What's
your name?
Emma
Where
is it?
Groucho's, 543 Ecclesall Rd, Sheffield, S11
What's
the number?
0114 266 3219
What's
the grub like, then?
The grub at the new Groucho's is good.
You're
in a restaurant opposite the (very nice but) highly priced Nonna's
and you feel as though you've got a good deal.
Choose
from fish (and a wide range - swordfish, monkfish, scallops, halibut);
chicken - stuffed, adorned and generally fiddled about with in a
culinary way; steaks and pasta. While it looks a little on the pricey
side, the dishes come with veg/salad and potatoes/chips included,
which is a bonus nowadays!
I
ordered a tomato and onion salad and it came as alternate slices
in a tower - fancy in a Jamie Oliver kind of way!
Good
selection of starters and homemade puds - pancakes, creme brulee,
bread and butter pudding etc
What
did you drink?
We had wine, which was reasonably priced and jugs of tap water,
which they didn't mind bringing us. Beer available too.
What's
the crowd like?
Thirty somethings and above looking for a "nice" saturday
night out. a place where you'd find tables of two couples out for
a night.
And
the vibe?
Nice furniture, nice wooden floors. Upmarket bistro atmosphere.
Fairly quiet with an amiable low level buzz.
AVOID
AT ALL COSTS THE TWO TABLES BY THE DOOR.
The
New Groucho's have installed a domestic double glazed door, which
no one knows how to close (TIP: push door closed and slip handle
UP to secure closed door). We must have closed the door 20 times.
Ruined a perfectly good meal.
And
I'll tell you what annoyed me even more.... people who were evidently
born in a barn and didn't care less if the door was open or shut.
And
if you were the portly middle aged man in a sky blue shirt sleeved
shirt who went outside to answer a mobile call - you really annoyed
me with your lax door attitude.
Anything
else you'd like to say?
Parmesan shavings are a nice touch instead of the now ubiquitous
grater at table. But don't serve it in a plastic bowl, please.
While
the puddings probably were homemade (as promoted) I would imagine
the pancakes were bought in, but the pudding was home-put together,
but I do draw the line at aerosol cream - somehow it doesn't go
with the classy image Groucho's wants.
Creme
brulee got the thumbs up.
Value
for money?
It was good value for money if you want something a little upmarket
and a chance to dine in pleasant surroundings. The door situation
really got to us by the end of our main course.
For
five of us: shared garlic ciabatta for starter, 2 bottles of wine,
main courses and pudding - a little over £120.

What's
the grub like, then?
l went to Groucho's to celebrate my 30th birthday with a group of
6 friends. The choice of food is definitely upmarket in relation
to most of the other menus available on Ecclesall road. I had Crevettes
with Pak Choi, followed by John Dory "emballe" with ginger
, fennel and lemon. Absolutely exquisite.
What
did you drink?
We selected a bottle of Chateau neuf du pape and as it was my birthday
a bottle of "bubbly"
What's
the crowd like?
Aged between 25 - 60, not many students, which was refreshing
And
the vibe?
lively, yet very relaxed
Anything
else you'd like to say?
The manager was obviously very busy , yet still had time to organise
a "special" sweet for me and lead a happy birthday song
to me, very unexpected too
Value
for money?
Yes it was considering it is Ecclesall Road and the amount of competition
on there
Michelle P Grouchos is a loss to Ecclesall Road. It was great food and relaxed atmosphere, ever changing, innovative menu - not pretentious and overpriced as 543 -
SueB I think you should think change the review because Groucho's was bought out and renamed the '543' last August. Food is now modern British cuisine and fantastic. My friends and I went a few weeks ago and were in heaven. Everything obviously home made and the manager and staff were great. More expensive than the old Groucho's, but definately worth visiting. Lovely wine list, much more extensive than before. We had a great evening and will definately go again.
Anon The pasta is dried pasta, ravioli is pre bought. the uddign are pre-made form tescos. Luckily its closing down. However some of the food is really good. Just have to be careful what you order
Debbie C Classy food, classy place and about half the price of Nonna's. Great evening had by all.
danielle lightfoot i used to work there and can assure you that the pancakes are homemade - cow!!! food is exceptional
