What's your name?
Jo

Where is it?
Viva Tequila, 960 Gleadless Road, Sheffield S12

What's the number?
0114 265 4414

What's the grub like, then?
Where we once had Italian restuarants Viva Tequila, like most has gone for the mediterranean/ central american theme. However, the food is excellent particularly the steaks, chicken and salmon dishes. Starters are fairly limited but well cooked and presented. For those with a sweet tooth the puds are ice-cream or pancakes.

What did you drink?
Beer and lager on draught plus the usual soft drinks. House wine is a very cheap £4.95 a litre, but is surprisingly drinkable. It's BYO during the week with a small corkage charge, and of course you can always get a tequila from the bar

What's the crowd like?
With the almost now essential weekend bopping, frugging and shaking your thang that goes on until around 1.00am customers tend to be large parties, hen nights etc. - you need to book many weeks in advance.

And the vibe?
Weekends are LOUD lots of food, drink and dancing. Quieter during the week, but there's a very well received live music night every wednesday.

Anything else you'd like to say?
In a few short years Viva Tequila has become the party venue of choice for people from the south of Sheffield, always busy, always popular, always guaranteed a good time.

Value for money?
Two courses plus house wine averages at about £13 - £16 a head. Given the quality of the food it's excellent value for money.

What's your name?
Sue

What's the grub like, then?
I have been to Viva Tequila many times in the past and thought everything about it was brilliant. However, it seems to have gone downhill recently.
The food was quite nice but the portions (especially garlic bread) are smaller than they used to be.

What did you drink?
Took my own wine and was charged £2 for corkage which I thought was a bit steep!

What's the crowd like?
Mainly parties of women and a few smaller mixed parties. It was fairly quiet at first but got a bit rowdier as the night went on and people got up dancing to the live entertainment.

And the vibe?
Good.

Anything else you'd like to say?
I have been to Viva Tequila many times in the past and have thoroughly enjoyed everything about it. However, something funny seems to be going on! They are stopping the BYO from January, and the food doesn't seem as good quality. After our meal we got 2 chocolates between 3 of us which, although it may seem petty, was a bit of an insult. Did they expect us to share? I don't think I'll be going there in a hurry again, especially when they stop the BYO wine offer!

Value for money?
The food was good value for money but the corkage is expensive. They are stopping the BYO offer from January 2003. They also failed to take off the £15 deposit that we'd sent in the post. (Had to send a deposit of £5 each for a party of three, which I thought unusual bearing in mind that the restaurant was half empty!) [A deposit for three people? How peculiar! - GC]

If you're not a big food lover or don't get out much, then this is the place for you! Anglacised "Mexican" dishes are plentiful however, remain very average. A good place to go with a party of people for a fun night. Just don't expect the food to be as good as similarly priced Italian & Mexican restaurants throughout Sheffield. Avoid this place if you're after a romantic meal or gastronomic delight. But you wouldn't be going here if you were? In short, this is a "fun" place to eat with friends, with the emphasis more on the fun than the food. (",)

im a member of staff at viva tequila and i cant agree with some of the comments stated. we do not serve chips with enchiladas unless specifically asked for. bearing in mind that these comments date back to 2003 they are massivley out of date. we do not ask for deposits from parties of three unless we are full and have limited space which is understandable as we need to make every seat count. as for giving two chocolates to a party of three with their bill was a mistake and should not have happened. viva tequila is an excellant restaurant dedicated to the enjoyment of its customers. the comments posted on this web site seem a little petty and should not sway peoples decision to come and dine at our restaurant.

Went to Viva Tequila with a crowd of workmates for a leaving party. Excellent food, cheap wine which wasnt too bad, excellent desserts and great fun. Am definitely going back here again soo. And the BYO offer is still on in the weekend, and now they also do 2 for 1 twice a week!! What more can you ask for?

I have been a regular at viva tequila ever since they opened in 1998 and think it is still one of the best restaurnts in sheffield. They have now changed their name to MAMBO and BRING YOUR OWN WINE is back on.

Craig writes:
As far as the atmosphere of the place goes, its reputation precedes it. I used to live near there and regularly saw happy punters coming out with Sombreros and dancing down the street.

The food however is a major let down. Although not bad, it is hardly traditional Mexican food. Never have I had enchiladas served with chips!!!! It should be served with Mexican rice, salad and re-fried beans.

Come on Viva Tequila - if you want that Mexican image, then don't serve English food with Mexican. Drop the chips and serve it properly.
