Reviving flagging spirits: Marks and Sparks
Marks and Spencers
Tempting the Bull clothes shopping...
Cafe Revive is a welcome addition to the Marks and Spencer's shopping experience. (Well, it helped get the Bull into the changing rooms, anyway...)
FACTS

Marks and Spencer
Fargate
Sheffield S1

Around £5 for a sandwich, drink and packet of crisps

A few veggie options - though the choice overall isn't that wide.

I was trotting around Sheffield doing some shopping with the Bull. He needed some new work clothes, so I tempted him into Marks with the promise of lunch at their Cafe Revive.

He chose the club sandwich, and pronounced it good.

I had a tuna mayonnaise sandwich, which was ok. It was a little soggy, but it tasted nice. I also had some hand-cooked crisps, which were yummy.

The atmosphere in the cafe is light and airy. The Bull and I like it a lot. It's filled, as one might expect, with motherly types and couples seeking somewhere warm and clean to grab a bite to eat. There's no moozak, which is lovely - just the sound of urns steaming and teapots clanking.

"Nothing revives the shopping spirit quite like a cup of tea and a nice sit down," an aunt of mine once told me.

"How right she was," I thought to myself, as I bundled the Bull, protesting, into the men's changing rooms with three pairs of trousers and a couple of shirts.

I've used a couple of the M&S Revive cafes and they, along with Thorntons, and a plethora of similar venues, all suffer from the same problem. It's a bottleneck at the main product. The slowest part of getting through to a refreshing, relaxing, drink is the irritating, stupid queue that causes us all to stand around like lemons. From the coffee machines to the till there's no one in sight. From the coffee machine, back to the trays (and beyond) it reminds me of when we queued to see E.T., right around the block. Say what you may about the globalisation of brands such as Starbucks, but on the whole they do manage to give you your product in reasonable time.

I have worked in Sheffield for 2 years and M&S cafe was always my favourite place to have my lunch. People who think service is slow, I dont agree with them at all. The service has never been slow but yes there were sometimes long queues. Ofcourse people like the standard of cafe revive thats why they like to visit them and it ends up with long queues. I always got first class service from the staff there. Very friend environment!!

I love the cafe mocha at cafe revive and the fact that its organic yummy and all that cream. Only problem dont you think those cups are too big, what were they thinking, hopefully they will change them soon.

Not to be recommended, service appallingly slow, food tasteless especially the chicken wraps, and very overpriced for what we ate. Not a happy bunny !

laura
Caroline - you're on my wavelength. The new cups are a farce. some of my customers are old people who find it hard to hold them. As a member of M&S staff i say the cups are far too big.this isn't america. H.O dont agree and on the occasion my colleague phoned them - don't care much either. They're bringing in the cash and at the end of the day nothing can beat that.

jake
i agree the service is really slow marks and spencer dont seem to be able to deal with the fast pace of a coffee shop style environment, when buying food and clothes you want someone to pack your items with care, and take a few minutes, when you want a coffee or a sandwich you want really quick service, starbucks could show them a thing or two

Jo
The staff are always friendly and the coffee/tea is always good... and it's worth the wait.

Sarah
Im a student and I work in Cafe Revive.it is a fun job - the only downfalls are some of the lazy staff who also work there are some of the customers who seem to think it is acceptable to talk to you like you are dirt on their shoe.sort it out.

Craig
I have only been in cafe revive once and i would say that it is expensive, but the food quality is much better than most other places. Having said that I much prefer Cafe Marks, much much cheeper. One of the perks of working for M&S ;)

Caroline
I too work in a Cafe Revive & I agree with everything Laura says. I always ask customers how long it yakes them to make a cappuccino at home,at this point you find that hardly any of them do & they have no idea what is involved. Does everyone else agree that the new cups are a disaster?

Laura
I work in a cafe revive and I'd just like to say to those who feel the service is slow that we, the staff can only go as fast as the machines allow us.We do endeavour to give a good service and apologise to everyone who has had to wait.(In my store at least)You can't begin to imagine the pressure we're under, you may think we're just making a couple of coffees and clearing a table here and there but theres a lot more to it than that.Imagine looking up from the till and seeing a sea of miserable faces drumming their fingers on the trays and sighing very loudly. Not very encouraging to say the least. We do try hard but it's a bit difficult when customers have no patience. Also, I'll agree, yes the prices are O.T.T but we don't have any control over them unfortunatly. We are not a greasy spoon cafe, M&S is a big organisation therefore we can't knock 50p off your latte because you think it's too dear. I'd also like to thank all the lovely people you get in cafe revive aswell and thanks for all the positive comments.

Amy
I went to the one on fargate to kill time before doing a school play. seeing the queue and prices, I went straight downstairs to the food shopping bit, n bought an identical sandwich to the one I would of had in the cafe but it was alot cheaper 18/04/05

Alan partridge
Hi, im alan partridge. You may know me from my weekly slot on BBC Norwich or my local military based quiz show- "Skirmish". As a well known Norwich celebrity, i think Marks and Spencers is distinctly average- i would give it 6 on 10.

sir eggnog
excellent, in comparison to Tesco it was 5 star, i would recommend it to anyone. Service top class, food was excellent

Norman Andrews
i thought it was fantastic and would go again. the meadowhall is great, fast, and efficient. go and see 4 ur self

Mr Johnstone
Well what can I say your M & S, cafe revive is a real treat, how cares if the prices are a little bit more expensive than say a grotty cheapo place, the staff made me feel right at home! Your M & S cafe revive made me fell like it was my M & S, well done keep up the good work

Beager
It sucked

rosie,charlotte,adele and leanne
we thought that this cafe was great but could do to be a bit less expensive. the food was lovely, but then again it should be for the price we paid.it would be a nice treat once a month when shopping.

Emma Gidman
well i have been in to Stoke-on-Trents cafe revive and the service was slow due to it being the afternoon but the staff were friendly calm and down to earth they did as much as possible to help you and the food is delicious i had a bacon and tomato sandwich and normally i would not eat this but as it looked gorgeous i tucked in and throughly enjoyed it and as for drinks they are smooth warm perfect for a cold day.

Steve Lycroft
The service is not slow compared to other in store Cafes. The staff seemed miserable and unfriendly though not something you would expect from a company like Marks and Spencer. If you want to know a good place to have a bite to eat try Sunwin the staff are more down to earth and friendly.

Rosie
I agree that the service at Fargate and Meadowhall is far, far too slow. The problem seems to be with drinks. Yes they are nice as they are individually made and always hot because they are the last thing to be served. However, I suggest that the system be changed so that customers order drinks before moving down the queue to choose food and snacks. the drinks could then meet you at the other end and be paid for all together. the whole process could be speeded up by 1 to 2 minutes per person. In a queue of 20 people or more (typical of Meadowhall) this would be a huge benefit.

Vicki Jackson writes:
I haven't eaten at Cafe Revive but have called in twice for a coffee. Although the coffee was nice I have never experienced such slow, and I mean slow, service. The only reason I went a second time was to see if the first time was just a bad day... it wasn't and it has certainly put me off going again.

Kirsty writes:
it is the same at Meadowhall, its disgusting. The reason for Meadowhalls problem is that they dont have enough staff and expect people rom other parts of the store to help out and are not used to where things are so are slower. Lovely coffee but crap service if i say so.
