What's
the grub like, then?
My husband & I took his parents to The Millstone, after they
had previously been & enjoyed it. They, however, did not enjoy
it this time. Neither did we.
We
were sat in a dingy corner, rather close to the carvery station,
which was unfortunate in itself, as I was to have full view of it
throughout my meal.
We
placed our order, three carveries & one from the menu.. Being
a vegetarian, I browsed through the menu. There were a couple of
choices, from the normal 'Vegetable bake-esque' to what sounded
rather interesting, a 'Broccoli Rosti'. I ordered this & after
some initial confusion, was told I could help myself to vegetables
from the selection on the carvery.
We
only waited about 6 minutes for my main course to be served, something
which struck me as odd at the time, seeing as it was proudly proclaimed
to be 'cooked to order'. The meal came & I was greeted by a
dish of something indistinguishable, smothered in elastic, melted
cheese.
We made our way over to the carvery, where my dining partners choose
their meat. A choice of turkey, beef & what I presume to be
pork, but it was impossible to tell for certain. The turkey was
dry & stringy. The beef had been so over cooked that it crumbled
when a knife came so much as near it & had to be put on the
plates with a spoon. Nobody was brave enough to try the 'pork'.
The
vegetable selection was disappointing. Frozen peas, soggy carrots
& something pertaining to be parsnips (perhaps they were once,
in a past life). The parsnips had been cooked at least two hours
too long. They had not been peeled, simply chopped into huge hulking
pieces & dried out in an oven. They were inedible and truly
looked as though begging to be put out of their misery. The potatoes
were from a catering pack of frozen, ready roasted-just reheat potatoes.
The Yorkshire puddings were the same.
We
returned to our table to try to eat our meal. I gave mine closer
examination. My preconception of a rosti was a crispy, potato based
dish, It was clearly exceedingly hot, as when I delved in with my
fork, I was greeted by a huge eruption of steam. On closer inspection
& after studying the menu again to see if I had been served
the wrong dish, I came to the conclusion that it was supposedly
a 'Broccoli Rosti'. That is, if a 'Broccoli Rosti' is frozen, packet
veg, covered with cheap plastic cheese & micro waved to within
an inch of its life.
Whilst
trying to eat our meal, I was repeatedly put off by the sight of
the restaurant manager, or one of the teenage 'chefs' using one
tea towel to wipe crumbs of meat off the carving boards, swat flies
that were hovering over the uncovered food or various other tasks
for which it was not sanitary to use.
Throughout
the meal we were dive bombed by many flies, so many in fact that
we thought they must have an infestation, however, when we left,
my husband noticed the kitchen windows flung wide open, all lights
blazing & no blinds or curtains. This could well have been what
invited so many of them into the dining room.
I would
recommend you eat at The Millstone, only if you have absolutely
no other option, & then, only if you were within minutes of
death & wanted to be finished off quickly!
What
did you drink?
Medium wine. I ordered dry.
What's
the crowd like?
couples mainly
And
the vibe?
not entirely relaxing, a bit forced.
Value
for money?
No. £4.95 for Carvery £6.50 for menu option.

john i Wow 2 bad reviews. eaten here for over a decade, its always packed you have to book a table days in advance now. that tells you quality and reputation of the place. 2/12/05. new owners hasnt decreased business a slight increase by the looks of it.
Stephen Brown Carvery £4.95 NOT good value according to Karen...well at my local it's £6.95 and is nowhere near as plentiful or as well cooked...try living in the real world !!!
julianne morisso absolute ruubish. i think a bit of overeacting is going on here. obviously couldn't think of anything better to do with their time so they wrote a crap review.
Dave B. I've been a regular at The Millstone for over 2 years and would say that with very few exceptions the food is first class. The atmosphere has picked up too since the change in management earlier this year. Keep up the good work.
sharon went their last week, truly horrible meal of fish sludge canelloni baked for 9 hours and served to hot to handle, commis chef sat in the bar smoking a fag with the uniform screwed up on another chair.
Steve Under new management since May 2005. We used the upstairs function room, staff extremely helpful, food excellent and lots of it. Highly recommended.
Don Brasco Very harsh review in my opinion, I have eaten here a few times and found the meal to be of suitable standard.
Parus I regularly frequent the above to sample the carvery and for the price I have always found it excellent value for money. Yes I have had a problem with veg on the carvery it being a little repetitive wek in week out but I've never seen parsnips, or anything like them. On the whole it's a decent bit o' grub for the price.
