What's your name?
Neil Anderson

Where is it?
No 1 Oriental Buffet, 15 Commercial Street, Sheffield S1 (old gas offices near tramstop)

What's the number?
0114 275 1133

What's the grub like, then?
Very good range of Chinese food. Nothing especially exotic but tasty and filling. Anyone should be able to find something they like - spicy, meaty, veggie, whatever you fancy!

What did you drink?
Tried to order tap water AND WAS REFUSED!! My colleague had Chinese Beer - OK

What's the crowd like?
Shoppers, families, office workers - a mixture

And the vibe?
Very grand building. Fairly spartan decor - not a place for a romantic meal!

Anything else you'd like to say?
Can't fathom why they won't serve tap water! On principle I wouldn't order any other drink when refused water - and I may choose to go elsewhere! Good place for a quick lunch - workdays or shopping.

Value for money?
Lunctime buffet of £5.50 for "all you can eat" is EXCELLENT value. Similarly the "happy hour" and "Grand Buffet" (evening) prices, though more expensive, are excellent value.

Review June 2003

What's your name?
Emma

What's the grub like, then?
Excellent, Oriental food!

What did you drink?
Fantastic bottle of House wine

What's the crowd like?
Amazingly varied, thought it was gonna be full of people who were eating cheep food, but there were people celebrating birthdays, getting ready to go out clubbing, couples and business people!

And the vibe?
NOISY! It's in a hall, feels like school!

Anything else you'd like to say?
I enjoyed the experience, apart from the location of the table... in the corridor against the wall!

Value for money?
Amazing value, Exceptional! £8.50 for grand buffet.

have tried several buffets in sheffield and a new one in rotherham which was rubbish.no.1 oriental is the best by far, have now been about 20 times and the food is always fresh and well presented and is in fact better than some top restaurants, went to wokmania was horrible, food was dry and full of pepper stick to no.1 i think, all my friends now go there.

angelgirluk
We go every other month or so. It's lovely, and for the value and the quality of the food we'd probably go more often but what about our weight?!! :) We recommend it to anybody. It's great! The only downside is that they are like hawks waiting for you to finish your meal so they can take away your plate haha! Depending on my mood this can sometimes really pee me off!! Other times I don't mind and realise it's just them doing their job! Have fun x Eat lots! X X X

Rachael
It's good VFM, but very very noisy inside (even when there aren't many people there!) The smoking section is also HUGE (totally un-necessary for that many smoking tables) and there are often queues for non smoking tables at bust times. The food is basic, but its cheap and the staff are friendly and helpful. Just expect lots of grease in your meals.

Dave
Horrendous place for veggies. Particularly avoid the Christmas Banquet - even less veggie options. One to avoid for the herbivores...

Bellman
Superb place, been more than a dozen times. Good food, good VFM and friendly staff. Worth a look if you havn't been before always come out completely stuffed and ready to burst. Hmm, think i'll go again tonight as feeling hungry now.

John
I likes it very much

the blob
woooooooo it was good

A very nice place to eat, I enjoyed the concert hall like environment, I can just imagine how much reverb I'd get playing bass guitar in there. Haha, anyway as well as the amazing roof section I enjoyed the food. Most of the main courses can be found in any Chinese buffet, however it was when I went back for desserts I realised this one stood out. Agar Jelly? Never heard of it, but it's very, very nice. I recommend anyone who goes tries it, and I recommend anyone who likes Chinese goes!!!

Alison
Fine if you like everything in batter and fried

DANNY BOY
Good value for money. Food is suprizingly good for a buffet. BEWARE: wear jog pants with a draw string waist band. You'll need it. (And dont expect to go out on the lash after. I was too full to go boozing)

Natalie Fowler
the foods great they have a good choice of dishes. i just think the atmosphere doesnt match with the food.

Amy
This place is great, especially if you are a student and on limited budget. my friends and I went there the other week and had a meal for 7 for next to nothing. some of the food can be slightly strange like a chicken and prawn thing that I had, which was very salty, but most of the food is really nice. its also good if ur hungry, neva go there if you've got to have tea when you get home-i tried it once and thought i would pop! 18/04/05

Excellent Value for Money! Loads to choose from, shame we weren't able to taste everything but were too full. Won't serve water becuase they are giving so much food away, need to make money up somewhere!!! 23/3/05

Nick

REV (Big Legs)

ANITA
GREAT VFM.SUNDAY LUNCH FOR HUBBY,ME AND 3 KIDS UNDER £20.DISAGREE THAT DRINKS ARE OVERPRICED-SOFT DRINKS COST LESS THAN IN PUBS FOR KIDS.GREAT SERVICE-FRIENDLY POLITE STAFF.BEEN NUMEROUS TIMES & NEVER BEEN DISAPPOINTED SAME HIGH STANDARD ALWAYS.

Sarah Lincoln
I went on sunday and the atmosphere is not so great, but the food is excellent. I had none of the sausages and curly fries, but my 2 kids loved it - considering they arent big chinese fans. its great value for money and i would give 4 moos!

Damion
The variation of dishes is fantastic, drinks rather overpriced, staff polite, do you get the impression that the 3 o'clock bell is going to ring for hometime??? well recommended.

Alex
Absolutely amazing, The atmosphere is great the building is brilliant! The place is really laid out. Just enough people to fill the place, The service is great, really friendly waiters. But more importantly the food is brilliant! There is something for everyone. From pork to fish. A great place for the family, on your own and in a Group. Fab!

kerry
great place really good value for money very filling and great variety of desserts i like the ice cream machine :) nice atmosphere very friendly

Not bad. Feels like a school hall, I agree. I'm afraid I prefer Indian food, but where are their town-centre buffets? Come on guys, gap in the market. Buff-a-ruff, people.

Laura Fowler
A few people are complaining about the atmosphere within the No.1 Oriental Buffet. I have to admit that although I was confused at the School Dinner Hall/Swimming Pool style atmosphere, but what you have to remember is that this building was once the original Gas Works for Sheffield, a very important building in it's time. Aside from that, I enjoyed the food, although a 'spice guide' on each item would be appreciated (anyone who doesn't like Hot Spicy Food should steer clear of the Vietnamese menu items!) but other than that, for the price I believe it is a good system which works well bothe within this restaurant and the newly opened Jumbo Chinese close to the Crucible Theatre.

Carrie
too much fried food, lack of original taste.

david
nice food yet they add to much bits to some

Ruth
value for money. But it's strange when i tasted all the food as only one same taste...hm...!you got the Peking duck pan cake roll on Saturday night!

Mary
If you like things fried in batter this is for you, One mysterious battered thing turned out to be a crab stick (!!??)It was very greasy and, as a vegetarian I was stuck with rice and plain noodles - it was also not clear which dishes were actually the veggie options.

Big Neil from Meersbrook
Fabulous! Went with the missus and two kids (11 and 8), all thoroughly enjoyed it, although the kids were confused as to why the waiters kept taking their empty plates away! Brilliant, been twice now.Recommend it to anyone.

david f
Like eating in the school canteen, with food cooked by Jamie Oliver. Tremendous value if you're not bothered about an atmosphere.

Henry
Superb great VFM with great selection. Perfect for a quick meal before going on to somewhere else.

nmj
I like this place particularly because it seves a wide choice of food. vfm is ok - grand buffet has not much difference to any other time of day. never been to some where that served such nice food and didn't make you nervous!

David Emmett (demmett8y@hotmail.com)
The number one oriental buffet in sheffield is brill and is the best place to eat down town. I recommend it to anyone who wants a decent meal for a decent price.

Abby
foul. Cheap greasy and no choice for vegetarians. East One is far superior

Kate Smith
I think its a great place to eat. Its great value for money and you don't need to get dressed up to go. A great place for a good catch up before you go out drinking. New ice cream machine is a dream!!

Mark Clayton
Went on a sunday night, have been to several chinese buffets before thought it was excellent value for money. food was replaced on a regular basis and food area was kept very clean! Choice of food available was good for price, excellent value compared to a takeaway, even got free puds. If you like chinese and value for money highly reccomend it!

Nicholas Knight
I went to the resterent and i thought it was the best until i tries the food ate the Jumbo buffet whwre the old Halifax used to be in Sheffield City Centure but its still great value for money.

Ali
What a strange place !Feels a bit like a huge school hall - the sort of place that opens when the local community has been hit by a flood and everyone has to chow-down together ! Food was very good VFM. We went on a Sunday when the price is aprox £6.50. have to say I was bemused at some of the selections - sausage rolls (yes, the pastry variety!)curly fries and hash browns, along with the usual spring rolls, sesame toasts. Mains werev a selection of curries, chow mein, different rices and noodles. I have to agree there's not much selection for the veggies. LOADS of different sweets if you've still got room after you've filled your plate umpteen times. Service efficient, but drinks were a little pricey. I'd give this place 3 moos.

Nicky Mooman
Veggies beware: when we went, there were NO vegetarian main meals at all! So unless you are willing to make do with a bowl of noodle with a couple of spring rolls on top, stay away!
