you can eat for £7.00 per person), and following our crispy duck starter, we quickly moved to the self-service buffet with a 'cornucopia' of over 20 different steaming hot dishes of authentic Cantonese cooked food, to suit any and all tastes.

From large battered King Prawns to Lamb, Chicken, Pork, Duck and Spare Ribs, we feasted more than once on a mouth-watering array of choices, to the smiling and encouraging delight of the staff.

The food was delicious, hot and well presented. Moving to dessert was a huge sacrifice to the endless diets I have been on this year but the choice of three gateaux with real cream held no fear.

The service was quick, attentive and genuinely helpful, especially when we pointed out that one of our party was vegetarian.

Unfazed they arranged for a vegetarian option for him as starter and he was more than satiated with the main buffet.

The restaurant soon filled up and we observed that regulars were used to returning more than once for a dip in the trough.

'Wok 1' is a friendly and comfortable venue for a family meal or party and a reservation is recommended.

Leaving holding our stomachs, locals cast knowing smiles with the remarks, 'full then?'

Even the toilets were spotless (always a good sign!) The final bill for three was a little over £30.00 including drinks.

I look forward to returning.

Must have hit two bad nights!! Food poor and service slow. Coaxed by friends to return but regretted it. When newly opened went regularly for meals and take-aways and standards good, but will not be going back after recent experiences. Think health and hygiene are lax and leave alot to be desired.

I thought that the Wok 1 is the best restaurant i have been to! i have never tasted chinese food so nice! the staff were so helpful and got the food really quick! LIVE ON WOK 1!! 24/06/05

I thought the Wok 1 evening buffet, which cost £13 was a complete waste of money. All of the food was cold on the two nights I went with some friends. The staff coudnt keep up with the demand for the food so there was often nothing left to eat. 24/06/05

I thought the wok1 buffet was brilliant. All you could eat for £13 was a great offer as i must have ate half the chocolate cake to myself. The staff were good and everything was clean. It was a pleasure to go and would go again any day. 24/06/05

We are regular visitors to Wok 1 and are huge fans. The food is always hot and tasty, all buffet style. The kids are catered for, with Sausages and the like, if they are not into cantonese food. The service is first class, the waiters are efficient and friendly. If you eat between 4.30pm and 5.30pm (every evening except Saturday) its £4.95, and £2.50 for under 8's.. and you can't beat that for value, when you can eat as much as you like.. including huge gateux puddings, fresh fruit, jelly and ice-cream. My kids aged 10, 8 and 2 all love it. We have been alone, with kids, with big parties and with family and are NEVER disappointed.

If it can convert my 70 yr old Dad from 'meat and two veg' to trying something more adventurous (my parents even go without us now!) then there's no more to be said. 29/03/05

We were advised to go by one of my colleagues, so we trampled along to Edlington. Never looked back since! The friendliest most helpful staff ever, more so than any English Restaurant/Pub!!! Well done Wok 1!!

Four of us (2 couples) went on a Tuesday night. The eat as much as you want buffet must be one of the best values in the South Yorkshire area. There is a large selection to choose from and the service and staff are very pleasant. Would recommend it to any one who likes chinese cuisine. (9/10)

After reading the reviews (and not being put off by Vickys experience we decided to give it a go.The car park was almost full (a good sign),we were met and shown to our table by a waiter kind and helpful with a wonderful smile. We all decided to have the buffet and started off with the crispy duck and pancakes (very nice),we all then decided to make pigs of ourselves making several trips sampling all the dishes, all very well cooked-hot and tasty. The surroundings, fixtures and fittings are all very good, all the waiters were helpful. We travelled from Sheffield,Rotherham and Heckmondwyke and it was well worth it.Thanks to you all for a good evening Trevor

Mark (Barnsley)

Sharon
well we had to go back and all we can say it gets better every time and a big thank you to the staff for they are all really great with my teenage son and friend who like to sit 2gether and not with us and our friends lol

Vicky
Maybe i went on a bad day!! i was ill for days after my visit on Mothers day, so much so that it has put me off chinese food from any restaurant.

Tim Hodgetts, Antwerp in Belgium
I travelled to Edlington to visit family and despite the tradition of Sunday lunches, we went to Wok 1 for lunch. I have to say that coming over from Belgium, a country with a tradition and reputation for excellent food, it would be strange to say that a restaurant in Edlington excelled where some in Belgium didn't, but Wok 1 is an exception. We were the first people of the day to arrive. Typically, it had been raining, so we were a bit wet and bedraggled and the hospitality system sprang into action. The welcome was as warm as the restaurant and as genuine as the quality of the establishment. But that aside, the calm and friendly service disregarded, there is the food. We were presented with a wide choice of the best Chinese dishes I've had for a long time. All hot, fresh and abundant with the essential difference that if there was a particular dish that you liked, then you could have more. And more! My advice to anyone within driving distance of Edlington is to call Wok 1 and make a booking, because this is one of those undiscovered gems that will become so popular that reservations will offered by Camelot as alternate jackpot prizes for the lottery! Go and enjoy, enjoy and enjoy!

Sharon
Well what more can we say, went on a sunday nite and took 6 friends and what a nite we had food we really great and the selection was out of this world evan our 2 kids want to go back every nite so all we can say is we'll be back for more!!!! yummieeeeeeeeeee

Wok 1 definitely deserves a strong recommendation. The food is superb, the service spot on and there's a great atmoshphere. I don't think anyone will beat this restaurant for value for money either. It's great for large parties of people or intimate tables for two. Well worth travelling to, wherever you live because it's a great night out! Thanks
