If you can get past the Guardian reading clientele, the dodgy formica topped tables and the woefully outdated decor, there's an excellent curry waiting for you.If you want pleasant surroundings stay at home.If you want a good curry go to The Kashmir.

As an "ex-pat"working in the smoke I have very fond memories of the Kashmir. If it is about to be demolished I shall definately make my way up the M1 PDQ for a last supper!

Don't know when these reviews dated from but the food has definitely been pretty good recently. Catch it quick as the council are going to knock it down soon - then the area really will have lost its soul.

Didn't really agree with the other reviewers here, maybe it was the chef and matra'd's night off.
Decor wise - Mangla is very "down to earth" but this place looked like a soup kitchen. Seriously if you've never been, be warned it is that bad. Food was nice enough but not outstanding, I found Mangla much better and visit there quite a bit. Sevice was one lax old guy who placed our parties knives and forks in the middle of the table for us to set ourselves. My main problem though was none of the above but the fact it wasn't that cheap. I've had loads of indian meals in venues that actually look like restaurants with some service and paid less for food as good. I'll probably stick to Gulshan on the wicker and Mangla for the raw Curry nights

I used to have fond memories of the Kashmir but after one too many that tasted of tinned soup I gave up. I went back earlier in the year as the rumour was that it had got good again. I don't get how someone can run a place where the setting is as perfect as The Kashmir, a charming host, scratched red formica tabletops, pub across the road that lets you fetch over your beers, scruffy flooring, dodgy art for sale on the walls, a table full of drunk climbers next to you and yet the curry is so flipping soulless. How do they do it? Everything else is perfect. Yeah I know it's cheap, but so are other places not half so famous. It's not that the cheapness means stinting on the ingredients, my curry was chockfull of pistachios but someone had put a lot of effort into taking all the texture and flavour out of them. Potatoes are not expensive, they just need to taste of something rather than unsalted water as if they have been overcooked separately and bunged in the curry at the last minute. Do it the other way round, mate. Potatoes in at the start, pistachios in at the end.

I'll go along with the others. Great food, relaxed atmosphere. I go back over and over. Hooked on the vegetable biryani. At the Kashmir spices are used to flavour the food here not as an offensive weapon. You must try it.

Vastly overated, but the service is very friendly.

Amazing place, from the formica tables to the food that's so delish you leave with a curry baby in your stomach. Many excellent meals there, can't help going back again and again.

This is the next best curry house after the MANGLA.
Cannot fault the huge mixed starters. (pity they don't do this as a take away).

Been visiting the Kashmir for over 20 years now - still great curries, great pint from the East House over the road, unique and hard to beat.

I agree with the others but want to mention the amusing descriptions on the menu such as "a microcosm of flavour"... genius! You can also take your own wine.

About time The Kashmir was recognised for what it is - probably the best eating place in Sheffield!
Great vegetarian food and an atmosphere all of its own - plus intelligent and witty conversation from the proprietor, when he's not rushed off his feet!

Not only is it the best Curry House in South Yorkshire, but it’s the best I’ve ever been to except for when I was in India. They do a fantastic range of Vegetarian Curry's as well as the usual Meat dishes. You can basically make your own curry from the list of Vegetarian ingredients. There is a large non-smoking area, and the cost is very reasonable. You can bring your own beverage, or buy them from the pub across the road. Total 100% value for money.
