The atmosphere's lively, the food's great, but Scotty wasn't sure about the service at Las Iguanas...

What's your name?
Scotty D

Where is it?
Las Iguanas
West One
Fitzwilliam Street
Sheffield S1

What's the number?
0114 252 1010

What's the grub like, then?
Very good grub.

The menu is an eclectic mix dishes from Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela and Chile. Presentation is good and the quantity is just about right.

My baby squid and sun-dried tomato starter had a sauce that kept me reaching for the bread, and the XinXim main course (Chicken cooked with coconut, lime and peanuts) was incredibly tasty. As this is Pele's favourite dish I'm hoping that it helps me with my ball control too!

The wife had Duck Tacquitos followed by Crayfish and Salmon tortillos, both of which were well presented and very tasty.

The only slight downside is that the service was perhaps too efficient and the starters arrived a little too quickly.

What did you drink?
Cocktails are the thing here, but Las Iguanas has a good selection of beers (mainly bottled) and a small selection of mainstream wines.

The Negra Modelo beer from Mexico went down very well.

We finished off the meal with a "sipping quality" Cachaça on the rocks. Cachaça apparently is the spirit of Brazil and the 3rd most drunk spirit in the world. This was delicious and worth a try - its a nice smooth drink and not as strong as a whisky or brandy.

What's the crowd like?
A mixed clientele at the time that we ate. We straddled the late afternoon/early evening crowd (we arrived at 6:30) so there was a mixture of casual diners (some with well behaved kids), and trendy types ready for a night out in Sheffield.

And the vibe?
The place is a good mix of informal dining with a more sophisticated ambiance. The decor is modern and architectural with references to the latin theme. Its a lively restaurant but not at all boisterous.

Anything else you'd like to say?
A good choice for an informal dinner thats a little bit more special than TGI Fridays, Chiquitos, Frankie and Benny's, et al.

Value for money?
I was pleasantly suprised when the bill came. We had starters and main courses plus a good number or drinks and the bill was slightly under 50 quid.
Excellent Value.

It's OK for a chain restaurant. I've been a few times and find that if you have the staples (nachos, fajitas etc) it's quite good and the portions reasonable. Unfortunately if you pick one of dishes that need more skill to cook (steak, fish etc) they tend to disappoint usually by being overcooked and quite small. Service is variable depending how busy they are but the staff are pleasant enough.

we went for an early evening meal and it was terrible. Both starters were poor - both were cold, although ironically the quesedilla was burned! For main I had the steak which was a bad cut and very fatty. The service was poor and when we highlighted how disappointing the food was the waitress said she would pass on the comments to the chef. Definately a restaurant to avoid, go to antibos next door instead

My wife and I have been there twice now, and both times have really enjoyed the meal. Service was great, and the staff friendly and helpful. The early bird menu is definitely worth looking at.

Reading the review I'm surprised at the two star rating - it comes across as deserving more than that. I went last week 30/6/05 for an early evening special and found plenty of choice, well presented and tasty. Thank goodness the servings are just right - who wants as much as you can eat which appears to be an invasive, unwanted trend? Music helped the mood without being too loud and the staff were friendly, unobtrusive and smiled which is always welcome. Good place for an occasional treat- I shall go back. 3/4 stars seems a fairer judgement.

I'm surprised by some of the comments. I've been to Las Iganuanas a few times, and enjoyed the bargain early bird menu, and the food has been excellent!

I was not impressed to be honest - it was reletively new when it opened but we went as a group and it seemed everything they sold came with the same sauce and side and it all tasted the same! BUT its saving grace was the Sangria which was gorgeous!! 21/06/05

emma
very disapointed- tried this place twice after recommendations- the food was overcooked each time- steak was the size of a cracker with 4 wedges for £11.50-side salad limp-sangria had little wine content- service poor- waited ages to be served then 40 mins for starters.- best thing about this place was cocktails were 2 for the price of one when we were there. 19/03/05

Great restaraunt, love the range of dishes and flavours available. Decent sized portions and reasonable with great cocktails. One word of warning - if you (like me) get annoyed when you order your steak cooked 'blue' and it comes out brown all the way through, then don't order the steak!

mike
over priced. food was unexciting and thrown at the plate. prawns were over cooked and bland... nice try but don't quite reach the expectations from the menu

amanda
Agree with pete service poor food over priced and cold !! never again

aliss
i've only been once, but that food was great (duck for start, chicken fajitas for main), loved the raspberry sangria, and i thought the atmosphere was really good too. went mid-week, so it wasn't too busy and we weren't rushed out of the door after we'd finished eating - plenty of time for another jug of sangria!

Alex from S5
We had a nachos starter to share between two for a starter, then my fiancee had the chicken fajitas, which were fantastic; sizzling hot and recognisabl whole chicken fillets, whilst I had the Xinxim; delicious and very rich! We had a lovely spanish red wine with our meal and thought the prices to be really good. Definately closer to 4 moo's than 2!

Neal from Lodge Moor
Also found service rather lacking. Food OK, but nothing spectacular for the price and portions quite small. Beer prices not in Weatherspoons league. Two moo's max I'm afriad - "could do better"

John from Crookes
I agree with Scotty's comments - certainly one of the better Latin eateries in Sheffield. Slightly surprised it only got two 'moos' given the comment - I'd have given it at least 4. As for Peter, try it again, I've been there three times now and have never been disappointed.

Peter from S6
Service was poor, food overpriced and they added another tabled bills to the tab. Not the best of evenings out! There are certainly better latin eateries in town.
