What's your name?
Hairy Mary

Where is it?
631-633 Ecclesall Road,
SHEFFIELD

What's the number?
0114 267 0565

What's the grub like, then?
Caffe Uno has an Italian theme, so both me and my chum Annie Rexia had the Pizza Marinara, which was really nice, containing as it did bits of red snapper, and seam bream - not your usual boring tuna/prawn seafood combo then.

The pizzas are of the thin and crispy variety, which was also nice given the current American fad for stuffed crust horrids, but filling enough nonetheless.

What did you drink?
We shared a bottle of Casa la Joya Sauvingnon Blanc, which did the trick, even if it was a tad pricey at £13.00 odd

What's the crowd like?
We went at lunchtime on Saturday, which probably accounted for the nice mix of couples and young families. There were loads of kids, but all very well behaved. It was really nice.

And the vibe?
Very informal and laid back. We took ages to decide what to have, as we were busy catching up, but the staff didn't mind a bit, and were in no hurry for us to leave either.

Very relaxing, and the Ecclesall Road setting is another bonus, especially because there's none of the 'see and be seen' claptrap as in other places locally.

Anything else you'd like to say?
If you're celebrating a special occasion and tell the staff, a pud is often thrown in for free. Me and Annie discovered this at another friend's hen night a while ago. A wonderful creamy chocolate brownie type concocotion was brought to our table, with five spoons, and we all felt thoroughly sick! Wonderful.

Value for money?
Hmm. Not bad. It was £28 for the two of us, which is quite a lot considering we didn't bother with pud, but it was a very enjoyable afternoon, so all in all it was worth it.

What's your name?
Lydia

What's the grub like, then?
Delicioso! Tasty, and good portion sizes, truly delicious and a plus to actually see the chefs cook your meal!

What did you drink?
Everytime i go i get the hot chocolate which is served with a piece of biscotti and topped with (optional) whipped cream... amazing!

What's the crowd like?
The clientele are extremely friendly, and give you an incentive to come back again and again and again!

And the vibe?
The atmosphere is perfect, and doesent feel too uptight to let kids come along for a fun night.

Value for money?
Great value... there are also always good deals on!

When this opened it was very impressive for a chain. However, the initial effort didn't last long. We had a couple of those "I would have enjoyed beans on toast at home ten times more" experiences and then gave it a miss for a long time. We recently tried it again for Sunday lunch and were pleasantly surprised; not gourmet - but certainly edible and reasonable service.

Oh dear! Let me open on positively, Caffe Uno has a good atmosphere, even on a Sunday evening it was nicely full and it really could not be better located. I know you should never expect too much of chain restaurants, the food will always be mediocre (the second chef of the week just left and the waiting staff are operating the microwave unsupervised etc.) but sometimes the food is just so bad something must be said! This is such an occasion. I have a deep seated disdain for parsley, parsley is not, ever, ever a substitute for tarragon…ever! Did they think I wouldn’t notice? Well I did notice and I was not amused. Parsley was a herb especially bred for Berni Inns, its legacy lives on in J. D. Weatherspoon free houses, why was it in my starter? Oh well, you can write off one bad course, they had another chance. Seafood risotto. Rubbery squid, some sort of mullet and for that kitsch dining experience - roll your eyes with me - a sprinkling of parsley. Oh yes and the saffron rice was not saffron rice…in fact it wasn’t even the correct rice for a risotto and it wasn’t even soft. The whole affair was as tasteless as a stretch limo and at least as expensive. You won’t believe me but I’m actually very easily pleased – all I wanted were the dishes I ordered as they were described on the menu, they didn’t require a couple of Michelin stars to get right, just a little care, a little skill and a little pride, these seemed sadly lacking. We used to like Caffe Uno a lot - mainly because they catered for my onion allergy and my husband's gluten free diet. However, on the past couple of occasions when we've eaten there, they messed up the orders - i ended up with a dish containing onions and him with a non-gluten free meal. They sorted it in the end, but not after we'd got thoroughly fed up. It seems to depend which chef is in -some have a much better grasp of special dietary requirements than others! It's a shame though - cos we liked it here!

ive been twice to cafe uno, and on both occassions, the food has been fantastic. atmosphere is lovely and service is of satisfied standard. Hands up for cafe uno and not pizza hut (i am definately willing to pay the few quid extra for better food)!! i will also be going to marco@milano tomorrow, to see if it is as fab as people make it!! will let u know... heehee!

It makes me laugh reading reviews of Italians which mention authentic Italian pizza. I'd heard this about Uno and despite my reservations about it being overpriced and full of kids I went and tried it. I agree with the previous comment, if you want Italian and particularly Italian pizza, go to Italy. Pizza at Uno is about as authentically Italian as Spaghetti Bolognese.

Cafe Uno - very family friendly - although sticklers that our child couldn't have anything from the child menu until 12pm (it was 11.45!) - this even meant she didn't get the fun time menu with free crayons (she's 2 for goodness sake!). Also they destroyed their all day breakfast with this weird spiced sausage that is as dense as a house brick. We went recently with family, and all decided to revisit this classic dish. Result? 5 empty plates but for a sausage on each. Get the message! But staff usually very friendly and balloons tied to prams / high chairs.

Dan
Food was of a good quality, and the staff quite friendly. On a sunday night it was still quite busy!! Service times were a little bad, but we didn't mind. About 6 of the "specials" were not available - bit disappointing. However the main menu is still quite vast, and there are things to suit all tastes. All in All, we were quite impressed by the whole eperience.

David
Cafe Uno can be very good, and equally - incredibly bad. Which one you get is a lottery not worth the expensive prices Uno charges. If you want an Italian eating experience, go to an Italian restaurant!!
