For
years the words "Sheffield" and "cultural desert"
went hand in hand. Whilst this is changing rapidly with the regeneration
of our fine city, one road has been the place to eat long before
the developers moved in.
London
Road, a kind of downmarket version of Ecclesall Road with more football
violence, has been packed with eateries since time immemorial.
Here
one can gorge on such diverse fair as Afro-Caribbean or Vietnamese
noodles if the mood takes you.
So,
when I was called into action to provide a suitable night of food
and entertainment for my partners mother who had made the
long trip to the Steel City from Eastbourne I immediately knew where
we would be headed.
Viva
Latino, rather bizarrely, offers a mixture of Italian and Mexican
foods. Dont let that worry you, quality is not compromised
by the decision to offer two wildly varying kinds of dish.
We
opted for the vegetable fajitas and the longish wait for our meals
was worth it. The food is good quality and great value. Theres
a well stocked bar too and we did our best to run it dry.
Perhaps
the best thing about Viva Latino, though, is the atmosphere of this
small but intimate place.
Be
prepared to climb onto your chairs and sing along when the excellent
Tessa Montez, who regularly guests here on Wednesdays, gets everyone
in the party mood.

linda hi we totally disagree with kate we went to viv latino on two occasions the first was at our friends hen night and we had a fantastic night out it was on a saturday and enjoyed it emmensly we had our meals and later on in the evening enjoyed limbo dancing with waiters and really had a good evening the second time we went back to viva latino i took my boyfriend and his parents it was on a sunday where they do a two for one offer on pizza and pastas a very good selection on the menu and very well priced very pleaseant background music and we enjoyed everything about the place so all in all we would reccomend the place to all our friends
Kate I beg to differ. I went last night for my boyfriend's birthday and I didn't think much at all to the clientele or decor. The food was alright (although £12.50 for 4 Fajitas seemed very steep) but the crowd were as common as muck. There was a party of neanderthal men sitting by the door and the staircase who thought it necessary to openly sexually harass almost every female that passed them or went up/down the stairs. They were very rowdy in doing so but were not even warned by the management. There was also 2 other large groups of mainly females who were very loud and discussed (at great volume and in great depth) such issues as male penis size. Call me a snob, but this is just wasn't the calibre of clientele I expected at all in a relatively expensive and supposedly cultured restaurant. In summary, fairly nice food though quite steep for fajitas, but let down by the clientele and tired interior.
Bev We went to Viva Latino as a family (with two boys aged 10 and 13) for my husbands birthday and had a wonderful meal, although I wouldn't recommend ordering a starter unless you're starving as we had far too much food! The food was really tasty and was freshly cooked, and we all enjoyed it. Would definitely go again. 20/04/05
