The
Bull and I were in a mood to follow the advice of famous foodies,
so we decided to eat at the Bahn Nah Thai Restaurant, supposed to
be commended by Will Self.
The
Bahn Nah is located on Nile Street in Broomhill. It boasts of being
the first Thai restaurant in South Yorkshire. Several ornamental
pieces of birds and fishes, and a pleasant odour of curries flavoured
with lemon grass, greeted us as we entered.
We
had trouble finding a table – the place was a bit too cramped for
us. The Bull struggled to keep his hoofs out of the neighbouring
table’s way.
We
skipped the starters. We noticed that many of the guests preferred
to do so even though the restaurant offered a variety of them, such
as Thai fish cakes, deep-fried bean curd and sea weed rolls.
So,
on to the mains.
The
Bull went for pork with fresh ginger while I chose chicken with
garlic and pepper. We ordered egg fried rice and Thai style fried
noodles.
We
also decided to attempt at least one dish that was new to us, so
we ordered Muslim style beef curry.
The
Bull got cross because the portion of fried rice was so tiny that
we had to have the bother of ordering another plate.
My
chicken was good but I did feel that it had too much pepper and
hardly any garlic. The beef curry was tasty, but a bit watery and
the Bull was cross again because whenever he bit into a nice piece
of potato, it turned out to be pineapple.
The
portion of noodles was generous, but it was too sticky and prawny
for my taste.
The
dessert was the best part. We had banana fritters with ice cream
and they were delicious.
We
felt that if more care was put into the cooking and if there was
a bit more space to move about, it would be a worthy experience.
Beer and wine are reasonably priced. The service was fast and good
too.
Bad
news for students, the dishes are expensive and there is no student
discount available.
Moos
– Three, for the service and the dessert, which saved the evening.
Like I said, the food is ok, but not very good value for that kind
of money.
Would
I visit Bahn Nah soon? Nah.
Dear Greedy Cow,
I read your review about Bahn Nah restaurant in Sheffield and I
totally agree with you. You were being quite generous in giving
them 3 moos. I wouldn't give them one!!
The time I was there, my partner and I have just spent 3 months
travelling around Asia - we covered Thailand, Malaysia, Bali and
the Philipines at the time. We enjoyed Thai cuisine very much that
we thought we will indulge ourselves just after we got back to Sheffield.
I found the atmosphere is good although it was a bit cramped. Although
we like Thai food , we cannot take food that are too spicy. We find
that although some Thai food can be spicy, most are quite tasty
and mild - almost a cross between and indian curry and chinese stir
fry.
We ordered chicken satay & steamed dumpling for starters, chicken
with basil leaves, steamed fish, plain rice. I told the waitress
that my partner at the time cannot take food that is too spicy and
could she ask the cook to hold back on the chillis in the chicken
with basil leaves.
Much to our annoyance, our chicken satay was very dry , the steam
dumpling was also dry in the edges, and our chicken dish came with
chillies still in it. I asked the waitress if she remembered to
ask the cook to hold back the chillies and she said she did.
She
went back into the kitchen and came out and told me that the cook
cannot remove the chillies from the dish because basil leaves and
chillies came together with the paste that the chicken is cooked
in, i.e., the dish was cooked from a mixture that came out from
a jar!! I can accept that some dishes that are served in restaurants
do come out from jar, e.g, curry paste etc - but I just could not
believe, that the basil leaves came out from the jar as well!! I
expected it to be fresh. I mean your curry paste probably came out
from a jar but you do not expect the beef or the potatoes/vegetable
in the dish to come out from a jar as well do you?? [Annie, some
places make their own pastes - perhaps this is the case with Bah
Nah? You can make pastes from fresh - just a thought - GC]
That aside, we tried to enjoy ourselves anyway.
Next
time I fancy Thai - Sainsbury's or Tesco's frozen food section may
be the better option. There is also the DIY option.
Annie
Rob and Liz Cavelli Driving home always takes us past the Ambar, and on this occassion we decided to try it. The food was allright, but nothing special. We prefer the Almas Indian Brasserie in Dore Village. By far the best indian restaurant in Sheffield- gorgeous food.
Steve Half the reviews here aren't even about this restaraunt.
This is an INDIAN restaraunt, and a very good one. Good service, good food and resonably priced. What more do you need?
David I've tried many dishes at the bahn nah and can't fault any. There is definitely much more to appreciate than the banana fritters & ice cream there! I have to say that the dishes stir fried with basil and chilli sauce are one of my favourite. The chef makes a home made paste from fresh holy basil & chillies. They get deliveries from thailand of fresh herbs & ingredients. Other thai restaurants i have visited taste very bland & much like chinese food which i cant say i like. I prefer the sharpness of thai!
Lucy i've never been to another thai restaurant in england with such delicious generous portions. having been to thailand many times, i can say the food certainly is authentic, sometimes better! i think people are a little too influenced by glitzy decor and beautiful surroundings!
Moorfoot Mike We went a few eeks back, so August 2005, and we all thought it was fine. The food was good, plenty of it and priced as expected. Waitress gorgeous -am I allowed to say that?
nad i went in with my partner on our 14th wedding anniversary, the service was poor to say the least, the food was absolutely foul and was so so over priced.
Anony George/Anna...am I missing something because the last time I went in Anbar (last week) it was an Indian - not Thai ?! Very nice food & staff.
Anna I think the food is great. So the tables are a little close together, but if you drink enough you just get chatting to your neighbours! The food is genuinely home cooked, i've been going there since the head waitress was running about at the age of 4 and the standard has not slipped. Not too expensive, very spicy and leaves you stuffed, the best Thai cuisine in Sheffield.
Rebecca This review is rubish! The food and service is amazing!
jenna I think it is really gud!
George Very average Thai/UK food with little fresh genuine Thai content, having worked in Thailand for 4 years I must say I was a little bit disapointed with the food, even with a recomendation from a old friend, Sheffield now has much better Thai restaurants to get the genuine thing, which I have found out first hand, the thai fishcakes were the best item I tasted on the menu, but I will not be back for sometime having found much better for now.

Katt Ok, so it has been a while since I dined here as I have moved out of the area but I can't believe the standard has fallen so much! I had some amazing meals at Bah Nah and am shocked that Greedy Cow skipped the starters. The fishcakes are amazing, a perfect balance of fish, lemongrass and spices. The massaman was delicious, creamy and peanutty. And the specials board always offered something new to try. Staff were friendly and attentive and I think you got excellent value for money especially if you went in a group and had a set meal (get to try more as well).

Anna I used to go to this place fairly regularly and the guy who seems to be in charge is lovely. However on the last few occasions the food has been bland and oily, and I will not be returning.
Stuart Hi
I agree with all the comments about the Bahn nah and to be honest most of the other thai restaurants around the uk I have tried. It is very difficult to find authentic thai food here which I love. Many of the problems are because of lack of ingredients available here. The comment about basil leaves out of a jar I can understand. The basil leaves they need to use in this dish are called holy basil. This cannot be found here unless you go to a specialist store. The nearest store from Sheffield you can get this is Manchester. Fresh holy basil goes bad after only a couple of days and is very difficult to grow here too. This is why you need to use from a jar.
Dave Jobling I recently ate some food from this establishment and i thought it was lacking in some areas, the chicken was rather rubbery and the sauce was rather bland to say the least, although I would add that certain parts of the meal were delightful particularly the can of pop.
