I telephoned
the Bull one day. "I'll be in your area of the pastures today.
Would you like to take me out to lunch?"
"I
suppose so," he snorted.
He
chose The West End, a pub near his workshed, and we trotted over.
The
West End looks from the outside like a regular pub, but inside it's
actually rather groovy. Lots of pine, and windows let the sunshine
stream in.
The
menu offers your basic pub food, but it's laid out in a rather fun,
ironic, kitsch sort ot way. Combine that with its proximity to the
University, and there's no prizes for guessing who the pub is aiming
at. But the clientele on the day we visited was mixed.
The
Bull's lasagne was home made, and came as a slice from a large one,
rather than one of those measly individual portions in a ceramic
piedish that always arrive with cheese the temperature of lava bubbling
on top.
He
said it was good, but a little salty.
My
tuna jacket potato was fine. The side salad was nice, too. All well
and good.
The
pub almost feels like a cafe, and the pool tables add to the feeling
that you could come for lunch and stay all day.
A great
place to watch a Sunday afternoon slip away...
fran not a regular here but it was a nice atmosphere slighty too dark for me but all in all its an alright place to stop and have some drinks. 06/05/05
Ousetunes Ah, The West End. This used to be my local way back in 1987 when it got so busy they had to open the bar upstairs (long since gone). I used to have to buy two pints at a time because it was 5 deep at the bar, honest!
I've always had a soft spot for the West End and admit I don't visit as much as I should these days. True, it's all a bit arty now, dark colours and candles on the walls. It had a pool table upstairs when I last visited which I feel is a little out of context with the type of pub it is trying to be.
Maybe Will is right: It should revert to being a traditional boozer but I'm afraid its market is the students whose own bar is a spit across the road.
We used to occasionally sit in the beer garden round the back, supping bottles of Skol 1080 while the video juke-box played the Bangles' Walk Like An Egyptian non stop.
And walk like an Egyptian I did after all that Skol 1080!!
Aaron The West End is a hidden gem. Its not an 'Old fashioned pub' more 'Bohemian Student'. The drink is cheap, the staff are very friendly, and the food is decent pub grub. Oh and there are copies of the daily newspapers available. What more could you ask for than a paper and a pint!
Will I think greedy cows been to the wrong pub, cos this certainly is not a good boozer. Reasons being, it's not a pub it's more like a place for the Womens Institute to hold their coffee mornings more like a community centre than a pub. One to avoid if your a typical old fashioned pub drinker. There are too many of these poncy pubs around lets sort it out and start a campaign to turn pubs back into pubs.
