Where
is it?
Ranulph's
2 Hutcliffe Wood Road
Beauchief Sheffield
S8 0EX
What's
the number? 0114

What's
the grub like, then?
The food was excellent. The fact that the menu was kept minimalistic
meant that the chef could concentrate on making each course/dish
a delight.
People
that are a little funny about their food may struggle with a small
menu - however my wife is one of these people and she found the
experience wonderful.
What
did you drink?
The restaurant has no bar so you take your own wine. we took the
opportunity to take three different bottles of red. spannish, calafornian
and Australian. Would have been nice to finnish with a good port
or Brandy though.
What's
the crowd like?
The restarant although only seating 26 was quite empty we four and
two other tables of six and two. It should be noted that it has
recently changed hands and we went on a bank holiday weekend.
And
the vibe?
The size of the restaurant lends to a very friendly atmosphere.
Anything
else you'd like to say?
The menu did include a couple of vegitarian starters and a vegitarian
main course. Couldn't say what they were like as I am full blooded
meat eater as were my companions.
Value
for money?
Very good value considering the excellent food. We all had three
courses and the bill was £100.

What's
the grub like, then?
We never expected to find such amazing food in Sheffield! A friend
recommended Ranulph's to us, as we wanted somewhere special to celebrate
an occasion. The meal was mouth-wateringly delicious.
Starters:
My wife had the queen scallops and Prawns, tossed in smoked garlic
and ginger, served in a puffed pastry casing. I had the flat mushrooms,
topped with a 4 cheese mixture, topped with a herb crust and served
with marsala sauce.
Main
Course:
My Wife chose the slow-roasted lamb, with herb garnish, served with
fondant potatoes. Mine was the beef fillet, topped with a stilton
and herb crust, and served with a wild mushroom sauce. We were also
served an enormous platter of fresh vegetables and potatoes.
What
did you drink?
Ranulph's is a B.Y.O. so we accompanied our meal with a bottle of
our favourite Hardy's red. (Currently on offer at our local Hypermarket
at 3 bottles for £10) As the corkage charge is a fairly hefty
£1.50 per bottle, this was offset nicely.
What's
the crowd like?
A mixed group age wise, but above all, I imagine we were all lovers
of good food.
And
the vibe?
The restaurant is small by some standards, compact and bijou by
others, (20 seats) but above all, we found the atmosphere to be
cosy and welcoming.
Anything
else you'd like to say?
You need to book a good few days in advance to get the evening of
your choice, as Ranulph's is becoming quite popular, but I promise
it's well worth the wait.
Value
for money?
The 2 courses menu is £18.95 each person, which for the meal
we enjoyed was very good value indeed.

Jane C My friends and I selected this place for a chat and catch-up. We were impressed that when we rang to book, the lady told us that they did not accept credit/debit cards (not a problem at all, if you are fore-warned.........a bit embarrassing if you didn't know!) and that it was non-smoking. When we mentioned that one in our party had a gluten intolerance, we were told that this wasn't a problem at all - very good news. The food was excellent -but it was ?£19 per head for only two courses.......a bit steep? The interior is very, well, dated and almost unpleasant. We felt the surroundings just did not match up to the food, which was a shame. Perhaps this is why I felt that it was just short of good value......there was very little 'experience' to be had in the meal. On food and service, we could not fault it. It was lovely when the chef came out of the kitchen to check everything and everyone was all right. But there is something missing somewhere. And I really do think that the desserts are either over-priced, or under portioned (and mainly sponge/pastry based, no good for gluten-free!) for ?£4.50 which takes the bill to Town/Ecclesall Road standard. We DID like it - we will go again, but will return home for chocolate and coffees and may take a magaazine to look at instead of the uninspiring decor!!! ;o)

Helen I went recently to this restaurant and found the food to be excellent value. We all had something different and all the dishes were beautifully prepared and contained very good quality ingredients. The fact that it's bring your own wine means that the cost of the night out is reduced considerably. Service was great and they will even nip to the off license for you if you run out of drink! I will be visiting this place again - the food was as good as some of Sheffield's more expensive restaurants for less money, and the service much better.
