The
Bull and I were feeling somewhat cosmopolitan one Saturday afternoon,
and so we trotted down the Ecclesall Road in search of somewhere
a bit classier than our usual grotty haunts. He even polished his
horns for the occasion.
Nonnas
looks very appealing from the outside. Its generally packed
out at the weekend. This is partly because their food is very good,
and partly because too many places in Britain seem to think that
we should all eat lunch between 12 and 2. Personally, I think this
is ridiculous. Im barely conscious at midday at the weekend,
and I know I'm not alone. You can often see the famished, hungover
dregs of Friday night wandering the streets of South Yorkshire at
4 o'clock on Saturday, desperately seeking rehydration and comfort
food. Its one of the few areas where fast food uberchains
cater better to their clientele than smaller joints.
But
I digress.
The
first issue at Nonnas was getting a table. Now, I have no
problem in queuing for a table. But the management seemed insistent
on bringing the less efficient habits of our European friends over
as well as the tapas in the name of authenticity.
If
theres one thing we Brits know how to do, its queue.
But at Nonnas there was a confused, polite free-for-all shuffle,
as the Nether Edge types tried to angle for tables while avoiding
eye contact with people who had arrived before them. Some sort of
plan would have helped.
Needless
to say, the Bull and I were seated in a couple of minutes. We then
ordered our tapas at the bar. It was good. The salads tasted fresh
and zingy. The watermelon and dolcelatte one was particularly good.
The Bull loved the polpette (meatballs), and the borlotti beans
were delicious. We also had some bread and olives.
The
only gripe I had was that the croutons in one of the salads were
soggy. This could have been avoided so easily by mixing them in
before serving, rather than mixing them into the main salad bowl.
The
Bull's head was hurting, so he gave it a fierce jolt of caffeine.
Mine wasn't, so I had a very pleasant glass of white wine.
We
peeped round the corner at the restaurant, and decided to come back
and try it, preferably when someone else was picking up the tab.
We
enjoyed the food, but did feel that the final bill was a little
steep. Or maybe "reassuringly expensive" is a better term.
Angela Bowler Lovely food here but sometimes the portions seem a bit small. The lack of bread with the meal also seems a little un- Italian.
dave w very nice and 30% off if you takeaway
