What's
your name?
Mat
Where
is it?
81 Grange Road, Cundy Cross, Barnsley
What's
the number? 01226
242 244
What's
the grub like, then?
The theme here is traditional Yorkshire fare, and lots of it. A
good choice for a Sunday lunch, the main courses are almost too
much for one person to manage and consist of the old favourites.
These include meat (and copious amounts of it), traditionally prepared
vegetables and the obligatory Yorkshire puddings.
Vegetarian
options are available and I am told that they are both palatable
and pleasant by my vegetarian other half.
What
did you drink?
A pint of Guiness from the bar. Which was average rather than noteworthy.
What's
the crowd like?
This place is very popular and attracts steady stream of families
from the surrounding area.
And
the vibe?
The Mill of the Black Monks is a converted building that was (of
course) a mill in the far off misty days of yore.
The
new refurbishment has been done with a great eye for detail and
the modern features never seem at odds with the original bare beams
and imposing architecture.
As
a result the atmosphere of the place is a far more unique and welcoming
than the average chainpub.
Anything
else you'd like to say?
They say that the toilets in this place are haunted, but so far
I've failed to encounter any of the supernatural inhabitants of
the gents.
Value
for money?
The great big platter of a meal is around £8 per person with
a choice of starter and sweet, or around £6 for a choice of
either.

Mike we invited friends from Essex for a meal here.Food was great and the atmosphere pleasant.Sorry, no ghost turned up, not even a cold shudder.A waitress was was upset at spilling sauce on a customer but she was very friendly and helpful.
BD I THOUGHT THE FOOD WAS SECOND TO NONE
CARL FORGET THE GHOST ASPECT THE FOOD IS THE ATTRACTION HERE PLUS THE ENVIRONMENT
Vicki Im 16 and believe in ghosts etc. Not knowing it was haunted went for a meal with my family. Half way through the meal I went very cold, no one else experienced this. Then something nipped my arm which reduced me to tears it hurt so much!!!! So I believe it is definately haunted and a lovely pub!!
jo m and me parnter went acouble of months ago for the second time. The food is lovely, and the meal was cheap as we ad food off the specials board only £20 for both of us with adrink. Only problem was the service was quiet slow as the place gets rather busy on the evening
Suzie solly We rang the pub 9 years ago and it is deffinatly haunted. Monks walked through the granny flat inthe main house, glasses flying a strange man sat on the bench at the back door and a mysterious drinker in the banquet room down stairs near the toilets. has anybody else experienced anything.
K The mill of the black monks is a nice place to eat. Highly recommend it
Jo nice food but overrun
with inconsiderate cigarette
smokers, will not be returning
M Dyson Would like to say that The Mill of the Black Monks catered for our party of 14 at very short notice and the food, service & value for money were excellent.
