My
dear friend Laura recommended this restaurant to me, you know. She
and her boyfriend go there when they have a special occasion to
celebrate.
I do
like the fact that Sheffield has a good range of decent Chinese
restaurants.
A lot
of Londons Chinatown has gone too trendy-focused now - glass,
chrome and lacklustre dim sum. But in Sheffield, you can still get
a good old-style meal.
The
Bull and I were encouraged by the traditional 70s-style Chinese
restaurant decor, the tables filled with happy families (Chinese
restaurants are terribly good at dealing with children) and the
stern head waitress, who clearly ruled the waiting staff with a
rod of iron. (Probably with a spikey point on the end of it.)
Service
was prompt and swift, as we watched her bark orders at the clutch
of hurried staff running around purposefully. I really admire this
style of service - it works. Madam, I raise my glass to you.
We
chose the basic set menu, which was a little unadventurous of us,
I admit, but we were tired.
The
starter was a mixed platter, which was good although the spare ribs
were a little dry. However, wed ordered an extra portion of
salt and pepper ribs so it didnt matter.
The
main courses were chicken and cashew nuts in a yellowbean style
sauce (a bit over-seasoned), sweet and sour pork (disappointing
and too vivid in colour for me), sizzling beef with green peppers
(delicious) and stir fried vegetables (most pleasant). We washed
it down with Tiger Beer and Heineken, both well-priced.
If
we return, I think itll be as a group, because the groups
we saw there seemed to be having a ball and the portions are big
(Greedy Cows friends are at least as greedy as she is).
We
thought that, though the food (beef aside) wasnt the best
wed eaten, and possibly slipped into blandness in places,
it was Jolly Good Value. There was enough left over for lunch for
two the next day, and the staff were terribly sweet about boxing
it up. (Dont ever be afraid to ask, its quite alright,
and after all, youve paid for it and many of these things
taste even better the next day.)

Large room, tacky, garish decoration, lots of mirrors, fast service
verging on the rude, noisy, huge round tables, upstairs, all elements
that make it the most genuine 'Chinese' (eg. Cantonese) eating experience
I have had outside Hong Kong. Chinese food is one of my favourites.
I have eaten in Chinatown in both London and Manchester and eaten
in Chinese restaurants across the country. Nothing gets closer to
the genuine Hong Kong experience than Candy Town. (But you may have
to go to Hong Kong to appreciate it!) (sorry for the place name
dropping, work took me there a few years ago)

very poor. I am a vegetarian and the selection on the menu was far
frm what i would expect ata chinese restaurant. I had to put up
with mock chicken that was so disgusting i had to leave th meal.
Drinks were distictly average. I cannot nay daren't recomend this
palce to anyone i know. quite expensive for such a poor range of
supposedly vegetarian food
Ryan I love this place, the tacky decor just adds to the appeal and my girlfriend swears the mirrors on the stairs make you look slim!
Go for the sizzling beef, but be prepared for everyone watching you as they bring it to your table!
Roger I fully concurr with the positive comments from the other veggies. I have been back numerous times and am very happy to have the set Vegetarian Menu. As well as enjoying the food itself, the nice touch is that the waiters attend the table to shred the "mock duck" and make up the pancakes, it may seem a small point but it really does make you feel that they've thought about service to veggies. Lots of other restaurants are content to plonk a plate of vegetables in front of you while they attend to the meat eaters. Drinks are reasonable priced, which makes all the difference on a family night out! Well done candy Town.
Nikki Burgess My boyfriend and I (both veggie), have been eaten at Candytown many a time & we adore the veggie set menu! It seems to be the only Chinese restaurant we've found that serve meat alternatives as opposed to just vegetables. The Mock Duck pancakes are soo delicious, as is the blackbean sizzling tofu. Ok, the decor isn't very upto date, but I feel it makes up with a very satisfying meal :D 2 very enthusiastic thumbs up!
Linda My family and I went to candy town to celebrate two things my mothers anniversary of her death and my brothers birthday. There was 14 of us and I could not fault a thing all night. The food was great the service was just right and even though we had not told them it was a birthday celebration once they new out came two cakes with candles. We had more than enough food and all the drinks we wanted and only paid £22 per head. Very clean and roomy. Thank you to them for making the evening memorable. 31/05/05
Bob This is my favourite restaurant in the world. i particulaerly like the monkeys in curry. unusaul but delish! the spinning table really adds to the dining experince and can keep the kids amused as a roundabout. love it! love it! love it!
Jon This is not trad style Chinese this is bog standard anglicised Chinese gloop. For a taste of real China try the China cafe across the road which is half the price and double the taste.
Ali Went recently (March 04) and the place was packed out. Decor has been updated and its now brighter and fresher-looking than before. 5 people in party - 3 had set menu B, 2 had Veggie menu A - all food arrived quickly (a little TOO quickly really, would be nice to have a small rest between courses)but all food freshly cooked and the "mock" duck for veggies is an excellent stand in for the real thing. No room for desserts, just the fresh oranges they bring you at the end of your meal. An "OK" dining experience - 3 moos.
Adie This is the worst Chinese restaurant that I have eaten in. How is it possible to make greasy rice? The bowls were covered in a film of grease. I could not recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Caroline I have been going to Candytown for many years now. I can honestly say that I have never had a bad meal. The prices are average. You just cant beat that set menu B !!!!
Andy I have always enjoyed my meal at Candytown its had the same owners for years and they are very friendly and hospitable. It proberley needs a revamp as its the same decor i remember when i was a kid.The food however always puzzeled me how it could be ordered and 2 minutes later be in front of you.
Nigel Turver We also like Candytown Chinese on the bottom of London Road but as your reviews say its far too quick a service ! its time to go home 1/2 hour after arriving, I must also say that the place has been redecorated and is now much better as we stopped going for over a year.
