Susanne likes the China Rose for a smart Chinese meal but Mr Baldone thinks it would be cheaper to fly abroad and eat chinese food there!

What's your name?
Susanne

Where is it?
The China Rose
16 South Parade
Bawtry
Doncaster DN10

What's the number?
01302 710461

What's the grub like, then?
Yummy!!!! very nice food, although have a practice with your chopsticks before you go incase they insist you use them, just depends on which waiter/waitress you get.

What did you drink?
White wine, nice

What's the crowd like?
broad range of people eating

And the vibe?
Nice relaxed atmosphere, though do ask not to sit in the middle of the restaurant as your voice carries and so everyone in the middle bit can hear what you are saying, however, the flip side is you can hear them, :-)

Anything else you'd like to say?
You need to book well in advance

Value for money?
Yes, very nice food £45 with starter main course x 2 and bottle of wine and coffee x 2

What's your name?
Mr Baldone

What's the grub like, then?
Well Mrs Baldone & myself are back after a sundrenched fortnight in the Algarve, where we discovered the taste for chinese food, we looked up on our fav website & saw what the cow had to offer - china rose was the outcome.

Sorry you people that go there will have to be more objective, the reviews just are not up to standard. The food was ok, thats all though.

What did you drink?
Didn't drink - couldn't afford it.

What's the crowd like?
All i have to say is b.m.w. & 4x4 packed the car park.

And the vibe?
False.

Anything else you'd like to say?
In the Algarve the best chinese meal we had came to just over £30 with wine, for the cost of this establishment it is only just cheaper than flying to Portugal & eating there, and the quality & quantity is better in the algarve. Staff rated exelent so did the host.

Value for money?
We and friends spent a good £100+

What's the grub like, then?
The food was very nice, but served on platters went cold very quickly and became quite inedible.

What did you drink?
Glass of red wine was nice.

What's the crowd like?
Mixed group of people for New Year's Eve meal.

And the vibe?
Mixed. At times great party feeling, at others just background music for long periods of time.

Anything else you'd like to say?
Very disappointing. Dessert for ten people was four satsumas (albeit large) and a bunch of grapes. On the menu this was described as 'Fresh Fruit.' I suppose it was correct but for £49.50.

This in addition to the food going cold so quickly, the poor service and last but not least a band where the guys couldn't sing in tune - it was very disappointing indeed.

Value for money?
Cost £49.50. Definitely not good value. The service was appalling.

It appeared that the staff were in fancy dress, but we had a young man wearing trainers, jeans and t-shirt serving us. Not what I would have thought appropriate to the occasion.

What's your name?

Pete

What's the grub like, then?
Been going to the China Rose since 1991, and it's still the best Chinese / Cantonese in Doncaster, only the Royal Dragon in town comes close.

What did you drink?
Grolsch

What's the crowd like?
Very nice clientelle

And the vibe?
Relaxed

Value for money?
Yes, Very Good Value, Cost About £40 per head.

I have visited the China Rose many times over the years on my trips back home from the Middle East where I live and work and never had a bad meal. I recently married a Chinese National in China, eating many styles of excelent Chinese food whilst on honeymoon. So on my first trip to England after our wedding I wanted to treat my new wife to a traditional Chinese meal so took her to what I feel is the best Chinese Restaurant in England. Unfortunately my desire to please failed when my wife tried to talk to the staff and realised they couldn't understand her native tongue and then couldn't understand why a menu in chinese language couldn't be produced. After I translated the menu for her my embarrassment was complete as my wife stood up and said we are leaving, I can feed us for a month at these prices. I still believe it's the best Restaurant in England and though I don't own a BMW or 4x4 believe that sometimes you have to pay a little more for something that you truly believe is good.

Must say, I've personally been eating at the China Rose for nearly 15 years and I love it. I've it eaten chinese food all over the world, and none even compare to that place. We have been going there together once every few months for over a year now and we never get bored of the place. The food is quite expensive, but the quality is second to none. Mr Baldone is obviously talking about a different place, the food never goes cold, and the service is impecable! Going there tomorrow in fact and will be for years more to come!

We visit the China Rose, when we stay in Doncaster (about every other month). The food is always very good and the service excellent, from being welcomed on arrival, to paying the bill and leaving. Yes, it is a bit more expensive, but if you want good food, you pay for it. If you want a takeaway, there's one over the road, that's good as well!!

Clare
I have been going to the China Rose on a regular basis since 1989. You do not go to this restaurant if you want a takeaway, it pitches itself above that market. If you want a meal in pleasant surroundings, be well looked after by professional staff, and eat chinese food that is consistently of a high quality but not necessarily at the cheapest prices then this is the place for you.

Bob
We had a brill meal there only two weeks ago and it was supurb, i can not fault it one bit. the food was out of this world and the service was the best i have EVER seen! give them a pay rise!

lin
generally agreed with the review. Visited several times and quality of food and service always high. Some of staff surly and appear demoralised.Lovely relaxing place for a special meal and night out. Dont like that couples restricted to eating times tho!

Annie
We went for a meal to celebrate my Mums 60th birthday and throughly enjoyed it. Yes it isn't cheap, but most good food is pricey!!

emma,doncaster

Great place for a special meal. The food is excellent as are the surroundings. Very impressive

Dave
Agree with the review except I have one problem with the place; they canoy book a table for two unless you want to eat at 6pm or 10pm. Whats the point of that. We have been eating there for three years but now we can't go as 6 is to early and 10 is to late!!

Ian White
Agree totally with the review, the food is fantastic, half a crispy duck with pancakes etc for a starter for two is superb. The decor and general ambience are very good and will definately be eating there again.
